Nice tilt-shift! You're learning, grasshopper!
I bought myself a 5D Mk II for Christmas in anticipation of a busier wedding season. Got to really put it through it's paces during Christmas, and here are some results (all taken with 5DMkII and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 or Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro).

Thanks I was your photo's that introduced me into the art of tilt shift I don't do many as it has to be the perfect location but when I do it I always love it
Now that's a very nice Christmas present I wouldn't mind one of them myself but I think for the time being I'll be treating myself to a low actuation 5DClassic

Holy CRAP that's a lot of smiley faces!!!!! You use them like periods! I've used a 5D Classic quite a bit, and I'll advise you against it. It will disappoint you. The LCD screen is too small, ISO performance isn't great, focus is quite bad. My Mark II is a phenomenal machine, and you'll be much happier if you continue to save up and get a MkII.
As for forums, I prefer dpreview.com among the photo groups. A more diverse group, much more to read, and some great people (though I admit there are some guys there who refuse to help those who want to learn, and spend their time harassing the new guys and telling them they suck). I am also a creature of habit and have the same username there.

Since you guys are discussing camera bodies a bit, I thought I'd throw my question out there:
I'm hoping to upgrade camera bodies at some point in the next year or so. I currently have a Rebel XS, which has served me just fine, but I'd like 1.) a few more megapixels (XS has 10), 2.) faster frame rate and larger burst (XS has 1.5 and approx 3, respectively, when shooting RAW), 3.) higher max ISO (XS has 1600).
Those are my main considerations, though having HD movie recording might be cool as well, but that's a bonus, not an essential.
I was originally considering the T3i/600D, but then I realized that the T2i/550D appears almost identical with a lower price. The T2i has 18 MP, 3.7 frames/sec, max 6 frames RAW burst, and max ISO6400. Additionally it has the DIGIC 4 processor, versus the DIGIC 3 in the XS. I believe the T3i has the same specs, as far as what I listed.
My max budget will probably be around $800, unless I wait even longer (though it may not change!). My question is simple - is this a worthwhile upgrade? Should I instead look for something like a used 7D or 50D? While I'd love to jump to the XXD series, there's quite a price jump there as well.
Thanks for any and all input!

If $800 is your max, the T2i or T3i would be the way to go. Or I would think by now, you can pick up a 50D for that price by now, especially used.
Otherwise my recommendation would be to save up for the 7D. I absolutely LOVE mine.
Anyway, back to photo sharing! I uploaded this one to Flickr today.
Upgrading from a Rebel to a Rebel isn't worth it at all. Remember that, for all intents and purposes, more megapixels in the same size sensor will yield worse noise performance and lesser quality (even though the new Rebels have more megapixels, the sensor's physical size is the same, so you're getting higher pixel density which causes more noise).
If you're going to upgrade, do it right. Go from a Rebel to a XXD or a 7D (or even a 5D - you can get a new 5D Mk II for under 2,000 dollars now). I use a 50D and I love it. Paired with some nice fast glass (the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 was my favorite lens until I sold it) it's just stellar.
Now. Having said all that. Getting new, high-quality glass (like the 17-40L you just ordered) will give you a far more significant upgrade then moving to a new body but keeping your same lenses. If you were to pair your Rebel with a Canon 35L or a Canon 50L (though probably too expensive for you) then you'd be absolutely blown away, I guarantee it. Even the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 that I just bought would open up quality you didn't think was possible in the Rebel.
You also mentioned noise performance was a concern. Just because the 7D has a higher maximum ISO, doesn't mean it performs better. I'm very disappointed with my 50D's noise performance, even at ISO800. It creates the need for post-processing noise reduction which takes time to do well. If you really, really want good noise performance, you have to either move to Nikon (if you want to stay in crop bodies) or move to a full-frame like the 5D.

I agree. I see a lot of people do this, and I always scratch my head. I went from the XTi to the obsolete 40D and even that was considered an upgrade even though megapixel count was identical. I wanted the upgrade in features, not image quality. Better build, more features etc. made it a worthwhile upgrade.

Even though the max ISO on the 7D is the same as the newer Rebels, the 7D performs better at the high ISOs, in my opinion. It's not easy, but I have taken some decent stuff at ISO 6400. The 5D is WAY better at that ISO, but you can't really compare the 5Dmk2 to the cropped cameras.
But again, when I got my used 7D, I was looking for better features. Higher ISO range was nice, and I can shoot at 1600-2000 no problem (unlike the rebels), but I wanted the larger, high res screen, the internal leveler, the better auto focus, and the faster burst rate. If you like to fire off brackets, 8FPS lets you fire off handheld brackets, no problem! So yeah, the megapixel jump is usually the last thing on my mind when I choose to upgrade.

Like I said, I'd love to go to a 50D, and if the price is right, I will certainly do it.
It actually appears that the 60D is cheaper....I remember reading some relatively negative opinions of it, though.

True, and I'm excited as hell for the 17-40L to arrive! However, it won't give me a higher frame rate, higher burst, or higher max ISO, all of which I would like. I suppose you would consider those "features" rather than image quality issues, as Silver1SWA said. I'm not unhappy with my camera's image quality.
Quoting ANITIX87 (Reply 9): You also mentioned noise performance was a concern.
I didn't, actually. I said I'd like a larger ISO range. I'm actually moderately happy with the XS's noise performance these days. A lot of it was learning how to expose correctly at higher ISOs - they're much less forgiving of underexposure or whatever. I've been taking far more photos at ISO800 and 1600 recently.
Thanks very much guys.

Doing the same for the stadium shot at the top was even harder, because the shot during the day had a crowd in, and the shot at night, didn't.

Very true, and thanks. I realized before I edited it that I didn't really need the extra exposures, but since I had them, I figured I'd fool around and see what I came up with.
After being inspired by your (and others') star trail photos for months now, I finally gave it a try. I was helped by a quite clear night, and finding a lookout point reasonably far from lights. Also caught a really weird blue light shining from somewhere:

So earlier tonight, there was a thin layer of clouds. It was just the right conditions to get a very nice moon halo. There is a competion next week, and the subject is "Motion", so I've taken the plunge and decided to enter. One of the pics I've picked is of a skater, which I took on my point-and shoot, so it's not the best quality. He's a bit lost in the pic, so one of my options was to convert the background to black and white to make him really stand out, but I'm afraid this might seem a bit gimmicy by the panel. There's some banding in the sky that I had serious trouble getting rid of. It's not in the originals, so I assume it resulted from the blending of the multiple frames. Anyone have any suggestions for how to deal with that?

Recognize the location, right off where I work. Have you ever been around the rougher parts of downtown to shoot some photos. It is in my "to-do" list although I still haven't figured out how safe it is.

I've been around the rougher parts of downtown, but not to shoot photos. You'd probably be fine during the day (though I might avoid bringing a bunch of expensive camera equipment to Skid Row), but I wouldn't go walking around shooting there at night.
I'm not a huge fan of downtown LA, so I'm not up there much anyways.

On Wednesday I spent 24 hours at Disneyland for their Leap Day promotion called One More Disney Day where both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World were open for 24 hours. I arrived at 5am on 2/29 to get in line for park opening at 6am and I was in the park until 6:45am on 3/1. The shot I was after was sunrise and I got to experience two consecutive sunrises at Disneyland. Due to regular park hours, experiencing sunrise at Disneyland is not possible so this was a once in a lifetime experience. Here's a few shots from that 24 hour experience. These shots are not public, so the links will not work. But you can see the photos as linked in this thread...
Also, they were filiming the ABC show, Modern Family. I snapped a few shots before I was scolded. I'm sure they thought I was paparazzi because of my "pro" equipment...

This is about the only non-airplane shot I've taken in the last week (also posted the link in the stargazing thread). Jupiter and Venus setting above San Vicente Light:

Noticed a daddy-long-legs perched in a corner of the bathroom yesterday. He was still there today, so grabbed my 18-55 (now my default pseudo-macro lens) and troubled him a bit (though he was actually quite cooperative).
God I really need to get a real macro lens one of these days. Those are difficult shots to take....especially when you have a small irrational fear of spiders, and you're putting your camera (and your face) within a foot of one.

It IS getting very quiet in here. Nice abstract BTW. The fantastic weather since spring has sprung has been a great opportunity to start snapping again:

Out of curiosity, has anyone else posting here had any of their pics hijacked and posted on other sites? I discovered this by accident recently when I clicked on the "Stats" tab on my Photobucket account. I only post pics on this site, so was somewhat surprised to find some of them appearing elsewhere on the web. They would not -- in my opinion -- be my best pics, which makes it all the more puzzling, although the one below has re-appeared in a thread on the Tbilisi metro on an architcture site called Skyscrapercity.com, which probably explains it. Why the poster couldn't find a better pic online is a bit of a mystery, although I suppose I should be flattered:
which isn't a bad pic, but nothing worth hijacking IMO. Some pics seem to regularly show up on google.co.uk and google.com, which has me scratching my head, I have to say.

This is why I normally link to my photos hosted on flickr where only a low res version can be viewed but not downloaded. Still not impossible to have them stolen, but an added layer of safety versus other methods I suppose.
Anyway, it's been a while since I have contributed. Last week I took a helicopter flight above downtown Los Angeles with a buddy who shoots for a local postcard company. I was just along for the experience and due to the time of day my camera was pushed to it's limits so the quality isn't that great, but I came home with a few decent shots. He was shooting with a Nikon D3 and a gyro stabilizer rig so the time of day was no problem for him. Still, it was a neat experience!
I've actually had a photo or two linked from there, but I believe it was photos from A.net rather than my Flickr or Smugmug. Unfortunately it seems the last click was more than a month ago, as it doesn't show up in my "Links to your Photos" page anymore.
I have no problem with people linking to my photos - the more the better! Actually taking them and putting them on a website would be another story. My Smugmug ones are all watermarked, and my Flickr ones are all 1024 pixels. A.net is actually the most likely candidate for stolen photos, as you don't see watermarks with a 1st class membership.
Here's the current screenshot from my Smugmug referrers page:
Most of the Google ones are searches.

Love the 2nd shot! I've actually been looking for a good vantage point for downtown LA at sunset - any ideas?

May not be the most technically sound pic but its my favourite of a walk around Manchester yesterday. I was trying to be discreet so the framing may not be the best.

Spent some time photographing the World Championship distances in speed skating last Saturday. Something totally different from planes, but still I bagged some decent shots and the whole experience was just great. I posted a few 'teasers' below, the rest can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kasvanzonneveld/sets/72157629670681523/

We must be coming near the end of this thread so here's a few more from the Q1 folder:
So, I joined the local camera club a couple of months ago and was about to enter my first competition (subject: Motion) when I asked for advice on here about a pic. A second competition (subject: People [monochrome]) followed, and judging on both was held tonight.. So, rather nervously, I took my seat in the room while the judge, a female photographer from a camera club in Dublin, went through all the pics one by one after they were divided into "Novice" and "Advanced" categories, and gave her critique and marks. Naturally, mine were in the "Novice" category.
She liked this one, and awarded it third prize in the Motion category.
She loved this one and awarded it first prize in the People category, which was a bit of a surprise -- even though I always loved the shot -- as it was only taken on my point-and-shoot. But hey . . . I'm not complaining!
And apologies for the bragging, but I just had to share, as they were my first competitions . . .

Awesome, congratulations!
Well, my 18-55 has certainly found new life as a close-up lens. I also seem to have a strange new obsession with taking photos of spiders and insects whenever I see them. This is odd, because I really am not a big fan of either, and even looking at my photos of them is not particularly enjoyable.
This little one was hanging out on my bedroom wall just now when I got home. It kindly stayed put for photos:
