My nephew drinks a half pint of (hard) liquor (sometimes slighly more) a night. Its getting to the point where my sister does not care anymore (he is 22, but lives at home), and he thinks that just because there are people out there that drink a fifth a day, he can get away with it. While I understand that there are plenty of people that do drink a 1/5 a day, and survive and cant imagine half of pint of hard liquor every night (or even, 5 nights a week) can be good for you?
Am i just too paranoid or can it be handled?

I think that amount of hard liquor every night is not a good sign. If it was wine or beer that´s another story but 350ml of 40% alcohol every night is too much. Try and talk to him about it and if it does not stop try and coax him into going to an AA meeting. With you, preferably.
I realized I had a problem when I was doing a 750ml bottle of 40% alcohol a night. Scotch usually. Would have saved me a lot of trouble if someone had had a talk with me before I had reached that point.

Seriously, a half pint of the hard stuff is like drinking 2 bottles of wine or 8 beers. On a daily basis, that's not good at all. Its not a healthy, moderate habit, like a glass or two of wine is. Its a drinking problem.

While one shot per day may be therapeutic what you nephew is doing is too much. Even this amount of drinking is hard on the liver and kidneys. It's not so much that he drinks this amount, but the fact that he does it every day is a concern. Does he work? Maybe he's drinking because he's bored.
