Hi, guys!
Thought I'd kick off this installment of "Non-Aviation Photos" since the last thread got a bit long to load!
Here are my two most recent outings:
1) An engagement shoot for my high school friend and her fiance (sadly, I wasn't able to book their wedding as a follow-up. They went with a generic national "budget photographer" chain and I couldn't compete with their price). http://www.tisdigital.com/Alia_Scott/slideshow.html
Again playing with the macro tubes and 50mm f/1.8, I love this flower as it always reminds me of my fishing in Co. Donegal, Ireland on the River Drowes as the banks of the river were lined with these orange flowers.
If you're going for a more realistic look, then these are great! I, personally, prefer the really fake-looking HDRs, but most people don't, and it's a matter of personal preference.

Never has farming looked so wonderful, it really shows the polar differences in farming accross the continents when compared to the two farming photo's that I posted, great work, I hope you will be posting some more Bali photo's into this thread in the future
What a great and varied set, I am struggling to pick out a favourite though I really like "Tracks" I like the way the tracks in the snow act as lead in lines drawing you in to look around the photo
Quoting tz757300 (Reply 4): Here are some taken everywhere with my ok quality camera phone
Those are very impressive considering they are taken with a camera phone, I love the sunset, it's wonderful, I bet there are a fair number of high end camera users that would not be able to such a wonderful image nice one
I cannot wait, your panning photo's are wonderful, what lens were you using to get those out of interest

Thanks, I'm going to play with a friends 100mm f/2.8L macro lens tomorrow so I suspect that I'll be falling in love with that len's and then upsetting the bank manager not long after if I really like it
I think that both looks have there place in HDR but with these I was going for the more realistic look but just for you I'll post these, I cannot remember if I have posted them before so sorry if I have

Last week's De Graafschap -vs- Ajax game. This is the 1-0 but it ended 1-4. This photo was made from the stands alongside the rest of the supporters (Spinnekop area 15/16). I used the 100-400 at full length and cropped a bit as well.

Here's my first attempt at "The Brenizer Method", a method of using panorama stitching invented by Ryan Brenizer (www.ryanbrenizer.com) used to show images as if they were taken with an extreme-aperture wide lens.
I used a Canon 100mm f/2.8L lens, and shot 39 images which I then stitched together in Photoshop. The resulting image gives an "equivalent" image to a 30.5mm f/0.83 lens according to "Brett's Calculator" (http://brettmaxwellphoto.com/Brenizer-Method-Calculation/).

I was in Panama City Beach, Florida for the grand opening of the new airport, and I noticed this "Catmobile" in back of a Tattoo Parlor. It appeared to be a "highly modified" Dodge van. ( Note the big black "tail" sticking out the back and up over the roof. )
The Great Tiffany Dome ( the largest art glass dome in the world ), built in 1895, is in the Chicago Cultural Center on Michigan Ave., between Randolf and Washington in beautiful down-town Chicago. ( The C.C.C. is also the most "photographer friendly" big building of it's kind I have ever been in. ) They allow the use of flash, tripods, and even encourage people to take pictures.
I attended a wedding on South Padre Island, Texas, and this High School Student Mariachi Band provided part of the entertainment. The music was just fabulous, and some of their instruments were just fascinating. There was a whole bus load of students in the band, with many playing violins, guitars, that fabulous wheeled wooden harp, and the biggest guitar I have ever seen........the thing was almost as large as a cello! During their performance, several of the members of the band also sang solos (Spanish love songs for the bride and groom). I was one of only six non-Hispanic people in attendance, and the other 150 or so were all Mexican-Americans. All I can say is, it was the first wedding I have ever been to in my life that I REALLY enjoyed. ( If you ever have an opportunity to go to a Mexican wedding, don't pass it up! )
These three photos were taken hand held, with a very inexpensive little Fuji "mega-zoom" camera, and using ambient light. I plan to return to the Chicago Cultural Center and photograph the whole interior, this time using my D-300s, a tripod, and some decent Nikkor lenses.
About the frames; An accident really............................
A few years ago, I bought a copy of "Toast" to use in burning CD's; included with it was about half of a CD labeling app. for making CD jewel case inserts. I made tons of CD's, made art work for all of the jewel cases, and along the way, I became fairly proficient with this little app, finally started using it to create designs, and after a while, I started using the technique to create "one of a kind" digital frames for photos. What REALLY caused this to "take off", was when my friend Rob bought a huge 48 inch Mutoh commercial ink jet printer. Now I can make prints up to 36"X48",(as long as the file is big enough.)

Cheers mate. For the 24 Hours of Le Mans, I used a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS mounted on a Canon 7D. The camera is mine, but the lens is not! I rented it for the weekend. However, I was a bit disappointed with it. It gave me grainy images, even at the lowest possible ISO in daylight. I may have rented a bad sample or something. 2 years ago, my local photoshop lent me a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 and it gave me back great pictures.
For the night shots posted above, I could not use the flash since I was behind a fence. So I used the highest aperture possible (f/2.8), Image Stabilizer and maximum ISO. With the panning, the fence is "vanishing" on the picture, which is quite handy .
They were really tough pictures to make, though, and plenty went to the trash bin. It's in moments like this where you really feel how huge the gap is between amateurs like me and professionals!
Quoting petertenthije (Reply 11): I used the 100-400 at full length and cropped a bit as well.

I've been going every year since 1988. My parents live 1 hour away from the track. When I moved to Ireland, I was taking my summer holidays in June so I could keep going to the race. Same thing now that I moved to Canada. It just cost me more money
It's a fantastic race, but honestly, it's not as good as it was before. The track is being "modernized" and it's getting a bit bland.
I think the best period ever was the end of the 80s, when cars were doing almost 400 km/h in the Mulsanne straight. I know it was dangerous, but that was epic to watch at the time.
Seriously, over the past decade, the amount of Danish people coming to the race has grown like crazy, thanks to Tom K. He's been a fantastic advertiser for the race in Denmark. I do hope he races for another 10 years so that your fellew citizens keep coming to the race!

Here are some from this Sunday
First of all between 2-4.30am I was out having a bit of wool fun this is one of the results
WIRE WOOL #2 by mwhcvt, on Flickr
Canon 450D - 17-85mm f/4-5.6
Exposure 64
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 17 mm
ISO Speed 400
This is achieved for those that don't know by burning wirewool and then spinning the burning wool around in a cage to give this effect, a word of caution, fire fighting materials are a must when doing this type of shoot and a lot of planning goes into ensuring that any shoot I do is done with safety in mind.
Then I when home for a couple of hours sleep before heading to the approaches to the Land Rover Max show, thanks to the great panning posted above by GH I was inspired to go out and have a go myself so here are a few from out side of the Land Rover Max show
Canon 450D - 17-85mm f/4-5.6
Exposure 0.02 sec (1/50)
Aperture f/4.5
Focal Length 28 mm
ISO Speed 400
Later that day I attended the TalkPhotography Warwickshire and West Midlands Monthly meet, this was at Warwick this time for the Classic/Retro Car Gathering that had been organised, here are a couple of photo's from that

I'm not even old enough to have experienced the Le Mans in the late 80's, or I would have been too young to understand or remember any of it. Once again, you are fortunate to have experienced it over decades!

Recently went back to my home town to visit some folks and play tourist for the day. And the highlight was as always visiting our 12th century Cathedral, which is the single location in Europe with the highest number of Royal burials (20 kings, 18 queens - I think that's the count).
I was using a simple point and shoot, so most of the photos aren't the good - though to be fair, the light was absolutely terrible
From the days of absolute monarchy, where the King was seen as God's substitute on Earth. And you can tell in some of the burial chapels (there's 4 of them, each built in the architectural style that was fashionable when its construction began - and in the late 18th century, that was Neoclassicism). In the center is the sarcophagus of Frederick V of Denmark.
Frederick V's chapel is generally regarded as one of the finest examples of Neoclassicism in Denmark. Which makes sense, as the burial chapel was regarded as the artists' big shot at showing off their work. Which I guess is why it took 51 years to complete it

I've been mostly taking and editing aviation photos recently, so haven't really had a chance to post some of my nonav ones. So here's one:
This little guy had the courtesy to visit my kitchen and pose for some photos the other day. Unfortunately, I don't have a macro lens, so the quality isn't great. But not bad, considering he was probably about an inch long including antenna, and I was using a 70-300 zoomed almost all the way in from about 6 feet away.
Don't know if it was the flash, but the little star pattern in his eye is pretty neat!

Well, just when I thought I didn't have many photos to post here....
We had a bit of excitement tonight at our apartment building. I was sitting at my desk on the 2nd floor in front of the window, and suddenly smelled a candle-like smell. Thought it might be my computer, but then realized it was coming from outside.
So I walked down the stairs, and when I reach the bottom, I heard a loud crash. I walked out to the back porch, and this is what I saw two apartments down:
Immediately dialed 911. After that, ran out the front door to the hallway to see if anyone needed help. There was a group of people outside already, and others had called 911 too. Then ran out to the street and flagged down a passing police car (not sure if he was already coming here or not). Took him in through my apartment to the back porch. While he was there, I grabbed my camera and shot a few photos, including the one above.
We then had to evacuate when the fire department got here (probably within 5 minutes of calling - good response time in my opinion!). We were allowed back into our apartment about a half hour ago. Took a few photos of the aftermath as well:
Kinda crazy! Very glad that apparently no one was injured.

Anyway, I finally got some landscape shooting in this past weekend. Was up in Big Bear, CA for the first time. Freaking beautiful! Full gallery here (not yet complete):
There was a lot of silent lightning in the distance....I took a bunch of 30-second exposures to try and capture it. Unfortunately the shot is slightly blurry (since I wasn't up there to shoot, I didn't bring my tripod )

Figured I'd try this framing out, and it's odd, but I kind of like it:

Nice ones! I've wanted to try this.
A couple weeks ago I went to the Photoshop World Expo in Las Vegas. There was an area with lighting booths set up with models so I got a chance to try some portrait/studio photography. I had NO experience with this before so I found it to be a lot of fun. It's all still way over my head, but it's someting I would like to learn more about.

This panorama just took me about 4-5 hours to put together. First time I've done most of it manually. End product is cool, but I don't want to do it again anytime soon!
Anyway, this was the view from Redondo Beach a bit before sunset today:

So I did some HDR on that beach panorama that I posted. That was my plan the whole time, but I hadn't gotten around to it when I posted the photo.
This brings up the question: What method would you guys use if you needed/wanted to do HDR on a panorama? The question arises because although I shoot RAW, I'm not sure that I have any method available for stitching RAW images together, and saving the result as another RAW file. Since I'm doing HDR with two edits from a single exposure, the result is much better if I do it in RAW rather than JPEG. But I'm not sure if that option is somehow available.
The only other option I can see is doing individual HDR on each photo in the stitch.....but that's not appealing at all.
Thanks much for any input.
Anyway, here you go:

This is the best method, unfortunately. Otherwise you will be dealing with multiple panoramas that were stitched together slightly differently and the final HDR wont match up properly.
I created this panorama from 4 separate exposure fusions. The process for exposure fusion is pretty much the same as HDR so I can use this as an example. Create an HDR using your brackets for each image you wish to use for the pano. Then stitch the final HDRs together. CS5's Photomerge is AMAZING at stitching with ease...

What I was thinking was if I were able to stitch the RAW images together, then I could export a couple different overall exposures.
That's exactly what I do for HDR anyway - make them from a single image. So I guess really I was asking if there's a way to stitch RAW images together. Canon's Photostitch hasn't worked for me.
Unfortunately, CS3's auto-align and auto-blend only work on certain panoramas I've done. That's why I ended up doing that one by hand. It was a good learning experience, if rather painful. I do have CS5, but it's generally too slow on my computer.

I hate to nitpick, but if you are using only 1 exposure, it's not HDR. Sorry, just a pet peeve..
And selecting RAWs in photomerge is no problem. Im curious why photomerge hasn't worked for you. It's too easy!

Ah, that's fine - call it what you will (fake HDR, whatever). Still works pretty well, I think (a.k.a. well enough for my purposes).

Don't know, really. Is Photomerge the same as when you have each image in the panorama as one layer, and use the "auto-align layers" and "auto-blend layers" functions? That's what I'd read about online somewhere.
I haven't really tried in CS5, so I don't know if it's more advanced compared to CS3.
Thanks a lot - I really appreciate your responses.

In CS5 go File ---> Automate ---> Photomerge. Select a method, open your files and VOILA!

Holy. Crap.
I just tried this in CS3 with the same panorama photos....30 seconds later, I had what took me 4 hours to do by hand.
Can't believe I never knew about that before!
Thank you very much for the tips - I owe you one for that!
The good news is that the automated merge result looks very close to what I got by hand. Glad to know I wasn't totally off base with how I went about it. The even better news is that I (hopefully) never have to do that again.

It's amazing to see the quality of the images that keep getting posted and it's a pleasure to follow those a.netter that are on flickr, away from this site also as they are amazing even if Ryan keeps posting stunning images right after I've posted and showing my images up
I've just invested in a B&W ND110 filter, for those that don't know this is a filter that dramatically increases the exposure time by cutting the light reaching the sensor, actually making your exposure 1024 times longer than it would be if unfiltered, these are the photo's that I've published from using that filter 281/365 by mwhcvt, on Flickr

I only post after you because you're typically the one to bump the thread back up, thus bringing it back to my attention.

It's wonderful what this filter allows you to achieve
