Picked up the new iPad this morning. I'm not an Apple groupie, so I am loathe to camp out or wait in line. But it was on my way to work, and I knew I wanted it, so I decided to go get it.

Got there about 5 minutes after the store opened. Line. Damn! But, the line took about 10 minutes. 15 minutes later, I was out the door and on my way to work with a new 32GB 4G iPad.

First thoughts - they weren't kidding about the display. It's freakin' sweet! VERY colorful, and extremely sharp. Compared to my existing original iPad, it blows it away.

Second, it's fast. Really fast. I hate waiting for my computers to calculate, and so far with tasks that I expect to wait on, I have had a noticeable shortening of that wait. Quad core is nifty.

Third, the 4G LTE (AT&T network) is also a joy. It loads a full web page faster than 802.11 here at work. (But I'm not sure that it's 11g or 11n. I suspect it's g.)

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it so far. I'm pretty annoyed that I had to pay an extra $100 for 16GB extra of RAM, and I'm sure the Android fanbois will jump in about that. But other than that, it's a very slick purchase.

I ordered one too.

Unfortunately, UPS didn't deliver it in time today, as it's still stuck in Milan (Italy). They don't deliver on week-ends, and Monday is a public holiday here. Then, I'll be away for work Tuesday to Thursday. This means I'll have to re-schedule delivery and will only get it next Friday - that's an entire week from now! Bummer...

I'll have to wait patiently and read reviews in the meantime.

So apart from improved user interface and processing speed...is there any sort of new software or functionality with the new build?

I haven't gotten my hands on it but this is what I've heard as well. This would be one of the big selling points to me.

Wasn't it announced some time ago that pricing on the model would be in line with the previous iPad release?

I haven't played around with the camera any, so no facetime or photobooth stuff for me yet. But that's not really the stuff I use the iPad for. For me, it's mostly a work and study tool. (Learning Japanese.)

My main complaint about the original iPad was that it was a little underpowered for my uses. PDFs load and render slow. Not so anymore.

Also, 3G was not a selling point for me. Wifi is still much faster. Now with 4G, I know I can use the web like I do at home when I'm on the road.

Yes, but back 2 years ago when this pricing structure was set, 16GB of flash memory did actually cost a handful. Now it's around $8-10. The old pricing structure does not reflect this reality.

I would like to get it at some stage, but I had hoped more for a software upgrade. The current interface is getting a little boring I think.. I would like the ipad to be like the 'Dashboard' function in OSX. A little like what you can do in Android with widgets, but a little less geeky.

Whereas for me, the Dashboard is one of the worst things about OS X.

Widgets just look fancy, but they are not actually useful. In fact, they are detrimental, chewing away battery life.

As for software updates, don't expect a new hardware product to trumpet new software. Apple introduces new software (fairly unceremoniously) all the time. Like, did you get OS 5.1 last week? If so, you just extended your battery life.

I would disagree completely. Depends a lot on how it is integrated in the OS. in WP7, it is integrated extremely well, and I much prefer this to the iOS. You get a lot of info at glance at your home screen.

I may get a W8 tablet instead when they arrive. My girlfriend is going for the new iPad though.

Do you mind my asking what data package and price-point you selected with AT&T? I love the idea of a 4G/LTE iPad but don't quite know if I can justify the added monthly expense of a data plan to accompany it, particularly since most of my use would be within range of free WiFi signals.

The data is done monthly, without a contract. So if you think there's enough chance you might use it, might as well get the 4G and the first month of data.

I'd spring for the 4G one. It's a month to month charge, so you can start/stop as you need. If you're not locked in to ATT, I'd consider the Verizon one, since you can tether the iPad data connection, and the Verizon 4G network is a lot more robust. ATT is only in a handful of cities (PHX, San Francisco, LA, NY etc).

I need to figure out how to transfer my unlimited 3G iPad data to the new one. Anyone done that yet? That's the only reason I'm sticking with ATT.

To each his own, of course, but I thought the difference between the original and the new iPad was enough to upgrade. I think the new one is at least 4 times faster than the original one. For business purposes (my primary usage), this is a very dramatic difference.

My first impressions:

The screen resolution finally is – in speaking with Rolls Royce (famously about their cars' horsepower) – sufficient.

Not that that really did it justice. Simply imagine a piece of illuminated high-grade print, just with fluid animation and video capability. It looks and feels like something out of a science fiction movie from the far future, or an alien information terminal accidentally left on earth. Just real, and here and now. Fun!

For me personally, reading is what's most improved by the Retina Display, and given the just-adequate resolution of the previous models, I am extremely relieved. I've been using the iPad 1 as a document container and web reader already, but the pixelation was annoying. Now it's just as if printed out in high quality. Excellent!

I've not checked out mobile data yet, but since regular 3G is usually sufficient for my needs already, I don't worry about its more advanced speed yet (up to 42Mb/s in Germany, but requiring more expensive plans for that).

I had stayed on my iPad 1 when the iPad 2 came out, but the 2's much-improved speed is also there, plus another doubling of RAM capacity again, which also goes to speed for the most part. Very nice!

The speed lets it get warm a bit, though, which was completely absent in the first version. Not hot though, even after some extensive gaming. So effectively the aluminium just doesn't feel as cool as it would be otherwise. Not a problem, given the massive performance increase required to drive the screen with four times the pixels at effectively the same graphics performance as before.

And since the iPad 1 had been much thicker and quite a bit heavier than the iPad 2, it's still a net improvement for me, even though the iPad 3(rd generation) has grown slightly in both dimensions again.

The Smart Cover is neat! Playful, but also clever bit of engineering!

Charging time is actually not as long as I had feared – from about 40% to 95% in about 2-3 hours is quite good, considering the 70% larger battery still with the same charger. Could be a not-yet-calibrated battery meter, though. It's been my first recharging so far; Battery life looks to be very long, as it had been with the previous models.

I certainly agree that few people really need to get the new iPad, but the jump in capablities from the iPad 1 is quite dramatic in my experience and for my particular needs (it wasn't quite there for me with the iPad 2), so I'm quite satisfied.

In my view this is a fantastic reading device, a capable computer in various respects and an immensely fun toy.

Anyone fancy explaining the advantage of an i-Pad over a normal laptop?

A laptop more or less forces you to sit upright, place it somewhere and fold up the screen. It also only has a landscape-oriented screen (except for MacBooks, all laptops even have letterbox-like 16:9 displays). And you can't touch content directly, but you have to steer a pointer to the desired location to then perform an operation there which is quite a bit more tedious for many things.

The iPad is effectively like a notepad or a rigid magazine and can be read or watched in exactly the same ways and situations. It is much less obtrusive or intrusive. You can even put it flat on a table so that everyone around can look at pictures, maps or other documents, or play games together.

The new iPad has an extremely high-resolution display which makes it look like a high-quality printed page. It actually doesn't feel like a computer screen any more. It's really astonishing at first, but you quickly get used to it and from then on you just look at the content since the screen is no longer a pixelated layer on top through which you're looking at it (which is particularly obvious by comparison to its predecessors). The high resolution is primarily evident with text, which is readable right down to extra-fine-print size if your eyes are really good but regular-size text just becomes a lot sharper and more pleasant to read than on any lower-resolution display.

When you're using the iPad, you don't erect a wall between yourself and the person in front of you. It's much less intrusive. And it is much more quickly pulled out and stowed again, like a magazine. You can use it everywhere with ease where you could read a magazine or use a writing pad, including in bed, on your couch or on a train.

The iPad has a 4:3 display which is perfect for mixed landscape and portrait use – it is again much closer to the format of a printed magazine or a writing pad than to that of a TV, and from my own experience I fully agree with that design decision.

The biggest difference while using it is that you directly touch the content. You don't have the mouse pointer abstraction in between any more. It's much more direct, quicker and easier for browsing the web and for many other activities. Editing text is a bit strange at first due to the touch-based selection operation, but typing on the full-size landscape keyboard is actually very fast with a little practice.

It's also a mobile TV, a video and music player and a very nice gaming console, depending on which kinds of games you like (there are lots, of pretty much any kind).

In wrapping up, it is a very different kind of beast than a laptop. It can do pretty much everything most people use their laptops for, but it can't do various things some people use theirs for. On the other hand, it can do things no laptop can do that easily. It's also very light, compact and easy to hold.

Whether it's worth it for you can't be answered in general. You would need to just have a closer look at it, exploring its capabilities and looking at the way it works.

Quoting chrisair (Reply 13):

I personally have an add-on card to my iPhone plan which provides a flatrate for a day for €2.95 only when I activate it. It doesn't cost me anything on days when I don't use it.

Yep. I wanted the display, the RAM and the speed. And for me it's well worth it. A 128GB version might still tempt me next year, but otherwise I'm good for a while.

Quoting greasespot (Reply 19):
The screen would be nice but I pretty much only rent standard def movies and tv shows from iTunes.

Movies are the least of its uses, at least for me. Yes, I've loaded a few full-HD trailers on it and they look very impressive when watched at a relatively close distance.

The primary advantage is with text, however, and with detailed graphics. Text is incredibly crisp and perfectly readable even with lots of small type on a multicolumn page. This is the first fully capable e-reader I've ever seen with no readability compromises whatsoever.

It's actually better quality than much of what you'll get in print.

Quoting greasespot (Reply 19):
The camera means nothing to me as I have an Iphone 4. I am not going to be waving the ipad around to take pics.

That would probably blur the image anyway, 5 megapixels or not...

Since the iPad is an excellent paperless document container, the camera can be used to soak up papers that way: It's a built-in document scanner, among other things. And it's probably the only camera in existence with a 3.1 megapixel viewfinder where it's really possible to judge the focus.

It is also the absolutely perfect platform for augmented reality. Even beyond what's already there on iOS the new iPad provides intriguing possibilities in this field.

Quoting D L X (Reply 6):
Whereas for me, the Dashboard is one of the worst things about OS X.

Widgets just look fancy, but they are not actually useful. In fact, they are detrimental, chewing away battery life.

Only very few of them do (just one of mine, but even that one's consumption is negligible, particularly on the desktop machine). All well-behaved Widgets fall asleep swhen the Dashboard is hidden away.

Quite a few of them are really useful, and with a quick four-finger swipe to the left they're all there without having to dig around for their information separately. And just as quickly put away again.

Some of the ones I use on my iMac:
• calendar + upcoming events overview
• weather
• sunrise/sunset times
• sunlit earth
• multiple world clock instances
• calculator
• server control
• computer multi-parameter dashboard
• stocks
• stickies

In effect Apple has started to establish notification center on iOS as a kind of dashboard. We'll have to see what they'll be doing with it in iOS 6 in autumn.
