Hi!
I know it's not cool to like country music but just wanted to ask what country songs to people like to get some ideas of more stuff to listen to. I don't really listen to much country music and am certainly no expert but here are a couple of tunes I like:

While I wouldn't say I'm a country music fan I certainly don't mind some of it. Mild pet peeve of mine asking what sort of music someone likes, they say everything, I say what about country, they say god no. My mum and stepdad have been fans of country music forever, and I think they've done studies that your music taste is heavily influenced by what you grow up hearing.
Some of my favourites.
Garth Brooks - The River
Garth Brooks - Standing outside the fire
Garth Brooks - We shall be free
Darius Rucker - Alright
Tim McGraw - Live like you were dying
Toby Keith - Courtesy of the red white and blue
Toby Keith - I love this bar
There's a few Brad Paisley and Keith Urban ones I like that I can't recall off the top of my head and I won't even start with my favourite Johnny Cash songs.

I hate country music because I am a heavy metal guy, However Johnnie Cash is well respected in the rock world as several rock groups have covered his songs... and in this case Johnnie Cash did a cover of a rock song - Nine Inch Nail's Hurt

Sorry, but that's a childish statement. Either you like something because you do like it or you don't. Saying you "hate" something just because you're supposed to is usually what 13-year old kids do.
Anyway, back to topic. Some more "old" Country like the ones Confuscious posted:

I've always liked most genre's of music however I didn't really care that much for Country that was until an ex I had really got me into it. I mostly like local stuff. Heres a few of my favourites.

Well I really hate it because to me it sounds like cats being tortured, but that is just my opinion. I am sure a lot of country fans would say that about heavy metal - think about it, it is just about as far apart as two music genres can get.

Way to paint with a broad brush. It's 75% of what I listen to. Country is just another type of music, that many people from a large chunk of the USA listen to. Now it may not be what the old guard likes, but I quite enjoy the newer pop-country as well.

Sorry for the typos, I can't type in low light condition. I need to see the letters on the keyboard.
I can listen to almost any kind of music, except to rap and hip hop. I guess...
I'm a little bit country
And I'm a little bit rock 'n roll
I'm a little bit of Memphis and Nashville
With a Little bit of Motown in my soul
I don't know if it's good or bad

My current song I'm into is Better Than I Use to Be by Tim McGraw
I also like:
Cost of Livin' - Ronnie Dunn
Mountain Music - Alabama
Country Must Be Country Wide - Brantley Gilbert
Good Directions - Billy Currington
My Next Thirty Years - Tim McGraw
I'll post some more when I'm off work. Check the songs out and let me know what you think. Ever since going to UND, I've become addicted to Country.
So we beat on against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Hi!
Many thanks for all the ideas of songs to listen to everyone. I will check them out and have heard a few and they sound good. I didn't mean to offend anyone saying country music was not cool, it's just living in the UK there is so little country music on radio and stuff. But that is the beauty of the internet!

Hello Donny and Marie!!
All the ones listed are fantastic songs!! I stopped listening to country for a while after Gretchen Wilson turned it into an I'm-more-Redneck-then-you fest, but I love a lot of country music.
ANYTHING by Patty Loveless but especially "Blame it on Your Heart," "Nothing Like the Lonely," "You Can Feel Bad," "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye," "Jealous Bone,"
Reba...how in the world do you pick?? Maybe "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter"
Tanya Tucker: "Little Things"
Travis Tritt: "Tell Me I Was Dreaming"
Blackhawk: "I'm Not Strong Enough to Say No"
Little Texas: "What Might Have Been"
Dolly Parton (hate if you like!!): "Coat of Many Colors"
Kathy Mattea: "Walking Away a Winner"
Loretta Lynn: "Your Squaw is on the Warpath."
And last but not least: Shania Twain: "If You're not in it for Love, I'm Outta Here."

I'm old school. Just like other music I do not care for most of the stuff since the mid 70's through today. Same goes for Country Music. Here are some of my Yee Ha faves. In no particular order.
- Patsy Cline- I'll Fall To Pieces
- Lee Hazel-wood: Jackson
- Johnny Cash- 99% of his music!
- Elvis Presley (95% of his music!) The King was a crossover but still has country routes
-Tennessee Ernie Ford- 16 Tons
-Roger Miller: King of The Road (A side note: the answer record "Queen of the House" was one of the worst songs country or otherwise!)
-Charlie Pride- Kiss An Angel Good Mornin
-Conway Twitty-Only Make Believe
-Skeeter Davis-Can't Get Over You
-Kenny Rogers & First Edition-Ruby Don't Take Your Love
-Jimmy Dean-Big Bad John
-George Jones-Root Beer
-Ferlin Husky-Since You've Been Gone
-Jerry Lee Lewis-Breathless and 90% of his music
-Johnny Paycheck: Take This Job and Shove It
-Sheb Wooley- Purple People Eater (hillbilly novelty Haloween song)

Tom Petty said it best; "What they call country music today is sort of like bad rock groups with a fiddle."
Good country music died about 30 years ago.
Interesting that some early Tom Petty material as well as The Doobie Brothers, John Cougar Mellencamp, Allman Brothers, The Eagles and even the Commodores had songs that could pass as country music.
Another artist that I like is John Denver but I think he is more folk than country.
Over-looked songs that aren't considered country by artist that aren't classified as country.
I love this stuff;
Ok this may be a stretch but the arrangements in this song is indeed, country. Just listen to that slide guitar.

Anything Johnny Cash.
Quoting ATTart (Reply 25): Well, I think most Old American Country is GARBAGE!!!!! Johnny Cash I do like..
Well, I like both. But I do like modern Country better.
And thank you ATTart for using "I think" in your sentence! I hate it when people state their opinion as if it was a fact.

They were so bad they are kitschy.
When we were kids they always had these bad commercials hawking the Statler Brother's greatest hits. My sister and I memorized the cheesy songs. One of them being Do You Remember These and something about the movies are great medicine.
I liked Jim Stafford's late 1973 hit Spiders and Snakes
I also really liked the original 1950's version of Hot Rod Lincoln! The Commander Cody 1972 remake was overplayed and sucked in my opinion. Also, Surgarland music is almost as sucky as Bieber, Katy Perry and even Maroon 5!

I'm gonna stray a bit from the old school country and put this one up. These guys are from East Texas and their music is generally in line with the outlaw-style. This is pretty popular in the Texas/Oklahoma region.
