Fox is reporting that the gunman (who also wounded 11 others) is in custody.

I hope everyone pulls through OK.

Was bound to happen sometime with all the gun imagery common nowadays in US politics. It takes only one nutjob to take "retreat and reload" literally and something like this happens. Hope she makes it.

Edit: Holy Shit, Sarah Palin actually put out a map with gunsights on 20 Democrats, Giffords was one of them. Wow.

Gabrielle Giffords was one of the people listed in Sarah Palin's "Hit List."

With all the extremely bitter partisanship among our populace and "taking back our nation" rhetoric, on top of the economic woes and recession, I almost think it was a matter of time before a maniac came out and did something like this.

Tragic news today, I hope the best for all of the victims.

Cheers,
Anthony/Airport

Shame on you for trying to put the blame on the more than 50% of the population who want responsible government. The only reason she was on that list was that she was a democrat in a conservative district - i.e. a potential pickup for the GOP.

Giffords is pro-obamacare, but is generally a moderate democrat, who recently proposed in congress to cut Congressional pay - an excellent idea.

Back to the news - It seems that officials have stated that she was shot in the head, and unofficial rumors are that she is dead.

My thoughts and prayers to her family.

This is EXACTLY why you should be a moderate, and shun all liberal and conservative viewpoints and beliefs. Hyperpartisans are but a stone's throw away from being violent maniacs.

Unconfirmed reports say that unfortunately there were up to five fatalities, including the congresswoman. If true, my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the victims themselves.

Hopefully we can gain a positive from this and start the process of de-polarizing our nation, taking a few steps back, and rejecting hyperpartisan rhetoric.

Blaming conservatives already? Kinda like Bloomberg and the Times Square bomber, and we all know how that turned out. Gifford was pro-border security. It could have been a cartel hit for all we know.

Condolences to the families. The punk that did this should be fried.

I don't have a problem with people having their idea on how to best run the government.

I don't have a problem with conservative ideologies. In fact, there are many I happen to agree with to some extent.

I do have a problem with a politcian and her commitee putting target stamps on politicians to gain votes.

I do have a problem with sleazy talk show hosts shoving this "take back America" rhetoric that's becoming a race to become ever more provocative to boost viewership, which in the end only fuels the flames for crap like this to happen.

And most of all, I have a major problem with the extremist tendencies I'm seeing in more and more Republicans. That's my personal observation, and it has nothing to do with what Republicans ideologically follow. It's an attitude problem, not a belief problem. Forgive me for seeing it more in Republicans than Democrats, but the world isn't an equal place, and it's my personal observation from the last 3 years. And I'm not even a Democrat.

Cheers,
Anthony/Airport

It's obviously not blaming conservatism itself, but rather style of rhetoric that partisan politics to which many in the US have sunk.

Would not surprise me if it were a cartel hit. Seems like much of US doesn't seem to care about the mess going on down there.....until it spills over.

What's with this silly knee jerk reaction? Seriously, that's up there with "They hate our freedoms."

This very well could have been a cold, calculated by a number of groups with different motives.

Her husband also has a twin brother, Scott J, Kelly, who's also an astronaut and they're the only twins/siblings to have gone in space together apparently.

Mark Kelly is also scheduled to be the commander of the last space shuttle flight.

Thoughts go out to all the people and families of the injured and dead.

I hope this is an isolated action and there will be no repeats/attempts with other politicians.

 Wow!

"Take Back America" is hardly a new slogan. It was last used in the 2008 campaign - by Democrats.

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/how-take-back-america-nazis

That last one is "How To Take Back America ... From the Nazis"

So don't go all holier than thou, and trying to pull this thread to your politcal sniping. This woman is dead, and by all accounts was a serious, non-ideological public servant in the proudest traditions of Congress (sadly rare these days).

There are extremists on both sides. I personally don't like either Republicans or Democrats (full disclosure I am a conservative leaning independent). However I think it is disingenuous to say that one side has more fanatics than the other. It just so happens a Democrat is in the White House, so Republicans are screaming the loudest right now, but I do remember not to long a go many extreme leftists suggesting that the Bush administration executed the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Quoting Airport (Reply 2):

Gabrielle Giffords was one of the people listed in Sarah Palin's "Hit List."

I put Sarah Palin in the same boat as Beck, Matthews, Olberman, Maher, and Carlson. They just say outrageous things to get ratings. I do not even know how many of the things they say they actually believe. I don't really care for Sarah Palin but I don't think that her poster is in anyway suggesting that someone kill any of the representatives on the list. To me it is clearly a poster that has target districts which the Republicans want to take back. As ridiculous as some of the things Palin says are, I think it is ridiculous to suggest she put out this poster to try and encourage violence against the specified representatives.

Having said that this is a tragic event indeed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their families. I hope they catch the responsible party (parties) and they are severely punished.

She was either shot by:

1. Some random nut, or someone with a personal vendetta
2. A cartel?
3. A conservative who hated that she voted for healthcare reform
4. A liberal who hated that Giffords has reached across the aisle and was a moderate like all people should be

3 and 4 prove why you should be a moderate and NEVER a liberal or a conservative.
