My First Interview

Hello everyone,

I have finally managed to get a job interview after what feels like I've applied to hundreds of jobs! I'm currently still at college and haven't had a job or proper interview before. The job is a part time supermarket assistant.

It isn't a one to one interview, it is a group interview. From reading online, it sounds like there will be a product pitch, working with one other person and a short presentation about myself in front of all other candidates.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips? They would be greatly appreciated!

Be relaxed


Answer the following questions to yourself:

What's your strenght? (One or two things related to the position you want)

Where are you at your weakest? (Should be something that does not really have anything to do with the position)

Why did you apply for this job? ("Just for the money" is not a good answer)

What do you know about our company?

Always have questions. Always.

When I interview people I begin with asking "what initial questions do you have for me?" It catches them off guard, demonstrates a bit of how they will handle being put on the spot, and provides insight into the level of preparation that s/he did for this interview.

What company did you apply to? I currently work in a supermarket part time, the interview was quick and pretty easy, I asked questions about the job role and the store etc. Its also handy to read up a bit about the company just in case they ask any questions (I got asked the founders name).

Knowing about the company and having questions is always important. If all your questions were answered I would try to think of something. But nothing stupid by that I mean don't ask about salary unless they bring it up or how long lunch breaks are etc...

Do a lot of research on the Supermarket company that is hiring you. Fifty % of your success at your interview will depend on th the way you answer the questions above. But, at the end of the interview, the will ask you:

Do you have any questions for us? And boy, do you better have at least three. That will show them that you know what you are getting into and that you have talken the interest to study the potential company you´ll be joining.

Asking three questions about THEM when they give you the opportunity to ask will probably set you aprat from other candidates.

Yes. The key to a successful interview is to turn it around and ask your own questions, get the interviewer to start talking about himself. "How did you arrive at this company?", "What attributes did you find most helped you in your career? The more he talks about himself, the better he feels about the interview (subconscious flattery), and the easier it is for you.

Of course that is easier to do one-on-one, but you should definitely ask questions.

Um, yeah, but that's a real fine line there. A lot of people I've interviewed will carry on about more "strengths" when I ask what their weakness is. They word it a little differently, (probably because someone told them it was a good idea), and basically tell me the same thing I just asked when we talking about strengths. Depending on my level of patience, I may continue on already having decided not to hire, or I may just dismiss them on the spot (without explanation, as policy requires of course). For the record, the reason why that kind of answer will get a person kicked out of an interview is two-fold. On one hand, you've basically just lied to me, and on the other, you've managed to fail to take direction properly (answering a question I didn't ask) while doing so.

What you say there, planeguy, is not bad advice, per se. But again, it's something this guy wants to be real careful with, as I'm not the only member of mgmt to ever feel this way about that particular question. As a practical matter, the best answer I've ever heard to that one was when a young man told me his weakness was that he couldn't get over some floozy who dumped him twelve years ago. It led to an interesting conversation, but above all I was able to determine that he had enough insight to know when something was a problem and approximately what perspective to hold it in. That was five years ago when he interviewed for a part time fueler spot. He's our Operational Safety and Training Supervisor now. Diagnostic and intellectual honesty will get you a lot further than a BS canned answer that we've all heard a thousand times before. Just sayin...



Virginblue4,

This interview is for, what, a clerk position, something like that? It's pretty obvious you're getting advice geared toward interviews for much more professional, career based positions here, so don't take it too too serious like. Just be prepared to tell them that you're super reliable (if you're not, fix it yesterday), know how to not piss off people around you, are willing to work weekends and nights and I can pretty much tell you the job is yours. As for the rest of our advice, hang onto it for when you graduate. Good Luck.

Wow. Either the job market in the supermarket industry got a lot more fierce since I was involved in it 15 years ago, or this supermarket is going over the top...

The last three interviews I had, I was interviewing the company and setting out my terms of employment, not the other way round!
