America's Sheriff:

If you wanted anyone to arrest you, you wanted it to be Sheriff Andy Griffith. You get a stern talking to, maybe spend the night in the jail if that's what was called for and then went on your way after resolving to reform your bad ways.

...and they lived happily ever after...

A good life, well lived. Rest in peace Mr. Griffith.

I believe Aneta Corsaut, who played the school teacher & Andy's girlfriend Helen Crump, is still alive. But I think that's it in terms of the regular characters of the show.

Jim Nabors - Gomer Pyle on the Andy Griffith Show for 27 episodes from 62 to 64 - is still with us.

The Andy Griffith Show came from a show of "Make Room for Daddy" where Danny Thomas, the star, was arrested in a small North Carolina town by Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor.

Griffith was already a well established star - as a comedian, as a movie star, as a singer - with a Broadway hit - when the single episode show was created. Thomas, Griffith and their producers used the show as a pilot for the full Andy Griffith Show.

Recently I've heard some of his recorded comedy routines on Sirius radio's comedy channel. He was hilarious.

I stand corrected. For some reason, I thought he died a few years ago. He's probably the only surviving adult male regular cast member of the series.

Nabors wasn't able to sing at this years Indy 500 due to illness. The guy who played Gomers cousin Goober died not to long ago.

That bit of info wasn't in the original link. Not to take away from the loss, but isn't that a bit odd? I obviously don't know the legal ramifications of this type of situation.

At any rate, RIP Andy.

Wait, what? Was he so old that there were no living relatives to attend a funeral or something?

Anyway, this is sad. He seemed like a nice enough fellow.

Cue the obligatory Abraham Simpson voice.... "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatlock!"

I read it on another site, it was already prearranged by him to be immediately buried upon death. Family had a small memorial afterwards.

Sure did, "The Fishin' Hole". A nice little tune as a matter of fact! And that clip you posted ZANL even has the words to it.

So long Andy, we'll miss you and thanks for the memories, we'll see you on the other side. You and Don have fun up there, ya hear?.

Really ?

For certain , how ? did you know him personally or are you basing your opinion of his character on that which he portrayed as an actor ?

A friend of mine met him one time and extended his hand to shake his and AG gave him 'if looks could kill' look. We later found out from someone who actually worked with him that he despised his fans and was such a prima dona on the set.

In defference to the deceased I won't discuss his politics.

You're right, maybe I am talking about "andy griffith / ben matlock" the character.

A pretty nice retrospective about his career and who he was is found in his local newspaper 5 years ago.

I don't know, there've been several interviews with people who did know him on the news today. He was good friends with Randy Travis who said he was "most likeable" man he's ever met.
