Dear A.netters,
there will be a very special event coming up around the German aviation scene this year.
TXL and SXF will shutting down on the evening of Saturday, 02.06.2012.
BER should be ready for business in the morning of Sunday, 03.06.2012.
Some people here have already discussed about it.
Something not to miss, isn´t it?.
And of course some aviation talking in between, maybe a few beers, coffee or whatever sounds interesting or not?.
So I will keep this thread updated from time to time and anyone who decides to go for Berlin, please fill in the dates.
I'll be there if nothing goes wrong and get into the details shortly.
I used the format from the previous meeting, hope that is ok. I think that FlyingFinn will have some problems adding all his flights to and from BER
I hope to meet as many a.netters as possible at BER that weekend. A.net meeting are great fun and I recommend them to everyone. Looking forward to June already!

If you fly in on June 2nd, and you want to experience TXL for the last time, make sure you don't arrive too late (best during morning or early afternoon), because a lot of TXL flights will actually land at SXF later in the day, and some even at BER, it seems.
The "grand opening" will be a few days earlier, on May 24th, but there should still be plenty to see at BER on June 3rd, e.g. LH will operate the A380 into Berlin.

Only way to do this (OV ARN-TLL-AMS) is to DEPART ON THE LAST FLIGHT EX TXL on the 2nd of June on BT0214 to RIX, stay overnight there, and take the 1st BT0101 flight RIX-ARN.on the 3rd of June..would be nice to be on the last flight ex TXL !!! Moreover 88.12EUR is a bargain IMHO

For the moment I will add myself to the Maybe-list.
Unless I come up with some weird and interesting routing to TXL and from BER to cover the 160 miles between HAJ and Berlin's airports I might as well take either the train or the car.
Actually I am not too keen to become part of the crowd that tries to navigate through BER's terminal during the initial days of operations. that all works well, but chances are fairly high that something goes wrong leading to delays.

aero.de has an article that two parallel departures are planned for the opening of BER at 0530h :
1. AB (unknown type and destination) departing from the northern runway
2. LH A380 to FRA departing from the southern runway.
Expect a close run for the a/c that lifts off earlier ...

and.........I meant, the last flight that day (2nd) to RIX; am aware of the LH flight to MUC being the last (@ 2130)...again, I'd rather be on one of the last flights out of TXL ever than being put to challenges at BBI on the inaugural day; many days left for that airport to try out (and not for TXL for that matter)...

Quoting MH017 (Reply 41): still contemplating on a TXL-RIX stretch on BT on 02jun and a RIX-ARN (on BT)-
I flew that routing in January salvaging some investments made for the ARN-meeting from which I had to pull out for health reasons (= some strange cold). BT was chosen mainly on cost (and also being a new carrier for me), as I was unable to contact AB on the phone to change my reservation HAJ to AJR which in due course expired.
I was positively impressed by BT.
Check-in was quick (handled by staff wearing AB-badges) performed in the annex building left of the Ess-Bahn restaurant. While being a temp-structure its experince was better than using one of the main gates.
A/C (B737-550 IIRC) was parked some paces from the building, but still it was "down the stairs and walk up to the aircraft" = the way I like it).
While booking I had preordered a set meal (at a fairly steep cost of 15 € including a bottle of bland Chardonnay), but quality was pretty good.
Connection in RIX (2 hours) was hassle-free as was the flight to ARN (DH8-Q400) where I stayed for the night at the very convenient Radisson Blu Sky City (on Club Carlson points as the SEK-rate was skyhigh booking 2 days in advance).
I would not hesitate to use BT again.

I feel very ambivalent about this. I'm excited about the new BER, but really sad they are closing TXL which ranks as one of my very favorite airports in the world--it's just so simple and convenient. I was already majorly bummed when they closed THF.

A slight change in my itiniary. Transavia has decided to cancel the AMS-BER route in favor of a EIN-BER route. Makes sense, as the BER route was a bit of on oddball route ex-AMS anyway. Most routes out of AMS are to the Mediterreanen or sunny resort place, and most city routes had allready been moved to 'the provinces', mostly to RTM, but they are expanding in EIN. Timings of the new BER-EIN were similair to the original BER-AMS so when asked if I wanted to be rebooked or be refunded I chose the former. Added bonus: EIN will be a new airport.

Challenge will be to get from CSO to Madgeburg (for train to Berlin).
Rental car will be a costly option. See the airports website for offerings (2 agencies, but I assume that only Hertz will do oneway rentals CSO to Berlin)..
Not sure of the Shuttle offered on the airport's website will run for this flight, as it says "for international flights only". In any case it needs to be reserved up front.
Not sure if taxis are waiting at the airport. A ride to Magdeburg will be 45 km, so will be costly.
Alternative could be a taxi ride into Aschersleben, located south of the airport with a distance of only 15 km. If no taxi is waiting at the airport, it should be possible to call one from Aschersleben to pick you up there.
From Aschersleben train station it is 2.5 to 3 hours to Berlin with 1 or 2 transfers.
Discounted fares (ticket to be purchased in advance online) are 19 €; full fare tickets range between 33 and 49 € depending on type of trains.

That's indeed true. Even after studying the local bus routes and schedules a long foot march will be necessary to reach a suitable bus stop. I'll do whatever I can to avoid a taxi. But of course if I decided to book I'll first write CSO airport whether they can provide the shuttle.

Ain't too bad for an *International" airport, isn't it ?
Unfortunately (for you) I have booked my train tickets already, as otherwise could have offered to pick you up at CSO enroute to Berlin.
Leisurely driving through the Madgeburg Flat enjoying the landscape would be a welcomed diversion from dodging bumper-to-bumper truck traffic on motorway A2.
I have had a deeper look into the Shuttle schedule. I only runs timed for FR-movements. No movement by FR on Fridays at all, so there will be no shuttle to Magdeburg.
A taxi ride to Aschersleben shouldn't be too expensive as it is only 15 km. I would expect a fare in the range of 25 € or so.

Opinions ?
For me it is a mixed bag.
My hotel reservation can be canceled w/o penalty and canceling my train tickets will leave me with a loss of about 40 € only. OTOH I would miss a late (but not "last") chance to do some spotting at TXL and to enjoy a Currywurst at the EssBahn ...
Again: Opinions ?

Carpe diem ! Life is too short to waste your time ! Keep in mind, that today is the first day of the rest of your life !
How about continue as an A.net meeting anyway? I've booked for a day trip. Assuming my flights revert to the airlines' original aorports, I'll arrive on Sunday morning at SXF and depart from TXL in the evening. So, how about a picnic in the THF park? For me at least it will mean a hat trick of Berlin airports I won't be canceling my flights, and it would still be good to meet up with some other A.netters...

My plans are unchanged as well.
Since my day starts at 3.45 I'm planning on going to my hotel (Albergo) immediatly after arrival (maybe a quick act de prescence, but not more). Late afternoon and evening I'm thinking about spending the time in Berlin itself. Sunday I'll be in TXL until around 14:00 before heading back to SXF for my flight home at 17:05.
Greetings
Marc

Hi !
Sorry to say that I'm definitely not going. Flights are full from TXL to ARN so can't make it. Hopefully next time.
It's really too bad that I can't attend but it's just too complicated and too expensive for me to find a different route. I will really try to make it the next time. Would love to meet up with you guys.
