Who Is Planning On Getting The New IPad?

With the new iPad right around the corner, who is planning on getting it?

It's pretty much a given that there will be a retina display and an A6 chip. Siri will most likely also be included and a possible redesign (although I don't see it as likely). LTE may also be included.

Will it be your first iPad or will you be upgrading from either the 1st gen or the iPad 2?

I will be pre-ordering myself one as soon as it become available to pre-order once it has been announced.

If it does indeed have a Retina Display, I'll most probably replace my iPad 1 with it.

Jordan;

Every time a new "gaget" comes out, it seems we all have to start all over again ! Do we need it ? Do we feel like paying for it ? Does it do anything different ( or better ) than what it is replacing ? Did I even need the first one ? On and on.......

I have watched all of this from my somewhat "detached" vantage point since Apple first introduced the very first iPod. (which I didn't buy, by the way ); when I first became aware of people talking about "tablets", for a time there, I assumed they were talking about aspirin tablets ! When I first noticed a Tablet in a computer store, my first question (to myself ) was......who needs something this "dinky" ? For that matter, who even needs all of these dinky lap tops I see everyone dragging around when I'm in an airport ? ( I had a HUGE big custom-built PC at the time; kinda the "bigger is better" mind-set )

Finally, (after much encouragement from my engineer son), I bought my first "Fruit Store Product".......my mirrored-door Power Mac ! For some reason, at about the same time, I began to realize my "quality of life" was incomplete without an iPod ! So I bought my first (and so far only) photo iPod; I still have it, I still use it, it still works just like it did when I bought it, ( and I'm almost sure I probably have the most meticulously typed out "play list" of any iPod Apple has ever sold ! )

All of Mozart's Symphonies, Piano Concertos, Operas, and half of everything else he ever wrote
Ditto; Beethoven, (and about 30 more composers too numerous to type or read )
Everything by Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, Verdi, Rossini, Bellini, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, ( and several hundred more too numerous to type, punctuate, number, or even read ) ( What I'm really hoping to see someone come out with is a big contest for "Best typed, numbered, punctuated, iPod list of all time; I should win with ease ! ) ( Did I mention, every tune CCR ever did, Moody Blues, and even 1 Beatles tune. ( OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA ) ( never could say it, but love to listen to it 59 times in a row )

I say that because, about 8 or 9 yrs ago, before I had been fortunate enough to meet my fiance', ( Miss Arlie ), I happened to have a "date" with a lady who was in "First Violins" with a big Symphony Orchestra; when she observed my play list on my iPod, she was incredulous ! " My God man.......where did you get this play list ?" Well, I bought all the music on CD's, then spent about 4 yrs typing up the play list ! After much back & forth, she determined that everyone in the .......................Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra just HAD to have such a play list, with THEIR music, on THEIR iPod. "Can you do it ?" After some study, I determined it would require about 500 years to do all that organizing and typing, and about the same time, my BIG break came when I met Miss Arlie, so I was relieved from this monumental task !
( besides, I'm probably not cut out to be "hooked-up" with a string player; I would do better with a pianist )

Things went just great for a long time, Miss A and I bought "our" iMac, then my power Mac fell victim to "capacitance" from a huge, nearby lightening strike, the HD in the iMac just kept getting "fuller and fuller", and as we were both needing to "compute" at the same time.........I bought her a new Dell laptop; ( no Mac that ! ) It was a great decision.....worked really great; till yet another lightening bolt "zapped" the external modem supplying the satellite signal to the iMac; ( which Dish Networked replaced without cost, as it belonged to them ) But it also got the router; bought another router at Wal-Mart, never got around to hooking it up yet, because..........................Miss A now "had to have" a new Kindle Fire ! ( She reads a lot ) At the time, ( just before Christmas ), I didn't realize it at the time, but the Kindle is just another .......................Tablet ! Just as an iPad is, and just as several dozen more "things" are. Anyway, I bought her Kindle just before Christmas, and so far, she hasn't put it down yet ! So far she has read dozens of books, sent hundreds of emails, kept track of countless friends on "face book", listened to police calls from all over the country, and has been so busy on the Kindle / Tablet, that she hasn't even noticed that the laptop still isn't "online", because no one has yet hooked up the new router !

Another even more pressing question I have always asked myself is...........who has time to watch 150 TV channels, listen to a play list with 90% of the music composed for over 200 yrs, and still have time time to feed 3 dogs, 2 cats, 1 bird, and occasionally look in on the neighbors goat when they're away; not to mention, looking at all the photos on A.net each day, and still keep up with "non-aviation" forum, and keep track on who's leading in the Florida primary on Fox News ?

With all this in mind, do you think you should wait for the "next" iPad, settle for the present iPad, try to "get by" without an "A6 chip", "Siri".........or even LTE (?) Boy ! That's a tough call ! Maybe; just possibly; but you'd probably be seriously "out of date"; can you handle that ? Let us know................

Charley

P.S. I have also become aware that I need an iPad for a specific task; ( carry my portfolio of art to galleries, as I'm also an artist ), ( larger display than Kindle ), but as I don't even need it online, the present model should do fine; ( I'll probably pick one up on Craig's List for a "song" ) ( and I have also concluded that I need to buy a Kindle, as I read a lot too; ( and many of my books are on Amazon ) I can't wait to read my art books in my favorite font, "Hurculanum", at 14 pt., white on black background !

So many decisions to make !

You don't need a kindle if you have an Ipad, just download the free kindle app from the app store and away you go.

To date they've only released the original iPad and iPad 2.

Nothing will be new and innovative on the next one, it will have features that have been technologically possible since the first one came out, but that Apple kept off of the first two models - so that they could create three waves of nationwide purchasing fury and pump up their stock price even further.

I got nothing against Apple for having that kind of savvy; but I do roll my eyes at the folks who camp out for these things...

Thanks, KiwiRob ! ( In Norway !?! ) ( Lol! Only on A.net ! )

You know, I get so damned confused with all this Tablet stuff..........it's not just talking about the hardware, but the connection to the Wi-Fi net work, the 3G, 4G, etc. etc. I have read about each one, where it comes from, and I still get them mixed up.

There are so many things about the Kindle that I find fascinating.......I read a LOT of books; yet, one of my big problems has always been having a good light to read by; no problem there.......thing is lit up,like a sign ! Size of typeface, type of font......you have all these choices ! The thing that REALLY concerns me is........even though Amazon has millions of books, my book preferences are all over the map; 80% of the stuff I like to read, you never even see in a book store; a lot was written "back then".......I have more luck finding stuff I like on Amazon, eBay's other site, "Half.com" (mostly used stuff),
and just here and there. The Kindle has a fabulous display; art work looks great on it, but it's just not quite big enough; iPad is much better there; other than size, the Kindle does everything I need, (and as we already have a portable "hot spot", ( and it's not-so-cheap monthly cost), I don't even have to worry about that; ( I'll need to find if an iPad will work on that ) Other than the display size, the Kindle does everything I need, and save me 300 bucks to boot; 300 less I have to stick into a new machine.

It's not an immediate decision I have to make though; I'm taking my Mac to the "genius bar" for a "look-see", and if I find that it's a big expense to get "back to normal", I'm probably going to buy a new iMac; I really love the thing, even though I'm way behind the curve on OS version.

The annoying thing about kindle is I live in Norway and want to purchase from Amazon.co.uk, but I'm forced to purchase from amazon.com, this annoys me on several fronts, firstly the .co.uk site is a lot cheaper, it has more of the books I want to read and I don't have to put up with annoying US spelling.

I bought an ipad2 right before new year and immediately started reading about the new one. I'm not that concerned about it. I got my iPad as a tool for flying with for flight for charts, Netflix for sitting around, and angry birds for getting the attention of people sitting behind me on a plane. Unless this new one is going to do something that I can't already do in aviation I don't need it.

I've passed already the "mobile-mania" and now I realize that a stationary tower is just about the most damn useful thing out there. Can't beat the value either.

I've never bothered with the "old" Ipads and for darn sure I'm not going to waste any time or money on the "new" Ipad. My only concession to new gadgets was a netbook when airlines started to more briskly enforce carry-on weight limits. I've got absolutely no need to act like any one of thousands of android drones I watch stumbling down the street each day, faces glued to their "dumb phone" as they stumble off the curb and out into traffic. Whether Ipad or Iphone etc, I really don't think anybody "NEEDS" to be wired in and connected every second of the day. For god's sake, get a life in the real world.
I've also got lots of money that my geek friends don't have while they try to keep up with what the marketers tell them are the newest "must-have" toys.

That's a small, non-representative minority among all users. Most simply enjoy using certain devices for their own purposes.

My first iPod was a nano. My first iPhone a 3GS. Only with the iPad I got the first model – and still keep using it.

I replace devices when the new ones offer me substantial improvements in features which really make a difference for my actual needs. Examples:

- iPhone 4S: 64GB capacity for my music library + apps, Retina Display for reading

- iPad 3: if it actually gets a Retina Display for better full-page reading, more RAM for more browser tabs without reloading

I happily skip successive models as long as the one I've got serves my needs well enough, and I'm hardly alone in this relaxed approach.

Not needing any of the available new devices is just as fine, as long as your needs are met by whatever you've got. I agree that blind conumerism is silly and wasteful, but not everyone who enjoys using new things has automatically succumbed to it.

I'm 17 years old, I've grown up with tech. That's the world I have been born into so yes, I do WANT the latest tech and I can argue that I NEED the latest. It's my opinion.

I can understand getting into debate if this was an apple vs android thread, but I simply started it to see who was getting the latest iPad, so don't personally see how your post contributes to this thread.

Times are changing and we are heading toward a time, if we haven't gotten there yet, where you will need to be connected in order to make it in this REAL world. Social media, smart devices...they're all become necessary to survive professionally. I agree with the part about people stumbling around with their face glued to their palm device. That's an unfortunate side effect of this digital age. I won't deny that some people are fanatically obsessed. Apple's cult-like following is very sad. No one needs every new device, but you better keep up or else you'll find yourself a day late and a dollar short.

To answer the question posed by this thread, I might consider getting the new iPad. I have never owned a tablet but recently I have begun looking at the iPad more and more. I wouldn't get it because I think I need it. I'd get one because I find them to be very convenient.

LOL. I've been in high-tech since the 80s and it was true then as it is now. Our "social media" back then was USENET, and it's still out there if you want it. Every university and company I've been with has had internal e-mail and gateways to public e-mail. I was an IBM employee in the 80s, and our internal network was bigger than the Internet, and our "social media" was FORUMS. ARPANET dates back to 1969 and the use of TCP/IP dates back to 1982.

I haven't seen a paper memo worth reading since the mid 80s. If you needed live messaging, you were given a pager.

I have both, along with the Kindle app on my iPad, and there is certainly a reason to get them. I can put a Kindle in my pocket (not a Fire) while the iPad, the battery lasts a month and reading on a Kindle is no comparison to reading on an iPad, without the Retina display my eyes hurt after a while. I also like the fact when I carry my Kindle I don't feel like I'm walking around with an expensive piece of technology, its just a Kindle.

I'm really hoping that one day in the near future Amazon will provide a true rival to Apple. They seem to have the philosophy to get there where others (everyone else) has failed to dent Apple's dominance. I find it interesting that they'll both up being almost direct competitors in much of what they do yet will have gotten there in complete different ways. We as consumers need choice. I have plenty of Apple products but it makes me cringe everytime I give them money that I'd rather be giving it to someone else but no one else is able to bring anything to the table to compete, although Asus is certainly giving them a run for their money on the computer side of things with the small laptops and their all in ones.

Right. The point I was making is that there is a growing emphasis on real-time 24/7. Waiting until you can get in front of a computer a few times a day doesn't cut it anymore. So many people need that access in the palm of their hand wherever they go.

Because I just thought I would start a thread to see on who has been holding off or who plans on getting one if the specs are worth it. If you had nothing to input to this, by bother posting? This isn't validating any stereotype, I was merely asking a question.

Although I don't post particularly much, (I've been around for a few years) this website is getting worse and worse for people looking to cause an argument or by posting something that contributes in no way what so ever.

I don't think that attitude helps much, though. It's a thread on a public forum. People have the right to write down their views on the subject. You're free to write down your thoughts on a piece of paper and no one will attack them. However, this is a public forum, and you'll have people with dissenting opinions post their opinion. Don't take it personally and don't encroach on another's views if you don't want the same thing to happen to you!

iPads, iPods.... I lost track. I'm not that big a fan of technology. I like Apple, I got a MacBookPro. I just don't see the point of getting so many devices. I'm really against consumerism but I got a Mac because I got tired of Windows breaking every six months even without visits to porn sites.

I don't see the advantage of an iPod to any other MP3 player (or whatever format is popular nowadays). I don't see an advantage of watching movies on an iPad vs on a laptop (or better yet, a TV screen). I don't see an advantage of a kindle or a similar device except its portability.

I certainly grew up as did technology but I feel no connection there. I will never go entirely without technology but the number of devices rising exponentially isn't helping anyone. I see people on the street look like total "intellectuals" staring at a screen and stopping when hearing footsteps rather than looking up to avoid the obstacle... Wonder how they don't run into trees more often. I'm not saying technology is bad or that anyone who wants to be tech-savvy should go without the latest iPad or centiPad. I'm just saying, what's the big deal?
