I wouldn't mind, but we are not talking about some random provincial town, it's the capital city! You would think they might at least put London in the right place.
Also, why on earth point out Cornwall as the only other point of reference on a map supposedly connected with a story about the tabloid phone-hacking scandal?? Bizarre.
Before anyone gets offended, this is not intended as US-bashing. Such geographical idiocy and sloppy journalism irks me wherever it is encountered.

I see this all the time in the news.
They often don't get their facts straight, give biased news and can never accurately predict the weather so I'm not surprised that they're geography is inaccurate as well.

When I first read the thread title I thought Norfolk, Virginia and thought that is way far off, but after clicking on the link I could tell at first glance that London is not where they show it, it is to the south west of the location they show.
There are far to many students graduating High School and College nowadays that have now clue where places and countries are at on a map because I do not think they teach geography any more.

I live in Norfolk, and it would be very nice for our city to run the country. Though I don't think many fellow residents of Norwich would like to rename our city London

I never forget my 2nd. grade teacher telling the class that Connecticut bordered New Jersey.
I kept telling the class that New York cuts through the middle of those two states and that is where New York City is located. She and the rest of the class thought I was trying to show off but didn't know what I was talking about but I was clearly in the right.
This was back in early 1981.
I don't think its ever been taught in schools.
Another thing that bugs me is when people describe a city as a region of a country.
I used to hear some people in SFO say "I hate the South but New Orleans is the only part of the South I like".
New Orleans is a city, not a region. The Bayou, the Blue Ridge Mountains or Appalachia would be considered a region.

It's not the first time CNN make a geography mistake:
Here they put Toulouse in the middle of the Alps, Paris somewhere near Reims, Rennes somewhere near Le Mans, Lyon is close to Limoges, Cannes is where Montpellier stands. Only Lille seems to be where it should be.
Here, the city of Cannes is in Gijon, Spain.
Here they put Switzerland in Czech Republic.
Here Queensland is in Tasmania.
I'm sure there are more!

Ohh I thought you meant Norfolk, VA too. I guess that's not too far off, if that flashed on the screen I don't think I would've noticed it wasn't on London. Airline route maps are notorious for misplacing cities!

Indeed. And, as I said in the opening post, in a story about the phone-hacking scandal you choose London and.........CORNWALL as the only two points of reference??????? Bizarre.

Yeah, only 100+ miles....
Well 1: not that far off compared to Norfolk, VA
2: only a few inches or centimeters off on the map they showed.
All you'd need is a guy to have a brain fart and not think twice about where he is putting the dot and there you go
In the last 11 years, you only found 4 instances of CNN messing up a map?
People make mistakes. Smart people makes mistakes. Remember the Mars probe that was designed using metric measurements and built using imperial? Oops. I wonder how many battles were lost simply because a commanding officer made a mistake. People make mistakes. It's life.
If you're the exception to the rule, I'd love to fly you out here and meet you... and also quiz you on a plethora of stuff and ask you for advice on what events to bet on, since you're never wrong.
Kidding aside, you'd expect better from CNN - but you'd also expect better from people such as airline mechanics who put peoples' lives on the line daily. In the end, it is not a big deal that CNN messed something up. They push some of these stories out so quickly that they are still editing the content when the first bit of the story begins to air. If this so seriously affects your life that you are losing sleep over it, you should seek qualified professional help.
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

What's that got to do with it?
They were trying to plot London, they just 'happened' to plot it in Norfolk, UK.
Well I said:
Quoting DeltaMD90 (Reply 8): Ohh I thought you meant Norfolk, VA too. I guess that's not too far off
So yeah, compared to Norfolk VA (which I thought of when I read the title) mistaking it for Norfolk, UK "is not that bad" comparatively
Quoting RussianJet (Reply 14): Quoting DeltaMD90 (Reply 11):

Alternatively, majorly far off in terms of the size of the UK, and the fact that it is the capital city we are talking about.
Yes, but when you have a random American at CNN plotting where London is on the map, I can easily see where a mistake was made

That's the ones I had in mind, I don't really have the time to do an extensive search...
Quoting ALTF4 (Reply 12): People make mistakes. Smart people makes mistakes
Yes they do, me included. However, how long does it take to do a search on Google maps? 10 seconds? Was it difficult to double-check before putting the map live?
Quoting ALTF4 (Reply 12): In the end, it is not a big deal that CNN messed something up
No it's not. It's not like we're talking about a godforsaken village in the middle of the Gobi desert. It's only the capital city of one of the major countries in this world

There have been times, in my mind, I'm 100% sure of something and don't even think twice about it... only to have a brain fart and am wrong. I can see it easily happening, that person knows where London is 100% (in his mind) but is subconsciously thinking of Norfolk or whatever and places it there. I'm pretty sure the person wasn't if-fy about it, was "pretty sure" London was there, and placed it there. I think it was more of a "d'oh!" moment than a "oh yeah probably should've googled it" moment

I like how they also point out:

There's even a little river that leads to it that you can see on the map....

I know! I mean how can you do that! Or how could TF1 have mixed up Sweden and Finland (and this was with 10 seconds of googling, I could find more I am sure) .
Quote: French television gives viewers a geography lesson by mixing up Sweden and Finland on a map of Europe during a prime time news report.
After a geographical faux pas less than a fortnight ago when it mixed up Wallonia and Flanders during a prime time news broadcast during a report on Belgium, France's main private television channel TF1 has "gone one better".
This time around though it moved the map, so-to-speak, of Scandinavia by placing a whole country - Sweden - a little further to the East - in place of neighbouring Finland to be exact.

And you assume that because there is a French flag on my profile, I watch this channel? Or you assume I live in France too?
Quoting tugger (Reply 20): These kinds of errors happen to everyone everywhere.
I totally agree! That's what I said above. But these geographic mistakes happen too many times on CNN to my taste. A bit more efforts please
