From my experience in Paris last summer, there's an RER train that takes you to Gare du Nord and then you can take the underground to Montparnasse (or any main station you can think of)... Maybe some local people can help you out on that.
Nevertheless, I don't have good impressions on the Paris Metro system.... I was robbed of FRF300 at Gare du Nord

The shortest route is 8 stops, with only one connection (takes about 16 minutes)
Board at Charles de gaulle - Etoile
take ligne 1 (heading towards Chateau de Vincennes)

ARTSYMAN,
Are you sure about that?
Charles de Gaulle is quite a way outside Paris.
Take the RER train to Gare du Nord. The RER is a surburban network and is much faster than RATP which is the local, central service.
You can connect to several lines at Gare Du Nord, but leave plenty of time as it is a very very confusing station! As far as I can remember, Montparnasse is also on the RER network so it should just be a platform change rather than a long walk to a different part of the station!
I think the best idea is to ask at the station for a route map. They are very easy to understand.
Gare du Nord is notorious for pickpockets so keep your money out of view.

First off, to get to the airport its a completley different tarification, your Séction Urbaine will NOT work.
If you're under 18, and its a weekend, buy a Carte Jeunnese, its 40 francs for unlimited travel in all 5 zones, if not, buy a regular ticket, but it will be expensive. (there are other options, however tourists are unaware of these possibilites) such as the Mobilis, (which does NOT work on the Roissybus if you plan on taking that)
Secondly, ride the RER B on a train that is direct to Gare du Nord (the line between CDG and GDN that stops is famous for gang attacks, I've seen it happen) usually, after it stops at the Gare du Nord, it will contiune on to Chatelet, go there, or if possible go to Denfert Rochereau. (if you can stay on same train). Don't dillydaddle at Chatelet, go direct to the metro station (4), its not a place you want to stop and look like you're lost, and at certain times of the day, it can be very unwelcomming.
Then, get on the Métro Ligne 4 (its purple), ride that to Montparnasse, then a short walk, you're there. (its well explained, Montparnasse is easy to navigate.)
