So it seems the Czech Republic are the first to get the bad news !! Any guesses on who might also be getting bad news about the new iPad 2 launch?

Those poor iPad 2 fans in Czech Republic. They’ve just been told the bad news that the tablet won’t be available on the 25 March, as promised by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple at its official launch.

It seems demand has been so high in the US that some countries are starting to lose out on the initial planned launch date.

Czech Republic will now have to wait until the 25 April, according to the Apple website in that region.

The earthquake in Japan didn't help the supply chain any either.

Indeed.

Analysts predict iPad 2 shortages after earthquake

Quote:
SEATTLE (AP) -- Market research group IHS iSuppli said Friday that last week's earthquake in Japan could cause shortages of Apple Inc.'s iPad 2 tablet computer.

The iSuppli analysts, who regularly do "teardown" analyses to determine what components are used inside consumer electronics, said they have identified at least five parts that come from Japan: storage and memory from Toshiba Corp. and Elpida Memory Inc., an electronic compass from AKM Semiconductor, touch-screen overlay glass that is likely from Asahi Glass Co. and a battery from Apple Japan Inc.

They've got alternative suppliers they can use, but apparently, the glass used in the screen is of a special type developed by Asahi, and no other company makes it.

Even without this earthquake, the iPad 2 is pretty hard to come by here in the US. From what I have heard secondhand, Apple seems to be replenishing the Apple Stores first, and the other retailers selling it have no timetable in which they'll be receiving any (I can vouch on that, as several days back, I went to two different Best Buy stores [as well as a Fry's, a Target, and a Walmart] looking for an iPad 2 and the clerks told me that they did not know when they would be getting any in, but they could put me on the waiting list.). I'm going to try to hit an Apple Store or two this week and see if they have any in stock, and if not, I'll put my name down on the waiting list. I'm half-tempted to buy two so I can do like so many others are doing, and reselling one of them on eBay at $200+ above retail. Even online merchants on Amazon are selling them at an inflated price. I could order one from Apple's online store, but they're showing a 4-5 week delivery date.

I hear there is also a problem with the screen (backlight bleeding).

Yes I read an article about that also. I guess time will tell how many bugs there are

I thought the iPads used Gorilla Glass by Corning.

"The iPad 2 and previous iPad both utilize Corning Gorilla Glass. This type of glass is an alkali-aluminosilicate, being primarily silica and aluminum with an alkali metal, along with other unspecified components mixed in to tweak its properties."

Now I'm confused, as I looked at the teardown report on iSuppli that was mentioned in the article, and they mention Gorilla Glass as well. But they mention Asahi Glass in another piece on their site:

Yeah, I was a bit too, reading some other sites. Best I can come up with from memory is that Corning and Asahi were partners some time ago on a similar type of glass product, but they went their separate ways, with the Corning product becoming the choice for iPhones, iPods (?) and iPads.

If I cannot come across one this week via an Apple Store (and the waiting list is not too terrible), I'm going to break down and order one and wait the 4-5 weeks for one. Or I may say to heck with it and get myself a Mac Mini.......

The Apple online store has been listing a 4-5 week delivery date for the last week or so.

When they launched it here, it was done at 5 pm on a Friday.

At this point, I'm going to just order mine online and wait the 4-5 weeks. With the nearest Apple store locations to me being over a 30 minute drive, I'm not making two trips to the Apple Store in order to try to get an iPad 2. You can "order" it one day and get to the mall when it opens and stand in line in the hopes that they got the type you wanted in and that they've got enough for everyone in line once the store opens at (The location I went by today said that the mall opens up at 6am and they open the Apple Store at 7am, and this morning, they sold out that day's stock by 7:30am.).

Cant decide if I should go 3-4 hours before 5pm and que or just stay up until 1am and order online and see how long it takes to ship.
