American GI's are rebuilding Afghanistan.

120 US Army soldiers are in rural Afghanistan spending about 8 million a year rebuilding broken schoolhouses, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. The US is pouring American dollars into impoverished Afghan workers and posting signs on the completed 25 projects giving credit to the central Afghan government.

But wait! I thought the US was destroying Afghanistan because we hate the Muslim people and that we enjoy killing hundreds of millions of collateral damage civilians?? What is this goodwill on the part of the US??

Now this US effort should be broadcast all over the Arab world on Al Jazeera and supported with Arabic speaking US foreign service diplomats explaining in Arabic what the US is doing, why we are doing it, and what a great future we see for the Afghan people.

Israel starts Evacuating West Bank Settlements

The Israeli Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezar has announced the IDF will begin evacuating and closing down many illegal Jewish settlemts accross the West Bank. The first 20 will be shuttered in the coming days.

NO! Israel removing Israelis from the West Bank!! What? This can't be true. Maybe Israel isn't the all hateful domineering imperial power eager at jumping at any chance at confiscating land?? Could it be, when Jewish Israelis break the law they are dealt with the same way as Arabs??

These shuttered settlements should quickly be donated to impoverished innocent Palestinians with children. Not ones related to suicice bombers. These images of evacuated Israeli settlements being given to impoverished and grateful Palestinians should also be broadcast on Al Jazeera and backed up by Israeli Arab government people explaining the move and how it is not and never will be Israel's intent on colonizing the entire west bank at every opportunity.

Would Al Jazeera broadcast any of this?? one can dream  Big grin

Strangley enough Al-Jazeera is viewed by many westerners as Al-Qaeda TV. It is viewed as being blind, siding with the Arabs and overly biased. While the Arab governments say that Al-Jazeera is controlled by "Zionists" say that it supports Israel and aims to destroy the Arab world. In fact it is banned from Bahrain and untill recently was banned from Morocco and Kuwait.

And so Al-Jazeera which is located only a few blocks out of my hous (I live in Doha, Qatar) is viewed negativley by both the Western/Israeli governments as well as the Arab governments.

Main Reasons why it is hated by the Western/Israeli Governments is that they have extensive coverage of the situation in Palestine/Israel and Afghanistan. In Israel alone they have cameras and reporters stationed in every major palestinian zone and have live videos of the events as they unfold. The reporters used by Al-Jazeera are one of the best in the world and most of whom where part of the BBC's Arabic channel which went bust before their first broadcast date. They are not afraid to cover every detail and sometimes risk their lives for their jobs. In the past Al-Jazeera reporters/cameramen were shot at least 3 times in Israel and Al-Jazeera's offices were blasted in Kabul, the reporter himself nearly got killed several times. Some times the images they broadcast are very sensitive and Israel and the US would not like the Arab viewers let alone the Israeili viewers to see these images.

The Arab governments also objected to Al-Jazeera's coverage. Many have had diplomatic problems with Qatar and threatened to end all trade and dimplomatic relations with Qatar if Al-Jazeera is not stopped.

This is because for the first time the Arab viewers were allowed to speak their minds. Opposition groups of the Bahraini, Egyptian, Syrian governments etc... were allowed to speak their minds on TV and express their dissatisfaction with the Arab rulers.

Another first for the Arab world was that Al-Jazeera showed many social problems in many Arab countries such as drug usage, prostition, womens rights, honour killings, poverty, hunger, lack of education and medical care. This upset the governments in many Arab countries who mainly denied these problems existed.

"American GI's are rebuilding Afghanistan.

First of all Al-Jazeera isn't biased as you think they have new reports about this. Although I am curious on how they are spending USD$ 8mil. a year there and the US has only been in Afghanistan for a few months. Although Al-Jazeera doesn't concentrate much on this as this is insignificant to the projects funded by many governments in the Gulf to rejuvinate Afghanistan. E.g. the Emir of Qatar is establishing a fully functioning hospital in Kabul which will costs tens of Millions of Dollars to complete and the medical treatment costs will be covered by the Emir himself.

"Now this US effort should be broadcast all over the Arab world on Al Jazeera and supported with Arabic speaking US foreign service diplomats explaining in Arabic what the US is doing, why we are doing it, and what a great future we see for the Afghan people."

---and---

"on Al Jazeera and backed up by Israeli Arab government people explaining the move and how it is not and never will be Israel's intent on colonizing the entire west bank at every opportunity. "

Everyday Al-Jazeera has regular guests including Arabic speaking American and Israeli government officials. Al-Jazeera has interviews with many officials from the military, Israeli State TV, the US DOS etc... everyday.

"Would Al Jazeera broadcast any of this?? one can dream "

I haven't seen Al-Jazeera for weeks now. So if you give me the dates of the withdrawel of the settlers then I will check out the archives.

If you have anymore question TNNH please feel free to ask

QatarAirways:

Thanks for a very strong post/reply. I'm not surprised Arab governments are uneasy over Al Jazeera, its the last thing they need. Violent pictures of Israelis and Palestinians, dead Arabs, curfews, shootouts, etc... these images incite anger at Israel, the US, and the US supported Arab autocrats.

Everyday Al-Jazeera has regular guests including Arabic speaking American...... government officials.

Now thats terrific. I know the Israelis have a lot of Arabic speakers, but the US has many too? Next time your watching can you see who these Americans are (positions, names), and report back on here. I'd appreciate that a ton.

How is the American PR machine in the Arab world? In the US its widely viewed as abysmal, that the US has completely failed in every sense of the word to convey our interests in a credible and accurate fashion to the Arab street. The view is that if we did a better job (more information, more media more Arabic speakers, more radio station etc...) we can influence public opinion to our side, ie... that the US wants to help the Arab world, that the US does not hate all Muslims, that the US wants peace in Palestine and redevelopment in Afghanistan, etc....

Although Al-Jazeera doesn't concentrate much on this as this is insignificant to the projects funded by many governments in the Gulf to rejuvinate Afghanistan.

Of course 8 million is a small number, but you know as well as me that thats only a tiny percentage (its actually billions) of what the US has done financially for Afghanistan in these past 9 months. Whats significant about this 8 million, is that this is not large lump sums to the Karzai government or military expenditures, or donations of uniforms, jeeps, guns, etc... This program is simply American soldiers handing out dollar bills to real average impoverished rural Afghans so they can rebuilt their own schools, roads, etc..

I like this aproach much more than the other foreign aide apparatuses the US has supplied to the Karzai government. This approach connects rural average Afghans immediately with US representative with US dollars destined for infrastrucure improvements. Real world improvements people see quickly built and completed. THAT, the US needs much more of.

Heavymetal,
Well I wouldn't mind that at all. Qatar Airways has an A319CJ maybe we could use that.

TNNH,

The US has many Arabic speakers. I can't remember the names exactly but I think one is Chris Ross from the Department of State he comes on nearly everyday from his offices in Washington. Al-Jazeera also had ex-Ambassadors of Egypt, Jordan etc... some of whom speak Arabic. I'll try to note down their names.

"How is the American PR machine in the Arab world? In the US its widely viewed as abysmal, that the US has completely failed in every sense of the word to convey our interests in a credible and accurate fashion to the Arab street."

The US has in the Arab world 2 Arabic speaking radio stations. VOA of course and another new one which was launched after the War in Afghanistan. The thing is that the US advertises that the latter station is aimed at making the people in the ME especially the younger ones more friendly towards the US and so many people just don't listen to it. Israel will also launch an Araboc Language TV station by the end of the week according to the press release I have seen.

Another problem is that sometimes the Arab speaking US officials mock and insult the people of the Arab world including Mr. Freidman who made an appearance on Al-Jazeera and so they are not viewed with credibility. Another problem is that many US officials dodge the questions of the show host or the questions of the viewers and so make it seem that they are hiding something. Everyday they repeat the officials same Rhetoric on the shows it almost seems they are reading of a peice of paper.

I don't know about other viewers but I find the Israeli officials much more credible since they don't usually mock the arab viewers or insult us and also many do answer the question no matter how sensitive they are.

On the other hand Al-Jazeera is seriously considering having an English Language channel broadcast to the world since they have much interest from English Speaking and even Israeli viewers and so because of that they have started to use english sub-titles in the highest rating shows and hebrew sub-titles might be implemented.

"Al-Jazeera banned in Morocco ? I honestly don't know many folks who watch that channel but I never heard of a TV station being banned here. review your sources again before making false statments."

I have reviewed my sources which include Al-Sharq newspaper, Al-Raya nespaper and staff working in Al-Jazeera themselves. When I said banned I meant that they were no longer allowed to station reporters their and no longer allowed to take photos or videos there. The ban itself was recently lifted but still Al-Jazeera is limited to what they can report on e.g. they were not allowed to make a report on the growing drug problem in Morocco. The Ban happened after something was said by a guest I think, against the government. Morocco even threatened to cut diplomatic relations with Qatar at that time. In fact when the King of Morocco visited Qatar only a few weeks ago their was an article in the newspaper showing how the relationship between Morocco and Qatar has healed.

Well, that is quite a lot for me to type but I am working on a translation. here is the first part: (it is rough at some parts)
-Israeli tanks sweep the city of al-khalil (I forget what Americans call this city) and kill 4 palestinian policemen and arrest 150 others.
-Martyrdom of a member of the Islamic Jihad movement during an attempted attack on an Israeli military position in east Gaza.
-France assures that the violence can't be stopped in the area without taking efforts for a political solution to the Palestinian issue.

The (# killed) in confrontations between Palestinian police and occupying forces rose in the city of al-khalil in the west bank at dawn today to 4 martyrs from the police forces, among them an intelligence officer, and 5 injured. Occupying forces arrested 150 palestinian officers in the operation itself. Also, a 5th Palestinian was martyred during an attempted suicide attack in east Gaza.
Palestinian sources said that the 2 Palestinian intelligence officer were (-) and (-) , and the other 2 names are unknown. And it was added that among the arrested was the president of the intelligence service in the city of al-khalil.

-I am still working.-please excuse the sloppy english, and correct mistakes if you see them. Big grin

Occupying forces stormed the al-khalil HQ using military vehicles acompanied by appache helicopters under heavy fire. Occupying forces prevented ambulances from getting to the injured during the conflict.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Jihad said that one of its members was killed during an attempted attack on an Israeli military positon in east Gaza. Sources in the movement said that Mohammed Nafiz Abu Mursa (19yrs old from alsheikh Radwan neighborhood in Gaza) was killed in the early hours this morning when he carried out an operation against the occupying forces and fought for an hour near the area of (?) in east Gaza, and it was said that he distributed videotapes confirming (his intentions to become a martyr).

Sharons statements-
Ariel Sharon
On the other side, Israeli PM Sharon once again imposed the condition of a change in the Palestinian command for the sake of resuming negotiations with the Palestinians. A statement from the Israeli cabinet said that it is not possible to discuss moving forward politically until after a complete stop to the terrorism, violence, and propoganda directed against him, and when the Palestinian Autority undergoes true reforms, including a new command. The statement also said that Sharon bitterly put out these conditions on many occasions.
These statements come after the speech of American president George Bush yesterday, which called for Palestinians to change their leadership, and he considered it a prerequisite as he sees it to establishing a Palestinian state in a 3 year span.

Your future in the Army may have you working covertly are you worried you just told, basically the whole world, your in the Army, you studied Arabic, your profile gives your name and e-mail and where you trained and currently live.

Maybe the rules are different in the Army but I am just playing devils advocate here, could I be going overboard? I think it's a great idea to keep such information confidential since we are at war with Muslim Terrorists and they have been known to frequent such aviation sites as this. My roommate went on to work for an intelligence organization and people like you with language skills are typically recruited. Might want to keep it on the down low.
