Since late November, I've had some form of cold, sinus infection and allergies. I am in generally good shape, exercise drink plenty of water get at least 7 hours sleep each night. I've been in and out of the doctor office. I've been on the Medrol Dose (anti-inflammatory) and anti biotic merry go round. My symptoms go away but then they return. I even use a Netti Pot at least once a day. Now, I have swollen tonsils and am planning on going to the doctor tomorrow (Wednesday). I take Benadryl and Musinex. Anyone else experience this? A long lasting upper respiratory infection of some form. Interestingly enough a lot of people who work at BWI seem to be going through similar ailments. Maybe not lasting as ongoing as mine. I researched nasal and sinus cancer. They are quite rare. The only factor that puts me in any risk factor is I'm male and over 45. I don't smoke, am not around smokers and have never smoked. Any ideas?

An interesting new web site that may be of interest regarding this topic:

First of all, see your primary doctor or a specialist to rule out any serious problems.

Do consider using saline solution sprays, 'neti pots' or a special squeeze bottle using salt/baking soda in water solution. They can help flush out allergens, dust, dirt, other irritants that cause nasal pain, congestion, reduce some simple infections and nasal drip. You can find such products in any drug store shelf. Use them 2 times a day and it might help reduce your symptoms for a pretty cheap price and without the financial or health side affects of OTC or prescription drugs. I have sleep apnea and my doctor recommended such products to help with sinus problems that limited my ability to use my CPAP machine.

Excellent advice! Been there done all of that. I use the pot twice daily and use saline. I've been to my ENT and plan to see my primary. I had sinus surgery back in 1993. I too have sleep apnea and use a CPAP. I clean the humidifier reservoir and mask daily and once a week flush out the hose and take apart my mask for cleaning. I also change it's filter weekly. I have two cats and hope I have NOT developed an allergy to them. I do not think it's that. I'm hoping I'm not one of those rare cases of sinus/nasal cancer. As mentioned I've been on the anti biotic merry go round.

I have been experiencing the same thing since early November. I sat on my sinus infection and waited until it was really bad to see student health services. First time around he gave me sudafed and something else (antibacterial?). The infection didn't go away and got considerably worse. I went back and was prescribed Levaquin (appareantly a nasty drug ie powerful).

I frequently use saline rinses, but need to be careful on which OTC medication I use since I'm in flight school.

My sinuses have been on and off since mid December. Went to an ENT before Christmas and didn't show any signs of infection, but they wanted to X-ray my sinuses. Decided to hold off, and now I'm getting another one. Driving 5 hours back to St. Paul this weekend to visit the ENT for an X-ray to see if I need more drastic treatment.

Sinus infections are no joke, and they're pretty debilitating. I hope you get better!

So we beat on against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

That happens to me every time I get a cold - luckily it happens very rarely (and when it happens I recover really fast - have not had a sick day from school or work since I was 10), but when it does happen I can be coughing (a dry cough) for a month or more. Every time I go to the doctor they seem to prescribe some different combinantion of anti-inflamattories, steroids, etc. but with no success (one of them even made me spend a ton of money on asthma inhaler that did nothing - it wasn't asthma). Most doctors seem to think it is some kind of allergy but have done the scratch tests and blood work multiple times and nothing shows up (and I mean nothing, not even the control market - my family is weird like that). Best I can tell it is some sort of chronic bronchitis. The best thing to do is just to try not to catch colds (and get a flu shot even if you are not in a risk group).

If you are not afraid of a little cold water and live by the sea nothing clears sinuses like a few dunks into saltwater, in particular if you do a few tumbles while NOT breathing out of your nose (to let the saltwater in). I have throught at times to build a covered seawater swimming pool in a city to be used in winter for therapeutical purposes (if you don't mind swimming in a bit of other people's snot, and I mean, who does?).

Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Thank you and have a safe trip. I hope you partake of Davanni's. I'm now looking at their web site and salivating. Last summer I took a quick trip to MDW so I could eat at Giordanno's and was quite pleased. Their deep dish meatsauce/meatball pie was to die for! I've had sinus x-rays and they found nothing but you should get it done to rule out any complications. I hope being around aircraft isn't a factor contributing to our afflictions. You too feel better.

As I mentioned and you commented on it on one of your threads, I had the flu back in mid October and it put me to bed for two weeks, plus two more weeks of recuperating to be at my usual 100%. An entire month of wasted time. So yes, I believe cold and flu viruses are getting stronger. I am a diabetic, though, so that may have played a part.

In any case, what you describe is not the norm. Without meaning to offend you, have you considered it might be phsycosomatic? How much stress do you have in your life? And I could post much more questions similar to that last one but it´s not what you need and I don´t want to appear as a patronizing doctor wannabe. I hope you got the idea.

Stress can give you all sorts of strange stuff. My ex got Conversion Syndrome and spent half a year in a wheel chair, without a single physical anomaly. Spent thousands in Neurologists and Physical Therapists. None ever found anything physically wrong with her.

The reason? A bad break up with the prior ex. Who was a married guy, to boot. Don´t understimate stress.

There are several things that could be going on.. one is a bacterial infection.. it may be at the point they have to poke holes in your sinuses to give an alternate drain path.. it's not bad lots of spirits of cocaine and then they drive a 16 penny nail in. (well that's what it looks like.

The second is fungal infection.. these are nasty.

If you go untreated, both will erode the bone all between the sinus and the brain.. then there is little to do but update your will.
See a nose and throat specialist. most general practitioners will miss the fungal and just pump antibiotics into you..

I bet you got in in February. At least here in the East February features weather extremes up and down.

Thank you, but got you covered on these fronts. When I see my ENT I always ask about fungal funk. They swear that is not my problem. I've had the sinus surgery and they always check the results when I'm in for an appointment.
As mentioned earlier I feel there could be something at the airport. Many others (co-workers) from all the airlines and even vendors have had or are currently going through the same thing. Some even more severe. The good news, my sore throat which they deemed as a virus is already gone. I now just have the pesky allergy symptoms. I do have two cats and yes this could be a major factor but, I love them too much to even think of giving them away. If putting up with these inconveniences is what it is than so be it.

It's probably not the airplanes, but it probably IS the people who fly on them. Lots of people still fly when they are sick. They don't care about anyone else. Just get me to my destination is all they care about. So if you are a CS agent, this may be what has gotten to you. And you could be getting hit with the same viral strains over and o

I have found that by washing my hands frequently and not touching my face before washing my handsl, I have less cold symptoms in a year.

Agreed! Also I feel the state does a mediocre at best job maintaining our airport. Many times the cleaners and contractors use strong chemicals and the HVAC can be sketchy in many areas this adds to the factor. I've also learned NOT to grab hold of escalator and moving sidewalk railings they are petri dishes of funky stuff.

Good move. When I go grocery shopping, I come in the house and wash my hands before even unloading the groceries. Those grocery cart handles are just gross. Some women load their hands up with hand lotion before using them and when you grab a cart they have used it's like holding on to a grease stick. Grocery stores also have those wipes you can use on the handles, but the dispensers are always empty.
And it also helps to go grocery shopping at off peak times. Especially when kids are not going to be with their parents. Kids pass around all kinds of stuff.
