Looks like the saga comes to an apparent close; he's just arrived on UA 88 from PEK-EWR. Not too happy about living, expressing concern about safety about his family. He will study as a fellow at NYU apparently.

His cousin got arrested a week ago, because he pulled a knife and threatened a police officer with it. You have to hate China, they put you behind bars for such a minor thing!

well, uh, In the US if you brandish a weapon (like a knife) in front of the fuzz, I'm sure they'd arrest you here.

I've just been in China and interestingly, they've reported quite a bit about the affair. More negativity towards the US than towards Mr Chen, for what it's worth.
Samson was a biblical tough guy, but his dad Samsonite was even more of a hard case.
