Quote: Our latest data project was to analyze how food preferences vary by political ideology. The infographic below, designed by the talented folks at Column Five Media, breaks it down. Keep reading after the infographic for more background and analysis, including some comparisons to findings from 18 months ago when we first looked at this issue.
Other than confirming a few stereotypes, this information is absolutely useless. Also, the method of data collection isn't exactly scientific. But then again, this isn't critical policy-determining information, either.

An interesting result was that liberals in this poll like beer more than conservatives, which surprised me a bit. I know plenty of liberals who drink beer, but I thought the ratio would be pretty close to equal, maybe leaning toward conservatives preferring beer more.
I'd be willing to bet this however- when it comes to liquor, liberals probably prefer cocktails (martinis, etc.) while conservatives probably prefer simpler mixed drinks or straight liquor. (Disclaimer: this is based on personal experience, I could be totally wrong.)

Yes, but as we left coast conservatives learn fairly quick after moving here from a red state...over hopped micro-brews are liked more by liberals than Budweiser. Not that micro-brews are bad, but I heard the word "growler" for the first time when I moved here, beer means Bud or Michelob where I grew up, not Fremont Brewing Company's Summer Solstice described as "Tangerine flower in a glass, endless days distilled into nectar of barley and hops. One grain, one hop. Simplicity….yet, so much more."

That's a good point. I think the big American brand beers like Bud, Coors, Busch, etc. are more appreciated and consumed by conservatives (though I don't mind one now and again, and when I party I usually drink Bud or Coors), and though micro-brews can be obnoxious like the one you described, I think they have a pretty universal appeal among those who enjoy beer.

Quoting fr8mech (Reply 4): I agree, a pretty useless study.
I will agree that at least where I moved from exotic food was eating Chinese food. Here in Seattle it seems like there's a Thai or sushi place on every corner, I would have had to gas up the car to find one in Missouri.
And, there needs to be a separate column for seafood. Seafood meant anything from fried catfish with hush puppies to trout in Missouri I'd have to make catfish myself here.

Liberals are more likely to consume alcohol would be my guess. Not that libs are boozers, but libs usually view alcohol as a part of life to be consumed moderately. Hard-line conservatives view it as a dangerous vice. That's my best guess, anyway.

Don't get me started. I like lagers. Living in California, you'd be forgiven for thinking that lagers have gone out of fashion. Oh no, it's IPA's, stouts, pale ales, blah blah blah. I like LAGERS. Does that make me a bad person?

According to this study I'm a righty, I love burgers and french fries though I will use "french fries" or more often "fries" over "freedom fries" . I love grilled and BBQ food. I will more often go for commonplace pasta like mac and cheese over the harder to pronounce pasta but I am not a sceptic to try, I also love soft tacos. To drink I like Bud as an immediate option over the micros and I do drink my fare share of soda and I am no vegetarian. I do fit in with the thin pizza, fine dining and strawberry jelly.
Interesting study.

I think it's more of a religious thing than a conservative thing (yes, there is a difference). I'll add that I know a couple of staunch conservatives that completely abstain because they are recovering alocoholics.
Quoting doclightning (Reply 6): I like LAGERS. Does that make me a bad person?
Admitting the truth is the first step to recovery.
All kidding aside, I'll drink just about any beer that doesn't have a fruity taste. If I wanted fruit, I would have bought a damn apple.
Quoting canoecarrier (Reply 5): And, there needs to be a separate column for seafood.
Absolutely. You can't compare Ahi Tuna to fish sticks.

Only the religious ones.
There are a lot of bourbon / whiskey drinking hardline conservatives. All them gawd damn liberals out there will drive you to drinkin'.

I really don't like fruity cocktails. I used to love the fruity cocktails when I was a teenager.
Now I just want beer or hard liquor. Wine is the sweetest I'd go.
I guess I lean conservative when it comes to food.
The one thing the Hunch left out was ethnic food that is not fusion.
I love ethnic food but I don't care for this new fusion fad.
If I want Japanese food, I want it 100% Japanese and not mixed up with French.
If I want Thai food, I want it 100% Thai and not mixed up with Japanese or something else.
Same for all other ethnic foods.
As far as vegetables go, I like it raw.

Absolutely. I appreciate pretty much any beer, I just can't have anything fruity. I don't really like any fruit taste combined with alcohol except maybe a nice raspberry iced tea and vodka I sometimes have on hot spring/summer days. Otherwise, its beers, rum and cokes, gin and tonics, or vodka on the rocks for me.

No, but I've tasted enough of the flavored beers to choose something else, if available. But, I won't pass up a free beer.

Apparently, I'm more liberal than I thought according to the infographic. I've always considered myself a left leaning moderate, but apparently my love of a nice glass of pinot noir after work makes me more so.
That being said, I will agree with the majority that bacon cheeseburgers are delicious!

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Look at the location of many of the bigger microbreweries (you know what I mean) - California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania. Either liberal or swing state.

Well to be fair, mate, the first time I heard the word was in Kansas...far from a liberal state (quite the opposite in fact)
Quoting canoecarrier (Reply 5): I would have had to gas up the car to find one in Missouri.
Like anywhere else, it depends where you live. In the metro areas of KC and StL, it's really quite easy to find. In rural areas, not so much...but that's the case in a lot of places, whether they be left-leaning, right-leaning or in-between. You can just find more ethnic foods in larger cities than in rural areas.
Quoting doclightning (Reply 6): I like LAGERS. Does that make me a bad person?
I think lagers, like all kinds of beer, serve a purpose. I like a good lager from time to time, especially on warmer days or if I am doing something outdoors. I mean, face it, when you are having a BBQ and it's 95 degrees, do you want a heavy milk stout? I certainly don't...

That is where I am still very much a left-wing liberal. I love US microbrews.
The people who put this survey together is so void of knowledge of the different types of beer.
A conservative would mot likely drink Coors, Budweiser or Miller.

I'd have guessed the opposite. While I agree with you that liberals are more likely to consume alcohol frequently in moderation, my time as a bartender showed me that conservatives are the ones with a truly stupendous capacity for alcohol consumption, usually coupled with an equally amazing ability to show no outward signs of inebriation. However, one thing I noticed as a bartender re Liberals versus Conservatives was this: Liberals tended to make a show of ordering drinks and would order different libations depending on their mood and companions whereas Conservatives had a strong tendency to drink exactly the same thing all the time (usually gin or scotch), and preferred that their glass be refilled as soon as it was empty and with as little fanfare as possible, ideally with no acknowledgment at all.

That used to not be the case. Up until 10 years ago I couldn't tell you where an ethnic restaurant in KC was, ethnic then was Memphis style bbq in Westport.

I have nothing against US microbreweries, but until I moved to Seattle I'd only been to three. Now I live in an neighborhood where there's 5 microbreweries within a mile and a half. If you show up to a backyard grill here with a case of Bud Light you might as well plan on drinking it yourself. Everyone else will be drinking Red Hook IPA, Pyramid Hefeweisen, Alaska Amber... That said, I do drink more microbrew beers now then Budweiser products.

Yes, there's a difference but the religious conservatives will swing the overall conservative numbers. If we eliminated religious conservatives, I agree the numbers would look different.
