Following the popularity of Mad Men and the glow of that era, there will be a series set inside the walls and fuselages of Pan Am in it's glory days. There has been a fair amount of press about the show and I would figure everyone on A.net knows of it. I just wanted to let people know in and around Manhattan that they are filming out doors tonight starting at 8pm and Sunday morning (tomorrow) from 8 to 11am. There are filming permits (with PanAm globes) on East 18th st between Park Ave South and Irving Place. There is a 1950's style building on the south side of the street which would be a perfect backdrop! I can't promise what onlookers may see, but a group (actresses) playing "stewardess" in PA blue uniforms would be like a mirage!
Just thought Pan Am enthusiasts would like to know! I will be there!

The trailer on You Tube looks great, the attention to detail is spot on. The 1960's terminal at JFK, the 707's and the FA uniforms. I like it because ot proves America had their own version of the "Singapore Girl" before the current Asian FA's.

I've seen the promo. I noted a few scenes were the stewardesses are walking on to the a/c from an open, uncovered, fixed jet-bridge. Did the Worldport actually have those? A non-telescoping, fixed, elevated concrete sidewalk coming out from the terminal to which the front the a/c was parked up against allowing you to walk right on to the L1 door.

They absolutely did, the 707's pulled right under the covered gates. That terminal opened, as I remember in mid 1962, right after I moved to New York, and it was quite revolutionary.

I work on that block (225/233 PAS) and also saw the small posters noticing for this filming. They also this area to film scenes for the new 'Smurfs' movie, they used it for scenes in 'Ugly Betty' as well as 'Law and Order' and other TV series and movies. I guess they like to use this area as most of the buildings and their facades are not much changed from the 1950's-1960's and most of the buildings are 80 to over 100 years old.
I wonder if they will use the former HQ of PanAm at 200 Park (that in Park Avenue, not Park Avenue South, about 22 blocks away) and with digital tricks to put their name and logos over the current MetLife ones in this series.
I do hope that this series is not just about the sex lives of the f/a's and more about the aura of that era of travel, they are accurate as to era and of PanAm itself.

My initial thought was what year the show would be set in, and after researching that, the time period is right in line with the opening of the Pan Am Building in 1963. They could use a mix of digitally cleaned up stock footage and newly created digital renderings.
It really should be interesting to see if "Pan Am" as well's as NBC's "The Playboy Club" can tap into the 60s in the same way "Mad Men" has. One thing to consider is that the broadcasting standards that apply to ABC and NBC are different than those of cable channels like AMC, so the language as well as sexual content will have to be toned down considerably even with the shows being aired at 10 PM in the Eastern and Pacfic time zones (Which is the hour in which the "safe harbor" period for "indecent content" on broadcast TV begins in each time zone [10PM-6AM]), as they will air at 9 PM in the Central and Mountain time zones, which is an hour prior to the "safe harbor". I think that a show like "Mad Men" would lose some of its' reality if the language and sexual content were toned down (It would make it almost like a parody of the TV shows of that era.).
Honestly, I don't give either show much of a chance due to their time slots. "Pan Am" has "Desperate Housewives" as its' lead-in, a show that is in decline and "The Playboy Club" has "The Sing-Off" as their lead-in, which probably has a lot different audience in which most folks will be switching to something else. But then again, with the next season of "Mad Men" not coming out until next March, folks may need to get their fix in some ways with these shows.

That's possibly true for "PA", but that time slot hasn't got too much against it, and I suspect...but have no figures to support it...that a lot of airplane geeks will tune in after the wife has watched "DH"...again, not that I'd know anything about THAT...(snicker)
But, "Playboy Club" already has issues... I have seen that some NBC affiliates will not carry it due to the possible outcry from audience.
Sadly, my TV predictions have not been terribly sharp this year. Of the three new shows I made a point to watch, only "Hawaii Five-0" made it....so...what do I know, right?
If you don't stand for SOMETHING, you'll fall for ANYTHING.

I think Pan Am will definitely be a T&A show with a little bit of aviation thrown in. The story lines may or may not be good, but there will be plenty of jiggle for all to see.
What's strange is that it will be on Sunday nights. That's usually reserved for family viewing night, not T&A shows.
