What Happens When You Die

I was talking to a workmate the other day and the topic turned to death . The main unanswered question was , what happens to a persons email address when they die? Obviously people who know of the person passing will not email, but what about subscriptions etc that are sent . does an email address last forever and nobody else can ever use that address.

most big sites like hotmail have an inactivity limit after which time they deactivate it.

It depends on who the email address is hosted with. The likes of gmail/yahoo/hotmail will disable an email address if you dont log in every 90 or so days. However the email address is usually tied to your login account, so as soon as you log in, you can re-activate it, and noone else can re-register that address.

If you own your own domain and have an email address via that, the domain registration will eventually expire (typically they are renewed for 1 or 2 years, but you can also renew for up to 10 years at a time), at which point someone else could register that domain and take over the email address.

When I first signed up to the internet back in 1998 my email address was name@btinternet.com. However after a few years we switched ISP's, and I no longer had that email address. 3 months ago I switched back to BT, and when asked to choose an email address, I chose name@btinternet.com - sure enough it let me re-register it, and I now get emails that I signed up to 10 years ago!

My company is an ISP and mail host, and we have something like 800 Terabytes of mail archives. God knows how much of that belongs to people who are dead, moved away or otherwise will never access them again. But the rules say we have to keep 'em...

Jeez, I thought this woud be a different kind of thread.

It depends on the company, as everyone else has said. Now, If someone in my family died, I'd probably put a "vacation" responder on their e-mail... Telling anyone who sent them a messeage that they had died.

If you are paying an ISP for a service on a monthly basis and payments cease the ISP would deactivate the account after a while. Depending on the ISP's set up, senders of email may receive a message saying that the account could not be found on the server (or words to that effect. For example, 5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'#5.1.0 Address rejected)
If subscriptions lists are not monitored the server sending emails will receive error messages until the end of time.

A sentence that would mean something completely different without that well placed comma.

Even if the question is also dumb, who says the question wasn't made to trick people into believing that the user was serious, even if he/she wasn't?

My troll radar is pretty good. I really doubt that was a troll. Not to mention I know a girl right now that is THAT stupid, and she's not the only one I've met.

I think you can still keep your email addresses but the trouble is you can't access them, or maybe you can, in your own way.

I wonder if this is an ecumenical question?

Well I am a Muslim in the religion of Islam (that is the fastest growing religion in the world). In ISLAM, when a person dies, the angel of death comes to either gently lift the soul out of the body or rip the soul out of the body depending if the person was a good or evil person. The soul hovers above the body, and is buried in the grave with the body. The soul can hear close relatives and families grieving around the body, and when everyone leaves the site after the burial, two angels named "Munkir" and "Nakir" arrive to interrogate the soul with 3 important questions

1. What is your religion?
2. Who is your God?
3. Who is this man Muhammad?

And depending on your beliefs and your good and evil deeds will be weighed and your place in paradise or hell will be shown, and you will be brought back into your grave and you will be resurrected on the Day of Judgement or the last day as it is known, God will put your bones and flesh back together and you will rise naked and penniless on the last day of resurrection to be judged on your deeds and accounts and you will enter Paradise or Hell. Read in the Quran verses:

V8:36. And he puts forth for Us a parable, and forgets his own creation. He says: "Who will give life to these bones when they have rotted away and became dust?"

V79:36 Say: (O Muhammad ) "He (God) will give life to them Who created them for the first time! And He is the All-Knower of every creation!"

Oh shoot! sorry man, yea I should have read more carefully, as far as I know, if your e mail account remains inactive use for a long period of time, they automatically close it until you re-open or re-active it.

What about Airliners.net accounts? For example, assuming I die suddenly (with no warning or chance to post a final message in the A.net forums), would my A.net account remain active forever? What happens after a long period of inactivity?
