Hey guys, I need graphics card opinion:

I'm currently running SLI EVGA 9800 GTs and looking to upgrade to either one EVGA GTX 580 or SLI EVGA GTX 560s. I will be running dual monitors (1920 x 1080) so I was curious of what your opinions are. Gaming is typically the norm, but my father and I are starting our own tech/drafting business and 3D applications are forcing me to upgrade.

I will not go ATI, too much bad blood there.

The reason I'm sticking with EVGA is they have provided me outstanding customer service, so I want to continue to support them.

Good choice on EVGA.

A single 580 will do you well. I would stay away from SLI, as it is actually more of a pain in some cases for, what can be, a miniscule gain. Some programs, for example, break under SLI - I'd assume you're using the newest versions of CAD and the like, but I know older versions could not handle SLI. Additionally, if you want to render h.264 video (say, an architectural fly-around), some programs cannot use the GPU to speed up h.264 rendering when in SLI.

Another option is EVGA's new dual-card.... its a single card with two GPUs on it. I think they just released the 460 in that version a few days or a week ago, and I've heard some good things about it.

Just know that all the fermi-based cards run HOT. I have a 470 and it heats up my room very quickly once it kicks into high gear.

The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

Appreciate the input. I'll probably go with the GTX 580 and SLI sometime in the next +18 months.

Found this image on the net, and it was very helpful.

Also, have you heard any rumors about nVidia lowering the prices for their cards sometime in the next couple of weeks? And supposedly the GTX 590 was to be released yesterday.

590 will be out (announced... possibly not available for retail) within a week, last I heard. They had to correct some last-minute issues on some capacitors on the latest batch, or something of the sort.

Not sure on the price-side of things, but I'd expect the prices of the 5xx series to drop over the next month or two, based on historical market prices. They're not the "hot new cards" now, but now the high-end mainstream, so they'll lower the prices to attract more buyers. It could also very well depend on ATI's product releases. ATI usually undercuts nVidia, who then lowers their prices on comparable cards.

If you're looking to buy sometime in the next two months, wait a bit on the 590. There's often driver issues and growing pains on new cards making them a nightmare to work with, plus the price is extermely high for the first month or 6 weeks.

If you're looking to buy anywhere from now to the next month, get the 580. I think you'll find you won't need to SLI it.... but if you decide to, you'll do better if you get the exact same model, so watch the model numbers closely and if EVGA stops making one, snap your second one up fast.

Thanks ALT. I'll wait for a couple of weeks to determine if the price drops and maybe get lucky. The 590 will most likely be off my list as that card will most likely be in the $600+ range. So the 580 it is.
