Foods You Used To Hate But Now Like/love

I was a picky eater as a kid and was never big on trying new things. Until the age of 6 or 7 the only thing I would order in a restaurant was grill cheese sandwiches, Then from 7 till my early teens it was a cheeseburger. It was a challenge for my parents to convince me to eat Chinese food as a kid (and we are talking about the deep fried slathered in sugary sauce stuff here). I suppose it didn't really help that my mom can't really cook.


Sweet potatoes -- I love then now, usually prefer them baked, though every now and then we make them mashed. Hated them as a kid, probably because in my house they came from a can.

Asparagus -- Not sure if my parents even foisted them on me, but steamed or roasted they taste great and go with pretty much anything. Only downside is that it makes your pee stink.

Beans -- Baked, black, pinto, refried, garbanzo, you name it and I wouldn't eat it as a kid. Now it is a staple that is almost always in our pantry.


There are a few items I am still cagey on, namely fish. But probably due to the fact that availability of good fresh fish in the desert is tricky and I don't know how to prepare it.

Dark Chocolate - Used to hate it with a passion but now milk chocolate is too sweet while dark chocolate has a much better flavor profile to me.

Whole Wheat Bread - Hated it as a kid but a staple to me now.

Liver...wouldnt eat it when I was younger. About 6 months ago I mistook it for steak at a Brazilian rodizio. Took a bite...realized it wasnt that bad. Kept on eating it.

As a child I detested mushrooms and cheese. Now I'll quite happily eat mushrooms, but I adore cheese, all different varieties excepting the sharpest blue-veined cheese.

I don't smoke, I drink moderately, I regularly go to the gym: I hope I lead a relatively healthy lifestyle. However, cheese will eventually be my downfall. I'll probably die of clogged arteries.

I absolutely hated fish growing up but at age 23, I took a risk and ate sushi and loved it. Then I worked my way in to eating cooked fish.

Interesting! I've always hated grilled cheese sandwiches. They are still hurl inducing even as I head toward senior adulthood. Interestingly from when I could swallow till I was 8 or 9 I always ate hamburgers with french fries and coke. I am one of the extreme minority of folks who don't like cheese on my burgers with the exception of when I have a "pizza burger." I hated green veggies as a kid. It wasn't until I went to college that I started developing a taste for broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus and Brussels sprouts. I also now like green beans. The reason why I loathed green veggies as a kid was because my mom only served up the puke worthy canned versions. Remember this was the 1960's and canned veggies were overladen with salt and were soggy and limp. And matters were not helped with my mom shouting at 707 decibels to you better eat all those f*****g vegetables! If you watch John Waters movies Pink Flamingos and Female trouble starring "Divine" you got an idea about big momma's MO in child rearing. However, she loved us immensely and would do anything for me and my sister. Sadly the old gal is in a nursing home with advanced Alzheimer's.


Another food I hated was Feta (Goat Cheese) now, no Greek Salad is complete without some sprinkled on the greens. Also add olives to my hate it as a kid but love them now. I'll come up with more foods when I think of them.

When I lived in San Francisco it took all I had to NOT buy those cheese&grape snack plates at Bristol Farms in Westfield Centre - grapes, walnuts, sure...but a pile of cubes of orange cheddar and a pile of cubes of smoked Gouda....aaaaargh. Now I don't live in San Francisco anymore. I live in Minneapolis, home to Davanni's and their irresistible deep dish pizza...   

In the child-you-better-eat-your-veggies vein, I remember always being on fairly good terms with green beans and broccoli; but cauliflower was an absolute no-go and Brussels sprouts were an absoluter noer-go. However - again with the San Francisco - at pasta pomodoro (which now also has locations in Southern California and Arizona; but I ate there when it was just one tiny cramped little shoppy on Chestnut Street in Cow Hollow; yes I am prophetic and special) you can get a delicious little side dish of Brussels sprouts which are sautéed and served (and flavored) with diced lemon rind.   

I have also made peace with Cauliflower.

Still no peace for peas. Puh-lease.

If you ever fly into MDW it's worth a quick detour to Giordano's pizza. Their meatball/meat sauce pizza is to die for.

As a child, I had no problem with vegetables. I loved my veggies and raw carrots were and still are my favorites.

Argh...so irresistable. Some of my football team would go out to Davanni's and chow down on several of those. Some of the better pizza in the Twin Cities. The other place I recommend is in St. Paul. It has a pretentious Italian name, but it escapes me. Very very good pizza.

Menudo: It´s the cow´s stomach cooked as a soup with red chiles, hominy, sliced radish and cabbage. I hated the thing growing up but know it´s my breakfast for special holidays and I love it.

Pork´s feet. Hated them. Now I love them in vinegar with tortilla chips and dollops of sour cream.

And that´s it. Food in general has been my passion since I remember. I was never a picky kid except for a shellfish allergy that disappeared in my teens.

Sushi. I tried it for the first time in high school and wanted nothing to do with it. Fast forward just a few years and now I have it at every opportunity.

I've always loved cheese but as child I just had no taste for Brie and Swiss. Now they are the two I eat the most!

You and me both. Because of my dad's health issues he eats peas just about everyday and I find it nauseating. Snow peas I can deal with if prepared properly, while pea soup I'm totally fine with. But peas in their original form disgust me.

When I was in middle school, I would go with my friend and his family to Vietnamese restaurants where they introduced me to Pho. Back then I just didn't get it. I could barely stomach an entire bowl but I would try my hardest in the interest of being polite.

I didn't eat Pho for 10+ years after those first few experiences. Then about two years ago I was walking through a local strip mall and discovered a Vietnamese restaurant. I got one good whiff and immediately I was craving Pho! WTF?! So I went there with my girlfriend and I have been hooked ever since. I eat it at least once a week now.

I never liked baked beans until I went to university, and at 9p per can (and counting as one of your 5 a day fruit and veg portions) I had to try them. Not bad at all, on toast or baekd potato, especially with cheese on.

I also never liked cheesecake, until recently when someone brought one into work and I thought "what the heck, I'll give it another try". Very tasty it was too! Still sounds weird to have cheese in a cake though!

My parents didn't really do the canned veggie thing in my house, by then it was largely all frozen stuff. But usually still overcooked, mushy and largely tasteless. Come to think of it I have a lot of frozen veg in the freezer too, but it seems like it hardly gets used since we usually have something fresh that can be quickly cooked up to go with dinner. Plain steamed broccoli is a regular, while not the most exciting thing in the world I really like. Frankly having access to quality fresh produce year round, at reasonable prices, makes such a huge difference. And knowing how to cook helps too.

If I could get fresh peas I would love that. But unless you grow them yourself or have a really good farmer's market nearby I don't know where to find them. Trader Joe's has really good frozen peas, cook them right and they are a great addition to dinner.

And those little black lumps of mushiness did a lot to make me detest those fungi. I remember eating at a Japanese restaurant and the chef cooked shitayke mushrooms in butter.... boy were those good. And it doesn't even need to be fancy mushrooms, plain white button mushrooms sliced up on a salad is really tasty.

Likewise. As a kid, I thought dark chocolate was too bitter, and I didn't see the point in having a chocolate that wasn't sickly sweet. Chocolate is meant to be a dessert.

But later on as an adult, I became addicted to Lindt 70%, and now I'm regularly buying Valrhona 70% Guanaja chocolates. They are absolutely fantastic - not too sweet, and a very pleasant chocolate flavour. Milk chocolate and white chocolate is just too sweet for my tastes now.
