There were delays in uploading posts towards the end of the Q2 thread, so hopefully a new one will solve the problem. Going by the quaity of pics in the last one, I have no doubt the standards will be just as high in this one!

My own modest first contribution:

Monster bee. Think it was about 5cm long.

Looks like a regular honeybee.

Quoting david_itl (Reply 1):
Monster bee.

A bumblebee, from the looks of it. 5cm would be monstrous, but they can normally reach about half that, which is already quite large for such an insect.

Nice pictures, though.

Thanks for that. Really pleased at how the deer photo came out.

Quoting Klaus (Reply 2):

This is the only photo I've got where a comparison can made - unfortunately, the big one is out of focus. Not sure how far apart the flowers were but that bee was a lot bigger than anything other insect that I saw

It was one of those unfortunate situations when I had forgotten to bring my camera with me. However the view was too good to not be photographed, so the cameraphone had to do. I took 18 frames and the one uploaded was the best - unfortunately it seems to have a slightly pink/red tint.

LOL! If it is, I hope it's something interesting . . .

I think both of them just have some feathers stuck in their nostrils after some preening, but I could be wrong. And if you look again, they are actually swans. Any ornithologists on a.net care to comment?

Now why do they always remind me of the old SAA 747s?

This one is aviation-related, but can't upload it to A.net, so here you go. Panorama of LAX and the forest fire cloud from Imperial Hill:

That's one tall smoke column, considering that Mt. Wilson (the ridge in the center of the photo) is 5,700 feet.

And a couple sunset shots from Dockweiler Beach:

The classic rally cars did one run through the stages after the first run by the pro drivers. Here is a Renault 5 Turbo. Also driving was 3 Lancia Stratos, A Golf Mk.1, a Trabant, a Wartburg 311 and a bunch of Fiat Abarth 124s and 131s.

What kind of lens do you have? You got some great close ups in your Le Mans album.

I rented a 400 mm for the race this year, but too little time to master it correctly.

This and most of my Le Mans photos were taken with the Canon 100-400L IS USM. Though for this and the closeups like it I should mention that I climbed one of the low barriers and shot directly through the chain-link fence, which is a tactic that I'm not sure the marshals like you doing. I was shooting in the 9-10AM region on Sunday morning which is pretty dead in terms of crowd activity, so no one gave me trouble. The frontal angle really helps for these because I am not good at panning with this lens.

That's the lens I rented for the week, but it took me some time to get some decent shots out of it. I'd like to buy one and use it more often, but I don't have the budget for it at the moment.

Quoting Newark727 (Reply 64):

No they don't like it, but some are more lenient than others. You're not the only one doing it

___________________________________________________________________________________________

So, the local camera club started back this week after the summer recess (it's like going back to school!) and we were asked to have two abstract and two reflection prints for a competition, which was judged by the members on a show of hands (one vote per member and, like the Eurovision, you couldn't vote for your own). My abstract prints didn't rate, but I was delighted to come second in the reflection competition. And it was all the more surprising as some of the members are very experienced photograpers with some very expensive equipment. The pic that I took with my DSLR didn't rate, but this is the one that came second, which I took on my point-and-shoot a couple of years ago. Just goes to show that you don't always have to have the most advanced kit to take a nice shot!

Shot a music video with a band I've been playing with recently; got to take some photos at some locations which I hadn't been to before. Did a bunch of HDR stuff:

The photos reminds me of a model named Torie Tastic. I'm a fan of hers.
I'd like to find out how her photographer manages to get those images.

Shhh! We're trying to win people over!!

Actually, I'm not technically a member of the band. It's a former coworker's band, and they lost their bassist a few months ago. So I've been doing a bunch of stuff with them: playing gigs, shooting a video, laying down bass tracks on some songs....pretty much everything except practicing with them.

Not sure how much longer that will go on. It's a lot of fun, and nothing too difficult at all, but it's not really my scene.

Awesome!
The preppy hair-cut just doesn't work in a heard rock band.

Sounds like they need your stage presence to help the band-mates get girls after the gigs.
Too bad you weren't in LA in 1987 during the hair metal years. You would have been perfect in that scene. I caught the tail end of it and unfortunately was too young to get in to the 21 & over clubs to really get the full taste of it.
By the time I turned 21 in 1994, the grunge cancer had already spread and glam rock was gone.

Seriously though, those photos look like they could be on an album cover or on the inner-sleeve.
Reminds me of the first Skid Row and Damn Yankees album covers.

Unfortunately my onstage presence doesn't translate to offstage presence!
Quoting Superfly (Reply 89):

Um, no, it is definitely not too bad.

I was listening to a '90s mix I made earlier today. Reminded me how much I love a lot of those songs (to be fair, most of them aren't "grunge" really - more just rock/hard rock). There's just something about a lot of '90s production/sound that I love.

That look only works for the synth pop, girlie boy bands.
Quoting vikkyvik (Reply 90):

Are you implying that you stuffed a sock 'down there' to enhance you're look?

Quoting vikkyvik (Reply 90):
Um, no, it is definitely not too bad.

You could have pulled off the glam rock look pretty well with your long hair.
If/when that style comes back, you should go for the fringe leather jackets and spurs on the cowboy boots. I would avoid the yellow & black zebra stripe spandex.
Would be cool to mock the 80s look if you get a Halloween performance.
