AFL (Aussie Rules) Grand Final - Pies Vs Cats

It's just about that time of year again down here, the AFL Grand Final will be played next Saturday at the MCG between Collingwood (the Pies) and Geelong (the Cats). The Pelimnary final last night between Hawthorn & Collingwood was a cracker of a game, Hawthorn were leading til the final quarter, then the lead see-sawed between the 2 teams. The pies took a goal with less than 3 minutes to go, winning them the game, the Hawks were robbed... The Cats won against West Coast this afternoon, putting them into the final.

So another Collingwood Grand Final, and next week will be a big one in Geelong as the whole town gets ready for Saturday.... Go Cats!

I know that it's not particularly original to hate Collingwood, but I'm not sure I could stomach that feral mob winning back-to-back premierships.

Please Geelong, for the sake of all that is decent, kick their butts (again) next week.

A bit disappointed, was hoping for something more exciting. Quite sick of Collingwood and Geelong.

But, I will say that I will be cheering for the Cats, can't say I'm a Collingwood fan.....

I'm a Bombers fan*, but I will be cheering for the Cats, not because it is apparently the done thing to cheer for anyone but Collingwood, rather my brother-in-law is a Cats fan.

*For no other reason than...

1. They have an aircraft as a club logo.
2. Their colours are red and black, matching the colours of The Crusaders and Canterbury rugby teams in NZ.

This Tigers supporter says the same.

GO CATS as well!!

I wished I could have seen the Collingwood vs Hawthorn match but I was working, I was listening to it on the radio but it cut out and when it came back the match was basically over, I knew the Pies were going to find a way to win.

Just to add to Collingwood's 'feral' image, here's a youtube clip of a Collingwood player whacking an umpire in game in the mid 80's. He then goes on to have a go at a spectator in the stands, he got a 10 year suspension for his trouble, which effecively ended his football career.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDMlxoUhPSo

And here's one of Jacko (he of the Energiser commercials), Geelong was one of the clubs he spent time playing with. Until I watched this one, I'd forgotten what a goal-bagger he was. Unfortantly he couldn't keep out of trouble & ran out of paitence with the various clubs he played with.

I don't know, I would think that honour (dishonour?) belongs to Carlton.

Good choice, barracking for the Bombers   I'm also an Essendon supporter who'll be going for the Geelong this weekend. Incidentally, does anyone know if a rookie AFL coach has ever coached their side to a premiership? It would be a tremendous achievement for Chris Scott in his first season as senior coach if he can get the Cats to a premiership. For that reason alone, I'll be backing the Cats to win.

The other reason is that if Collingwood win this premership, they'll join Essendon and Carlton as the AFL's most successful sides with 16 premierships apiece. I don't want that to happen.

Manly-Warringah v The Warriors. Looking for a Silvertails win next week so Robertson and Rodney can bring some of that winning magic to London next year

Dane Swan from Collingwood was awarded the Brownlow Medal ( for the best & fairest player) last night. Just hope it's not an omen that Collingwood will actually win on Saturday!

The TV coverage of the medal count drew some flack with a 'spinning pod' used to show off the fashions worn by some of the girlfriends/wives of the players. The Brownlow ceremony is big business in itself, there are massive amounts wagered on the outcome of the count, and then there is the fashion side of things with the wives/girlfriends, think of the Oscars meets the NFL draft..... A lot of the high-profile players & their partners are dressed for free by the likes of Versace, etc, in the same manner as the Oscars, Emmys, etc.

From what I have heard from people in Melbourne that know more about the footy culture than I do. Most of the gripe about Collingwood is not about the team as the players don't play dirty as far as I know but is about the Collingwood supporters that everyone thinks is filth.

What is it about Collingwood (fans) that brings that reputation? I know in Scottish Football, Glasgow Rangers and their fans have a similar reputation.

I have to disagree, of all AFL followers that I know (that aren't Collingwood supporters), dislike Collingwood the most. Although, Carlton isn't much liked either.

This is not what I worry about, but I could imagine Collingwood going to the grand final again next year, and that could mean they become the most successful club in AFL history!!! :O

Another Youtube find, the post-game wrapup of the 1974 Grand Final (Richmond v North Melbourne).

Check out a young Kevin Sheedy about 45 seconds in!

Only the last 20 minutes or so of the game was shown live in Melbourne I believe, the VFL demanded this to 'protect' ticket sales. The rest of the country could watch the game live, but those in MEL had to wait until later that night to see the full match. This was long before the Grand Final became an event mainly for the corporate crowd, it wasn't for another few years that the full game was shown live in Melbourne. Also notice the lack of fanfare with the presentation of the Premiership cup.

If I could be bothered barracking, I'd be barracking for not Collingwood

(says a former Richmond, then Norths and now nominally Swans supporter)

And although I have even less interest in NRL, it's made even worse as not Manly is Auckland and it's diffcult to decide which is worse - apart from Melbourne, of course

What's the difference between a Collingwood supporter and a park bench?

A park bench can support a family
