If you've bought those at the iTunes Store they already are in h.264 (MPEG4). But these are all DRM-encoded and cannot be played back outside of iOS or Mac OS X. The movie and TV content providers don't allow sales without DRM.

This is the problem. Apple make this so people continue to use their products. They make things incompatible with other platforms. I really hate them Congrats on your GS3 purchase by the way. It is a fantastic device and seeing as your from canada i'm guessing you have the S4 version which is just as good as my Exynos one!

Nope. You're barking up the wrong tree there.
It was Apple who pushed for DRM-free online music sales against tough resistance of the music labels who for a long time insisted on it. All music tracks from the iTunes Store are in fact DRM free today.
Even at the start of the iTunes Music Store it was Apple who insisted again against the resistance of the music labels that any buyer would be able to burn DRM-free CD copies of all their tracks purchased from the Store. No other online store had such a lenient policy back then.
Movie studios and TV networks to this day will not agree to any sales of their content without DRM, regardless of physical or online. You'll find that all legal online sales of movies and TV shows suffer from the same kinds of restrictions.

Well, DRM is there to stop copies of media being redistributed beyond where you bought it.
Apple might be against DRM, yet it does not licence its format beyond Apple. So, you are free to copy your media to all your iOS devices and iTunes, yet not to other devices you might own. So, they are still using DRM to their advantage, by keeping content within their ecosystem.

There probably is a converter for this out there somewhere just like there is for converting videos to Iphone format. I have played "avi" files on a Galaxy ace as well as mp4 (non-encoded) files with fairly minimal issues and that phone is really outdated. I assume you can play both formats on GS3 and if not by default there are apps out there that will play multiple formats.
iOS may be very user friendly but for people who know tech and like to play around with advanced settings on software I really don't know why you wouldn't choose android which allows much more freedom for customization. I will acknowledge these are the same people who will jailbreak Iphones that I'm talking about.

Not true at all you have a Windows PC you can freely install both QT and iTunes (admitted iTunes often performs like a bag of **** on overly customised Windows !)
Whilst you need to buy via the iTunes store all MUSIC files Will play on ANY AAC compatible device. Just slide load via finder or explorer .
Myth 999999 AAC is Apple propriety - No in isn't its subject licensing from the same organisation as MP3 also not FREE. Apple,Nokia.LG,Sony and even Microsoft pay license fees to VIA to use this technology!
Want a free codec you could try OGG Vorbis.
As said by Klaus DRM or at least very restricted EULA agreements cover all forms of film distribution.
YOU CAN NOT legally strip DVDs to your PC/Mac hard drive and change formatting, nor can you easily convert any Blue Ray.
As for iTunes purchased and some (not all) DVDs there are ways to re encode (NOT legal) such as Handbreak on the Mac.
Comparison DRM coded Microsoft Media files can not be played on a Mac, Linux or generic MP3 player in fact there are two sub sets of Microsoft DRM that can't even be shared across players installed with certain MIcrosoft Media players !
Plays for Sure - (NOT) or Zoom (Failed) neither are cross compatable !
The other media service well you own and control NOTHING - Adobe Flash !
Known to not work on iOS and won't work on android beyond Ice Cream Sandwich (even here you may have to side load on some devices).
Now as for the device the Samsung S3 in it differing guises for differing markets well its functional .
Personally i find the S3 too wide in my small hands also find my 4S sharp and uncomfortably hard. Actually like the 3GS on ergonomic grounds
Android widgets are nice for a few seconds and then you forget about them - Just like on OSx and W7
iOS static look does save battery power and i do tend to use folders to reduce clutter and prioritise apps.
And yes i have invested in the Apple ecosystem for over a decade but that's me.
If i do look to move my phone at next upgrade in 2013 i will certainly look at the Windows phone8 products i think as phones/mobile media devices these have great potential to damage the Android march more so than iOS
I will NOT consider Andriod with its stealing ways and Google Adword under scoring.
