If you're going to be "immoral" I don't think you need a special day to do it and, anyway, like many things these days it seems to have gone well beyond a bit of innocent fun and be more about merchandising than anything else.

Can Muslims have any kind of romantic love according to this guy?
Valentine's day is my birthday and it is kind of a pain in the butt. I rarely ever go out for dinner on my birthday because all the resturants are crowded. People always give those candy hearts too (the ones with sayings on them) and I hate those things......

I hate Valentines Day, I think it is a bunch of commercialized BS. If you are the type of person that buys your girl flowers anytime of the year just for the hell of it, and take her out to dinner, and treat her like a lady, why do I need a day that says if I don't do it on that day, I am a bad guy?

Every special day is now being recooped by commercialism. Christmas, Mother's/Father's Day, Easter, Halloween... and thus they lose their true meaning and charm, which I find a real shame.
Valentine's Day has lost its innocent charm. Maybe this is why the Muslims want to have it banned.
I remember during the late 1950's and 1960's in France, Saint Valentine's Day was symbolized by two charming lovers by illustrator Peynet. The lovers pretty drawings were seen everywhere on Valentine's Day.

Exactly. Valentine's Day is a tax on the thoughtful man for being thoughtful.

Valentines Day sucks for single guys like me.
I am in BKK right now and V day has just finished. I went out for a steak with Mr Superfly and everywhere that sold steaks seemed to be only doing over priced valentines dinners designed for couples. So in the end we went for a steak at at American run joint and it was excellent. No Valentines BS there either which was good, just friendly atmosphere,

V-day is useless. Used to be cute when we were kids with card exchange, fun in high school when you could sic sentiment on the girlfriend who happened to fall on February, and a bit more fun in college when you could use it as an excuse to push the kink envelope. Now it has been totally ruined. Cards and candy for everyone in the office?? What the hell? It's supposed to be a holiday for sweethearts. Now Wal*Mart is telling people they have a V-day sale on waffle irons? WTF??

I'm not sure that's as strange as it seems to strike you - for god's sake, in this country we evidently remember our war dead by reducing washing machine prices.
But it is always a bad idea to present your woman with a gift of a kitchen appliance, that's for sure. I think they prefer jewelry.
And hey, Aaron, why the "reverence" for that evil retailer by putting the star in there? That company doesn't deserve that kind of attention. (I am proud to say I have never set foot in a WalMart or even any of their parking lots.)

Oh right there with you. But it just gets worse and worse every year - what a joke. ABC reported people are spending up to $115 on Valentine's day including gifts/cards for co-workers, friends, and what not.

Well I don't worry about that part - my wife thinks V-day is a corporate scam.

My dad used to say that until he got my mom a Kitchen Aid mixer for Christmas. She said it was the best and most useful gift she ever got. My dad once got my mom a lawnmower for mother's day, that didn't go over well, but I thought it was funny.

I don't think it's too bad - although, I don't think having 1 day that is dedicated to somebody is that great. If you love them, surely every day should be a day you do something nice for them or buy them something you know they'll like. Me and my girlfriend do it all the time, although this was our first V day together, and the first V day either one of us has been able to share it with somebody else.
You don't even have to spend a lot for it to be romantic. I think I spent £30 on flowers (Although, being V day, I reckon I got a pretty good deal considering a certain place in my local town wanted £46 for FOUR ROSES (I shit you not, seriously.)), and £1 on a card. I got her an iPod Touch that she's been after for a long time as well, and I had it engraved for her too but I was going to buy her that anyway.
Remember - It's not the amount you spend, it's the amount you love somebody. I'd be happy with nothing on V day and just to spend time with her, but that's just me.
