It is a little belated, so my apologies:

March 31st, Mr Hockey (a.k.a. Gordie Howe) turned 84. It seems like he only just retired !

I remember the last time I saw him play was late March 1980, Hartford @ Winnipeg (NHL). He was almost 52 at the time, still out there competing with the young Turks. 26 years in the NHL, 4 in the WHA, and not to forget 1 year as a 17 year old in the old USHL in Omaha. Simply amazing, and I feel no fear in saying a feat of endurance that will never be equalled.

One of my prized possessions is a personally signed picture of Number 9 in an NHL All-star jersey from 1962. I was in hospital recovering from a broken shoulder (at age 11), during my summer vacation, and my uncle, a sportswriter, asked Gordie to drop by my ward, which he did. There were four of us, and for a brief time at least, all those young boys' pain disappeared. A great moment.

A salute the the greatest hockey player ever.

Another thing we may never see again in the NHL: a father and two sons on the ice at the same time for the same team!

That's a memory to cherish!

Inspiration, move me brightly!

I thought the greatest hockey player ever was Scott Gomez? Especially since he plays for the Canadiens!

Joke aside, happy birthday to Gordie!
