Bill Gates, love him or hate him gave a speech recently at a high school graduation ceremony. His position cannot be denied. So what he has to say might be worth listening to. He talked about how feel-good politically correct methodology has created a generation of kids with absolutely no concept of reality and how they are all being set up for failure in the adult world.
I typed this up from a letter given to me. I could not agree with this more. At last, someone has hit the nail squarely and entirely on the head. So I present it to all of you who think you know it all in the most in-your-face, down your throat, and condescending way possible. Let's see any of you try to shoot any of this down.
Oh yeah....and good luck to all of you.
Rule #1: Life isn’t fair. Get used to that.
Rule #2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule #3: You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule #4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.
Rule #5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: opportunity.
Rule #6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault. Quite whining about your mistakes, and learn from them.
Rule #7: Before you were born, your parents’ weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes, and listening to you talk about how cool you think you are. So before you go and save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents’ generation, try cleaning out your own damn closet.
Rule #8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life has not. In some schools, they have done away with failing grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This bears absolutely no resemblance to anything in real life.
Rule #9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summer off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time!
Rule #10: Television is NOT real life. People actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule #11: be nice to the nerds. Chances are one of them will be your boss.
