Yesterday, as an experiment, I posted a random picture on Facebook mocking Italy and its unpreparedness to snow. For a change, I made the picture accessible to everyone, instead of friends only (it's not something private after all).
Now, 24 hours later, the photo has gathered 462 "likes" and was shared by 444 other people. First it started out slow, then someone who knew someone shared it, and it kept increasing.
This is really interesting, it has never happened to me before. I believe that's the strength of social networks, if used properly! This was just a purely random coincidence. It would be nice to be able to make this happen on purpose!
Are there any communication experts around here who can comment on this? Are there any studies being done on this phenomenon?

Assuming you have 200 friends, that's not a lot. Even if only 100 of your friends liked it/shared it, and 50 of each of their friends again liked it and shared it, you'd be up to 5K likes/shares.
