Holden Coupe60 concept / Next-gen Buick Riviera

GM's Buick Motor Division is the latest GM brand to leave a paper-trail for its future products by filing for a tradermark on May 3 with the U.S. Government Patent Office to cover its classic Riviera nameplate.

This action seems to be in line with the General Motors methodology to file when there’s a likely chance something might actually be produced (like what recently happenned with Chevy's new “SS" sport sedan).

Back to 2007, Buick unveiled a Riviera concept at the Shanghai Motor Show and this concept also made an appearance again in 2008 at the Detroit Auto Show, but GM poor financial condition killed the concept Riviera.

Buick executives said to the automotive press last year that Buick would like to have a "premium coupe" as a halo vehicle for the division. There has been a persistent rumor that if Holden goes forward with the development and production of their attractive Coupe60 concept, Buick is in line to get a version of it - thus the new 21st century Buick Riviera.

Will it be RWD/AWD or FWD/AWD? The side window is a bit long but it looks better than what's out there at this time. I hope Buick brings back the Riv and retains the Riviera template and not come up with a stupid name or generic ABC 123 handle.

Rear wheel drive. The Coupe60 concept was based on the Zeta platform (same chassis as the current Chevy Camaro), which means that the new-gen Riviera could incorporate the Camaro's existing V-8 and V-6 motors - with a Buick luxury interior.

It will be FWD, and not related to Holden I believe.

Anyhow, all will be clear very soon with regards to RWD and GM - stay tuned.

Nooooo!! Please not the coupe version of the FWD/AWD Opel Insignia! Rivieras are supposed to be larger coupes, more expressively styled, luxurious, and powerful - not the Insignia GTC. The GTC coupe would probably be fine as a Buick Regal GS, but not a Riviera.

Sorry about that, there is absolutely no hints of any 2 door model based on either Z2SC (short wheelbase) or Z2LC (long wheelbase). Unless something radical happens - I don't see anything like this happening.

I could see a coupe in the Caprice long-wheelbase that would be rather nice with long front doors and a pillarless side-profile and individual reclining rear-seats, but it surely wouldn't be cheap. It'd be a lovely looking car though, along the lines of a Mercedes CL. That's just something in my mind. Not even in photoshop or on paper.

I could also potentially see a HSV 2 door along the lines of the C63 AMG Black Series - that would sell very well, and Holden Special Vehicles has a very strong/desirable brand image - so potentially it could sell. And it wouldn't be the first time they tried it. Last time was the HRT427, which was supposed to go into limited production at AUD$225,000 - though it ended up being something like a AUD$500,000 motorcar with exotic race-car components underpinning the whole thing. So it was very fast (ie, 0-62mph in 3.8sec and top speed 190mph+), but very expensive, very stripped out and very loud. Think GT3 RS 4.0 on steroids, or a purpose built race car that conveniently had numberplates on it (for the only one ever sold out of two built).

Again, that's just thinking aloud on what could fit with the brands - but neither will ever happen.

Actually this might be a nice car for GM to use in introducing a new convertible. Stick it in the Buick line, or even as a Chevy.

Could it possibly be that the Buick Riviera could be underpinned by the replacement for the now out-of-production "Sigma" platform (Sigma was the old Cadillac STS/SLS sedan, current CTS models, and first-generation Cadillac SRX) that I'm reading is to be named the "Omega" platform within GM? The rumor is that the brand-new Omega large car and CUV platform (no relation to the old Opel or Oldsmobile nameplates) will support the long-rumored Cadillac RWD large "flagship" sedan (similiar in size to the Lexus LS, Mercedes S class, and BMW 7 series) that could replace the existing Opel Insignia-based (Epsilion 2) Cadillac XTS, and a companion RWD Buick full-sized sedan (and perhaps large Mercedes CL sized coupes - I thinking revived Eldorado and Riviera coupes here) similiar in size to the current XTS in order to spread around the engineering and development costs of an uber-expensive new platform.

I mean let's face it, if Cadillac is serious that it wants to be a "global" brand, GM must fork over the money to deveiop and market a full-sized RWD (and AWD) version of a large flagship sedan - especially in the growing Chinese and Middle Eastern markets where chauffeur-driven sedans are the norm for wealthy business people and government officials.
