2014 Alfa Romeo 4C sports car (concept)

The Alfa Romeo 4C trademark, covering accessories such as clothing and toys as well as the vehicle and parts, was issued by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 10th, according to a Fiat/Chrysler press release.

Fiat's CEO stated to the automotive press on April 4th that that the super-lightweight (about 1900 pounds thanks to Fiat's extensive use of expensive carbon fiber in its construction) mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive coupe will definitely go on sale in North America by the end of 2013.

Deliveries of the 4C, which will be built beginning in May 2013 at a plant run by Fiat's Maserati division in Modena, Italy, will begin in Europe in the summer of 2013. Maserati is also rumored to be getting its own version of the 4C - could a new generation Chrysler Crossfire also be in the cards??

Fiat, which plans to sell approximately 2,500 4Cs a year, showed a concept version of the car last year at the Geneva auto show (photo above). The pricetag on the gorgeous new 4C is rumored to be about $60,000 USD. The Alfa 4C will be powered by a new lightweight aluminum 4-cylinder 1.8-liter turbocharged direct- injection engine that produces at least 200 horsepower. An additonal 5,000 to 10,000 roadster versions, likely labeled called the "Spyder" (imagine that!) , will be built by Abarth, the high-performance subsidiary of Fiat - similar to the new SRT division of Chrysler.

Alfa is aiming the 4C at Porsche Cayman and Lotus Exige/Elise buyers - not Corvette buyers. The new SRT Viper is meant to deal with the Vette in the new-car marketplace.

The 4C is part of Fiat's complete revamp of their Alfa Romeo brand - which will include a brand-new Giulia sedan, which itself will be based on the current Dodge Dart platform (which itself is a heavily revised and widened version of an existing Alfa platform) and sold in North America starting in 2014. Their is also a rumored Alfa crossover vehicle and/or SUV coming to the USA in the next 2 years as well. Fiat is trying to position the rebirth of Alfa Romeo as a viable alternative to BMW - a tall order, to say the least!

About time. I'll get the swear box.

The Viper will compete well against the ZR1 and not too badly against the Z06. But the ~$35,000 price difference is going to matter a lot to potential Corvette buyers and faster Challengers won't cut it. That said, no Corvette will have the soul and passion of the Alfa.

We'll see about that. Doing it with front wheel drive based platforms will be hard, even if they are four wheel drive. The weight distribution can be hard to overcome so matching the dynamics of BMW will be super challenging.

They're two different cars BMI. Every Corvette owner I know feels very passionate about their cars. And once I return from overseas permanently, I will join their ranks!

But I will say that the 4C is a beautiful car.    It looks like it has a little bit of Ferrari in it!
Just a little too small for me!

Agree. The driving dynamics of a RWD vehicle cannot be replicated by FWD chassis. Audi resorts to the installation of its trademark Quattro AWD system in its sportiest models in order to better compete with BMW.

While this Alfa 4C sports coupe will be RWD, most of Alfa's vehicles are FWD and it is expected that the main Alfa models such as the Giulietta and the Giulia (that would compete against the 1-Series and the 3-Series, respectively) will be FWD.

A separate thread discusses whether Chrysler should have a model above the 300. Most of the posters there talk about a bigger, more luxurious sedan, but I mentioned in that thread that Chrysler should consider launching a sports or touring coupe to slot above the 300. I think a Crossfire successor would have to be priced at 40K or so and would compete against the 4C. Perhaps Chrysler should instead consider a bigger coupe with a bigger engine if it wants a halo car. Something like the concept Thunderbolt of the '90s (luxo-sport) or the concept Firepower of the '00s (sport).

AWD helps a lot, especially a new computer controlled system. But what it can't fix is the weight distribution. The BMW 3 Series boasts a 50/50 distribution while the Audi A4's is 55.5/44.5. The 5 Series vs. A6 is about the same.

The Elise is as light, with the same kind of engine, and doesn't need carbon to do it. Maybe the Alfa will have more equipment.
