Abbreviation For "Lane" - LN Vs. LA?

Based on everwhere I have been, most cities seem to abbreviate "Lane" as LN. However, there are some exceptions, most notably Virginia Beach, Virginia, where the abbreviation LA is used on most street signs (the few that use LN in Virginia Beach were likely made by someone who is unfamiliar with Virginia Beach streets).

So, why can't cities agree to a universal standard?

Local differences, and economics don't really justify the expense of making new street signs for something that people will be able to figure out anyway.

It's one of those things I'd classify under "who really cares?" Why spend time and money on such an "issue"?

Virginia Beach was unduly influnced by a US Navy Yeoman with a sense of humor.

That is my opinion as a retired Senior Chief.

The U.S. Post Office has the official abbreviation of Lane as LN. When you look up a zip code on their website no matter how you enter the street address with Lane, LN or LA it is always converted to LN.

On a separate note, LA is the official US Postal Service abbreviation for the state of Louisana.
