In early 90s, Amtrak had a train called the Desert Wind. The Desert Wind was the morning train from Los Angeles to Chicago ( The South West Chief depart in the evening) and it was the only Amtrak service from Los Angeles to Las Vegas at the time . The Desert Wind was discontinued around 1996, meaning on more service to Vegas form LA by rail. I believe, Amtrak tried to start another LA-Vegas service in the late 90s/early 2000, but I did not hear too much about it. I would like to know some info on this train, like what time in the morning, did it depart Los Angeles, and what time did it return back to Los Angeles? I believe it ran on pre merger Union Pacific tracks. Also why did Amtrak discontinue this train?
PS: Two things I liked about the Desert Wind. It had the same final destination as The South West Chief, but it depart in the morning like the Coast Starlight, and it went to Vegas.
