Here is the situation. I moved to a new city, and don't know too many people. One day, I threw out my back and am unable to do do any heavy lifting. This sucks, because I have lots of items I need to move up to my apartment and also assemble (table, futon, computer desk etc). I looked at the labor section of Craigslist, but I am a bit concerned because, it is CL. Has anyone done this? Any success or recommendations? I am a "one and done" type of person and would like to hire someone for the afternoon to assemble all of my items, but am wiry because it is CL.

As with everything on CL, you just have to pay attention to who you're dealing with and what you're getting yourself into. If you're hiring them to move your furniture, they more than likely don't carry any form liability insurance. I don't know about your state, but in Nevada it's illegal for people to advertise themselves as movers without being fully insured and licensed and listed on the NDOT website. However being casual labor, this is unlikely to be an issue assuming you're willing to take the risk. My only advice would be to check around on Google and make sure there aren't any local and reasonably priced movers before going with CL.

Exactly. CL is only as good as the person who posts the ad and the person who answers it. It works both ways if the person is looking for something and sees your ad and wonders if you are a flake.
Agree, be careful on the liability part. I have no answers to that but "in my mind" i'd wonder if I were to randomly hire some guy and he moved my furniture, tripped and fell and hurt himself. What liability would I be accountable for? I mean, in a perfect world you'd put an ad in, some guy answers, moves some stuff for you, picks up some extra cash and everybody is happy. That may very well happen! But stil,,,
