New BMW M6 Unveiled

BMW has unveiled the new (F12) M6, both the Coupé as well as the convertible:

A few specs:

Twin Turbo V8
560 HP
680 NM from 1,500rpm onwards
0-100km/h: 4,2 sec (Coupe); 4,3 sec (Cabrio)
Top Speed: 250km/h limited, can be increased to 305 km/h (still limited )
7-Speed-Dual-Clutch Transmission (US will get a manual, too)
Carbon Fibre roof (Coupe)

One thing I never understood about BMW is that they never use sporty metallic pedals. They always use the same bland pedals all across the board. I remember reading the justification somewhere and it was quite laughable.

Can't make my mind up on the looks. It's better than the last generation for sure.

The last 6-series was certainly striking, but not particularly a pretty car. This one takes care of that.

Because their engineers work for Ford. When has Ford produced anything inspiring in the past 10 years?

As to the BMW, looks strikingly like a 3 series in the back with a 5 series front end. Maybe it will look more "substantial" in real life. Not bad looking, just would have liked to see something a touch more extreme rather than a rehash of other models in one car.

Interior is stunning.

Excuse me? I'm not a Ford fan, really, but how can you say that?

What about the Focus RS? Arguably the best hot-hatch to come out of the automotive world in the last decade.

What about their pickup trucks? Maybe not pretty in the traditional sense, but the SVT Raptor is quite the machine.

The new 2013 Fusion looks spectacularly sexy (very Aston-like!).

What about the GT? A re-make of an old classic, yes, but what gorgeous lines. Sex on wheels, that thing is.

Mustang Shelby GT500? That thing will embarass most other cars on the road, especially if you keep it to competing with others cars in its price bracket.

Me thinks that this center console, in fact, entire cabin might be based on the 8-series of the 90's

There are a lot of similarities in basic outline and design, including the offset slightly angled toward the driver center console. My dad had the 8 back in the 90's and he always remarked that he felt like he was in cockpit of a fighter jet.

Really? Ford's quality is seriously lacking. The question was, "Why can't Lincoln produce something this great?" Ford has never produced anything near the quality of todays current BMW standards, at least in the past 20 years. The only car that would have this much horse power alone would be some high end version of a Mustang, but the interior would be standard Ford and plastic-y. Lincoln improves the look a bit, but they are still Ford parts, and for the most part, Lincoln produces 4-door products all based on existing Ford frames, including the Rich American Grandpa-mobile, the Lincoln Town Car, which is a glorified Crown Vic with some extra silver trimming, wood, and a few more skins of leather.

Also, I'd hardly call a hatchback inspiring machinery. Functional yes, practical yes, but not sexy, sporty (in the sense that the 6-series is sporty), or powerful.

That orange M6 coupe is gorgeous. The convertible is nice too, but I live in a desert with 300 plus days of sunshine (which sometimes includes sunny 115 degree days), so I don't think I need a convertible.

You said they haven't produced anything inspiring. That's just plain wrong. The Ford ST/RS triggered a whole bunch of front-wheel drive, super powerful hot hatches in the world (Dodge Caliber SRT4, Mazdaspeed3, RenaultSport Clio, RenaultSport Megane, just to name a few) that have now tried to sieze a piece of the market that used to be owned exclusively by the Volkswagen GTI. That's the very definition of inspiring. You said the RS isn't sporty or powerful. It has 305HP, a 6-sp manual (which the 6-series doesn't offer), great sport seats, nicely tuned suspension. It handles better than most cars out there, regardless of which wheels are being powered. Lap times and reviews can all attest to that. It doesn't have all the annoying electronic nannies most other cars have these days, so it lets the driver control the car the way he/she wants to. I've driven the RS and many more powerful "sports" cars (Corvette, M3, etc) and the RS was honestly more fun than any other one of those, by a wide margin.

The SVT Lightning trucks triggered a whole bunch of copy-cat high-power trucks (Dodge SRT, for example). Again, the definition of inspiring.

I mentioned nothing about Ford quality in my post. I will gladly acknowledge that their build quality in the USA is atrocious. That's why I'm not a Ford fan. But the cars they build and deliver in Europe are astronomically good. It's been consistently rated the best manufacturer in Europe, and its reliability reviews are among the best over there. The interior materials leave a lot to be desired regardless of where you're buying the car, but that's the essence of a cheaper manufacturer. You can't compare Ford to BMW or Ferrari in terms of build quality. It's just not the same market.

Well, internet reports are that only the US is getting the manual transmission due to unique demand. It was months ago that I last read that, so forgive me if it has changed. Nevertheless, I'd expect more than 10% imported will be a conventional manual (and I can't imagine them reselling for less than the sequential gearbox).

No it didn't the power war with front wheel drive hatches really started with the VR6 Golf way way back in the early 90's, it's been steadily ramping up since then, the Focus RS500 is merely the current pinnacle. Prior to the VR6 Golf most hot hatches had anywhere from 120hp to 145hp.

I've also taken your comments to the masses (so to speak - asked a couple of friends) to see if the general opinion is the same as yours or mine. (It was not intended originally to be a "Ha! See? I told you so!" result, but it turned out that way. Please know I am not saying your opinion is stupid or anything like that. Just elaborating mine and demonstrating that your comments were rather generalized).

I'm getting comments like:
"The Mustang is a great throw-back to the original car. Dodge and Chevrolet showed us exactly how not to do that, and while Mustang's attempt at the Thunderbird fell short, the new Pony cars are great, great tributes."

"Well, some of their cars have been hideous until the new dynamic design language. Now they're coming around. But the most inspiring thing Ford has done recently is its Ecoboost technology. Not particularly glamorous, but it's giving larger cars better gas mileage and drawing tons of customers."

"The RS is the ultimate hot-hatch. I wish they brought it here. It'd inspire me to buy one!"

You're forgetting probably the most important of them all, the Lancia Delta.

The first Integrale was giving 185hp back in 1987. They grew to 200, 210 and 215 in the following years.

Somewhere I saw that even Ferrari only sells about 10% of their cars with manuals, and I can't imagine that a BMW that is further towards the GT side of the spectrum will do better. They may hold value due to relative rarity, but I bet dealers might be wary of leasing new M6s with stick shifts.

Dual-Clutch Gearboxes are very good though. I'd never go for a tradional automatic in a sporty car, but I'd be very willing to consider a Dual-Clutch setup.
