I've been living without Facebook just fine for the past three years. I finally deactivated my account a month ago. I've noticed a lot of others deactivating their accounts as well. Obviously that article is ridiculous but I do think it's on the decline, especially my generation (turning 30 this year).

I could cope without Facebook fine I think, although it has its uses for staying in touch with people I knew from University, organizing Alumni events and it even allowed me to become good friends with someone on the other side of the world who I had the pleasure of meeting in June. It certainly enhances my social experience versus hindering it.
I think Facebook closing however would impact a certain segment of many countries economies, as there are teams of people now employed solely to manage business accounts on Facebook; something that was hard to believe a while ago.
Of course there will always be a certain segment of users who have nothing better to do than pay to play lousy games on it, install applications that steal their data or add people who have less than friendly intentions, but those types of people exist in all areas - I simply remove anyone who posts anything I would regard as annoying; and it seems to work well.
As for the users who shut themselves off from the real world, perhaps they are having real world social interaction problems and Facebook has finally helped them break the chains - no everyone is capable of making friends in he real world so easily; and in this case I would argue Facebook is making the world more social.
Like it or not, Facebook isn't going anywhere soon.
(I would like to point out that the article is from a spoof news website so there's no ounce of truth to it.)

Facebook has been great to reconnect with people I've lost contact with years ago. For us older people that were around before the Internet, it was easy to lose contact when people moved. Telephone numbers change, many didn't have listed numbers and some people may go through some tragedy and fall out of contact for awhile and need to restart in a new city. All of my Facebook friends are people I've known in real life. Many from years ago when I was a kid. Also when you move to a foreign country, it's good to keep in contact with others and allow your close friends and relatives to keep in touch with you. It sure as hell beats writing multiple letters, emails, attaching individual photos etc. It also cuts down on the number of call you make.

Not only that, but it's good for other things, too. For example, a private secret group that we created is perfect for planning our Burning Man camp this year. It's good for organizing group projects like that.
Anyway, this "Facebook will end!" and "Facebook will start charging!" business goes around at least once every year. I will dismiss as absurd that a gigantic company with a user base in the hundreds of millions (if not billions by this time) would suddenly shut down all operations at some date three months in the future for no apparent reason. Facebook, like Google, is basically an advertising firm and they are doing a roaring business. They aren't going to just shut down to mess with all of us. That makes as much sense as UA announcing that, for no good reason, they are going to cease all operations on October 15th.

Obviously a fake story. Any company that is a going concern has no legitimate reason to shut down, especially considering it is now publicly held (imagine the severance packages though!).
Hypothetically, if Facebook ever did shutdown out of the blue, tens of thousands would be directly impacted. Most companies that deal directly with the end-user have people specifically whose job it is to monitor Facebook and Twitter all day. Additionally, huge companies that generate the bulk of their revenue from developing Facebook games/apps would be toast. Not to mention all the Facebook employees themselves, not that any of them would have difficulty finding another job in Silicon Valley.

Agreed. It's also a great way to view and share pictures/videos from friends' travels without having to send them all via email to each person.

Seeing as Facebook is a publicly listed company, it's not up to Mark Zuckerburg to decide whether to shut it down or not now. He needs approval from all shareholders, who I doubt will grant it unless he buys all their shares back.

Seriously, I don't think anyone here has actually fallen for it. The discussion that has resulted is more of a "what if" discussion as well as others feeling the need to justify having Facebook.
