Northwestern University sex toy show 'disturbing'
A US university president has said he is "disturbed" that a psychology professor allowed a demonstration of a motorised sex toy in a lecture hall.

Morton Schapiro of Northwestern University called the decision to allow a naked woman to demonstrate use of the device last month "poor judgement".

Indeed, especially if there was not a comparison as to how much better/worse a human does the job!!

Now that's the part you wanted to volunteer for!!!

I think the big issue is that a naked woman actually demonstrated it in the classroom - while sex education is very important and the vast majority of universities do support sex education on their campuses I have to agree that this probably went a little too far. When I was in school our LGBT group had a meeting where they had a professional seller come and discuss different sex toys but in no way was anything demonstrated on anyone.

Northwestern has traditionally been an excellent university with bright students.

So why in the hell would they need some teacher to show them how to get off?

I had something similar done at my school (minus the naked woman, unfortunately   ) But they basically made a sex ed class on how to use condoms. They put several rubber phallusae on a table and had girls volunteer practicing putting on the condoms and whoever put them on the quickest would win a pack of condoms. So we found out right away who were the whores in our school.

While it didn't bother me one bit, I did feel my intelligence somewhat insulted. And of course the more prudish types were all squeamish and a few even walked out. Yet those are the types that always get "accidental" pregnancies.

Most likely a professor that they could not fire ... so they made up a class to stick them in . Something easy to teach ...like a human instinct ... Like the "professor" here at UA who teaches ..."eroticism in the medieval age".. the guy teaches a class about porn in the 5th century?

At the university where I teach, the instructor of the Human Sexuality class took students to a nearby "women-positive" adult store so that students could learn about products designed to promote safe sex. The outing was optional and the instructor did not stay in the store after taking students there. That way students were not made uncomfortable by their instructor's presence. This is the way to do this sort of thing. Sex education is appropriate in a learning environment, but it has to be done right.

Academia is one of the last bastions of free thought and expression in this country, and even then, it is constantly under attack from radical left and right fringe groups.

The professor was teaching a course in human sexuality, and specifically was discussing bondage and fetish. Yes, this was a graphic demonstration, but it was also voluntary, students were warned of the graphic nature of what they were going to see and it was not done during class time.

Unfortunately, this event is going to be used by the anti-academic front in this country (the people who see Universities as liberal bastions of immoral conduct), rather than be seen for what it is: an in-depth look at a specific topic within a specific topic.

Besides, the people ranting and raving about this are the same types of people that spend their entire vacation in Bangkok at the "Sex shows."

Um, these are not high school kids - these are adults. The Northwestern President is the one who should be admonished - for being overly puritanical

That's the important thing. These are all adult students at a private university, it was an optional lecture in a course about human sexuality, and the students knew ahead of time of what was involved. I see no issue with it, besides the fact that its a pretty interesting story.

I guess the biggest shock to me is that something like this was allowed to happen, even in a private setting, in such a puritanical country.

I would amend these statements to say that the students in question should be adults. I understand why this story has become news. I teach at the university level and many of my students act as if they were children in adult bodies. Many of my students talk to their parents on the phone at least once a day. I have to be careful what I say in class for fear of offending students who do not hesitate to call Mommy at the slightest perceived offense. The parents immediately call the university president to complain, the president kicks it down to the dean, and then the dean has to have an obligatory talk with a tenured faculty member simply to appease the over-protective parents who mollycoddle their delicate little flower of an offspring. I hate to sound cynical, but this is the current state of affairs, like it or not. Professors with 30 years service end up cowering in fear that a 20 year-old child in an adult's body will go crying to Mommy. This is a fact of the modern institution of "higher learning."

Sad but true. While I did call my parents at least once every 2 weeks, I was shocked at the amount of kids that called their parents several times daily. Not only that, when I was moving into my room in freshman year I kid you not I was probably the only kid out of everyone in the hall who's mom didn't have to teach to make a bed, or scrub the toilet, etc etc. I swear I was the only guy that could fend for himself in the whole school, everyone else still lived under mommy's skirt. And these are our future world leaders

Maybe you got employed by the wrong university. I take a lot of political science and history classes, not to mention sociology classes where I go to school, and my professors regularly swear in class, not because they're trying to make a point or anything, but because that's who they are, and they recognize that we as students are also adults. I actually respect professors more when they get rid of the suit and tie and are willing to let down their hair a little bit.

Totally not worth it. Considering my school had a 8 guys to 1 (mediocre looking) girl ratio, I did not want to have that many weiner cousins, besides, I bet the grand canyon feels tighter than any of the skanks at my alma mater.

I went to a private Catholic university. I was a psych major and took Human Sexuality. We watched a video of both sexes masturbating. That was an interesting class to say the least.
