I just picked up 'Who's Next' last week on LP.

He was a very influential bass player.

IMissPiedmont:
I should have clarified my statement.

I got the 'Original Master Recording/Half Speed Master LP' last week.  Smile

I had the 8track for years though.

Not only is the death tragic, but could the timing be any worse?

Still sad when anyone dies at 57. To me that is right around the corner.

You've got great taste in music Superfly. When I come to pick up my Marauder, perhaps you'll also show me your collection?

Funny.
Just yesterday in the mail, Mercury mailed me a DVD brochure about the Marauder.

I have a Rickenbacker 4001 bass similar to the one John Entwistle plays.

Oh, man, that bites. He was one of the finest bass players ever, and he was only getting better with age (listen to the last couple of tracks of 1999's Left for Live). He was also the most musicaly talented of the Who. I'll miss him.

The Who were one of my favourite groups when I was a teenager. The drums and bass playing made them unique, never have I heard a rock group with better rhythmic background.

RIP John Entwistle. He will sure be remembered.

Apparently he had been on medication for a heart condition for some time. I was lucky enough to see the Who on a few occasions and Entwistle's bass playing was always one of the highlights. On their last tour in '99/00 he played an absolutely extraordinary bass solo as the centrepiece to "5:15" which is one of the highlights of my concert going life. You could see people's jaws drop at the speed of the fingers across the fretboard.

Entwistle always shunned the limelight, and was nowhere near as famous as he ought to have been. He was arguably the finest bass player of all time, and revolutionised the style of playing that particular instrument. This is not just another pop star disappearing, but is the loss of one of the very few of them who was also a truly great instrumentalist. He was to bass playing what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar. Even if you aren't a fan of the Who, anyone with an interest in music should listen to some of their tracks just to hear an expert at work. "The Real Me" showcased his sheer talent to great effect. It should also be remembered that he was a songwriter of some ability, most people are aware of his dark humour in songs like "Boris the Spider".

And then there were two: with the loss of Entwistle, this surely has to be the end of the Who. They have never really replaced the incomparable Keith Moon, and now the other half of the finest rhythm section in rock history has gone. The irony is that after twenty years of silence, the band were getting ready to have another stab at getting their highly unusual sound back onto tape, hoping to release an album at the end of this year. Unless they've already worked on the demos, you would expect that idea to have also gone.

So, in Pete Townshend's words which now appear unpleasantly prescient, half of the Who really have died before they got old.

What a loss. I had the privelidge of seeing him on his solo tour a few years back at a small club in Providence - WOW! What a show. The only way I can describe his playing is "lead bass". No one has ever sounded like him & no one will.

R.I.P. John..........

Yes, Rapo, lead bass just about sums it up. Anyone who ever heard the song "Trick of the Light" from the "Who Are You" album can back that up. On that track he played a sixteen string bass guitar, which completely obliterated the need for an electric guitar, Pete Townshend more or less limited to an occasional note to flesh out the sound a bit more.

What made the Who special was that the bass tended to carry the tune throughout, with Townshend's electric guitar offering the rhythm, rather than the lead. The beat (such as it was, Moon did just about everything but that) was therefore attached to the electric guitar, not the bass.

Many bands tried to copy the sound, but most failed completely. This was because to get anywhere close you had to have an outstanding bassist and an outstanding drummer (and let's face it, over the last few years all we've tended to hear is a sodden beat) but not necessarily an outstanding lead guitarist. Combinations like that are very, very, rare.

Long live "The Ox!" I am now kicking myself for missing the last two times The Who came to Atlanta. I had been hoping to catch them on this current tour, but looks like The Who is now gone forever. It was easier to replace Keith Moon than it will be to replace John Entwistle. But if they plan to soldier on with a new bassist, hopefully it will be someone who is from a band that is likened to The Who. Hey does Paul Weller know bass? We are the Mods, we are the Mods, we are, we are, we are the Mods! Quadrophenia is a classic album (and my favorite one as well).

The Who's official site (access is via http://www.petetownshend.co.uk )says that the tour will continue. They have drafted in Pino Palladino as bassist. He is an excellent player, and has worked with Townshend and Daltrey before. Even so, short of contractual requirements, I can't see how this is a good idea.

A full statement is due to follow.

I'm gutted. Loved The Who.
OK, I was a bit of a 'Stalinist' Who fan, didn't really see them as the real thing after Moonie died, but they matured into a good act, not past the sell by date like many of their contemporaries.
So I now regret not seeing them in recent years, friends who did said how good they still were.
John was a great musician, a vital stabilising influence in the group (though maybe surprisingly his best friend in the group was Keith Moon apparently), and by all accounts an all round good bloke.
Sod the neighbours! I'm cranking up Live At Leeds, The Who Sell Out, Who's Next, Quadrophenia, The Kids Are Alright and my prized bootleg CD of the 1969 Woodstock performance.
A late night showing of The Kids Are Alright video, and their blistering set from the Stones 1968 film Rock N Roll Circus is also in order.
