This thread is the place to discuss ALL F1, Formula 1 related matters and events that are happening during the 2011 season.

The upcoming race in Canada will be round 7. The season so far has been dominated by Red Bull Racing and Sebastian Vettel with only Lewis Hamilton, who won in China, managing to beat Vettel.

Bahrain will make a return in October, much to the dismay of teams and the drivers, with only the Bahrainis, FOM and the FIA being happy with the decision.

Could there be a race if all the teams decide to boycott it? I mean, if no-one turns up are the FIA going to ban them all? Is there a legal/contractual obligation for the teams to have to be there at all races?

Yes, but if no one turns up it's not like they'll all get thrown out. There's no body to take their places. When the teams work together, which they've only just started to do, they seem to be able to wield a bit of influence over the sports authorities.

Thanks for starting this thread bill142.

Regarding Bahrain I'll repeat what I said in the other thread before it was deleted for going 'off topic'..

It is a horrible decision to reinstate the Bahrain GP. It is a slap in the face to the people who protested for democracy and change..people died, and the F1 world seems to be going on as though nothing happened. Absolutely disgusting, money trumps humanity again. No surprises there at all.

Kudos to Webber for having the guts to speak out on the matter, if only other F1 drivers/teams could do the same.
And let me add..I was disgusted at Jackie Stewart's remark that it was OK to race in Bahrain because 'not many people had been killed'. What a tool.

And as others have written in F1 forums, how many people are likely to disappear (or, at least, find their lives becoming very difficult) when the race is on, so that they won't come into contact with the world's press that will descend for both the Grand Prix and because of the situation there?

By that stage of the season it'll probably be a meaningless race anyway given the way things are going in the championship. I can't imagine the driver's or constructor's #1 not being decided by then.

Well as we're on our way to Montreal and the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a little flashback to the very first race held in Montreal, and won by non other than Gilles. His very first GP win. Here's the photo I took that day on his way to that victory in his Ferrari as he approaches what is now turn 11. In those days, it was just past the end of what was the pit straight.

Photopilot, you have officially become my hero!!

Looking into the Bahrain WMSC decision I found these couple of gems....

Especially for EZEIZA
…… a member of the FIA(often maligned as Ferrari International Assistance)World Motor Sport Council is François CORNELIS, and his title...."President of the FIA Manufacturers' Commission or the Ferrari SpA Representative"

I kid you not, they have their own representative on the FIA WMSC

Another tidbit from the WMSC meeting of 03/06/2011….

2013 Regulations

The Technical Regulations for 2013 were approved:

- Power units will be four cylinders, 1.6 litre with high pressure gasoline injection up to 500 bar with a maximum of 12,000 rpm, with extensive energy management and energy recovery systems (now known as ERS), reflecting the decision taken by the WMSC in December 2010
- The aerodynamic regulations have been based on 2011 rules, with modifications in order to improve the aerodynamic efficiency: together with the power train rules, this will enable a 35% reduction in fuel consumption
- The height of the tip of the nose will be limited to ensure better compatibility in a T-bone style accident
- A limitation on transmissions (gear ratios, number of gearboxes) in order to decrease costs
- The overall weight of the car must be no less than 660kg

Damn it, they have turned the world's premier class of motor racing into 1990’s IndyCars!!

Cheers

Thanks for the photo. I wasn't even alive when Gilles Villeneuve won his first race, but my interest in the legend of Gilles Villeneuve was partly sparked by the fact that I'm a fan of his son Jacques. When everyone talks about him as "son of Gilles", I decided I needed to read up on his famous father. Gilles Villeneuve was certainly one of a kind. Had he lived I would've loved to see him fight with other 80s greats like Rosberg, Mansell, Piquet, Senna and Prost. I don't think his statistics do him any justice. I've watched a few Youtube videos of Gilles Villeneuve in action too. He was truly a star.

Having also been guilty as charged in the Monaco thread, I'd like to seek some clarification (because I'm easily confused!)

Is the intention that this thread is for all F1 discussion OTHER than the race-specific threads, because a new thread for the Canadian GP has just been started.

It would seem to make sense to keep race-specific discussion to the respective race threads, but use this thread for general discussion. Or have I got this completely wrong?

Why does F1 need to be Eco friendly? Maybe they should make the teams buy hybrid trucks and make their factories carbon neutral to offset the emissions caused by the race cars. Also they can ban races in countries that don't give two hoots aboutw their carbon emissons.

FOTA want the Bahrain GP moved to the last race, rather than October 30 as presently scheduled. Interestingly, Max Moseley claims the FIA are in breach of their own rules by moving the Indian GP.

Now Bernie says Bahrain GP can't go ahead.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13694628.stm

Quote:
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has said October's reinstated Bahrain Grand Prix cannot go ahead.

The race was due to open the season in March but was called off because of civil unrest. Last week the FIA restored it to the calendar.

"Hopefully we can return in the future, but of course it's not on," Ecclestone told BBC Sport's Dan Roan.

They should give them all cars with no electronic aids, turbos, and very little downforce. It made for awesome racing in the late 80's, and while I'm a fan, I'm a fan of the era before I was born (1992), as I watched them all on VHS. It's too much about fancy gadgets and who's got the best computer geeks making the cars faster now and not so much about pure performance.

Now that we have a general F1 thread will it be possible to have a rational discussion about whether F1 should return to Bahrain this season and if so should it be the final round or nto?
