Which is your favorite book, album (I still say album) or movie you came across in 2011?
While I have no clear favorite movie, the best book I read in 2011 was

Barbara Demick - Nothing to Envy: Real Lives in North Korea
It's a personal, haunting and well-written report on the lives of six defectors who made it to South Korea. Sometimes, the book reads like a novel by John Irving.

Album:
EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints
Yes, this is an artists who tries to look cool and uses an acronym, two things I don't particularly like. But surprisingly enough, she sounds like a combination of Patti Smith, Nirvana and Lou Reed, a bit 90ish perhaps, worse yet, the album fell victim to the 'loudness war' - all true, but it is still a great debut album.

Best of 2011 for me was Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs.

Pretty blunt book, showing the warts as well as the wonders. But an exception insight into just what that genius brought - they guy did "make a dent in the universe".

Im half way thru this book as we speak. Its incredible an very surreal. Its amazing how "humanity" reveals its self when you focus on individuals rather than a group of people.

My best companion to this book has been Google earth. Whenever a city is mentioned i "visit" it virtually and try to picture how these poor people live. Its mesmerizing.

Favorite moive.. none in particular.. Although i have high hopes for the American version of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Same here, there's a map of NK on the first pages of the book, but Google Earth is of course better.

Favorite movie of 2011, call me a nerd or what you will, but I liked Happy Feet 2. My wife likes penguins, and I like how they did Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" in the film.

I don't have a favorite album, but my favorite song is Firework by Katy Perry. It's a bit of a personal interest for me while I continue to find the right job. Speaking of which, the other day I found someone who had passed away -- one of the most unpleasant and saddest experiences of my life.

I'm jealous. I missed them the last time they came to Boston.
