A monster storm is about to hit the Eastern Region of the United States. As with every major storm worldwide I am trying to keep myself updated with maps and news of how/where the storm is moving.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weathe...ates-sandys-catastrophic-im/746423

This one looks like a really powerful storm with unusual features and will cause/create a lot of disturbance and disruption.

http://www.crownweather.com/tropgraphics/al18wind.gif

I hope all of you on the Hurricane/storm path are preparing. Please try your best keeping yourselves safe and out of danger.

Please tell us how the storm is affecting your life with your stories and pictures if you can.

Well, currently I'm waiting it out at my apartment at school here in Wilmington, DE, so I'm smack dab in the middle of the projected path. I am under a mandatory evacuation so I could go home, but my home is under one as well and near the Atlantic so I'm probably safer here. I endured Irene last year and hurricanes and tropical storms for the last 23 so I'll know when it's time to pack up and head for higher ground. So far its looking mainly like a wind event. I'll provide updates and pictures if possible.

A site that you all might find interesting--I have occasionally looked at the Havaria RSOE/EDIS (Emergency Disaster Information Service), based out of Hungary - when some natural disaster occurs around the world. If you drill down, it will give you a lot of information - I used it when Hurricane Katrina and Ian hit my home area of the Texas Gulf Coast.

Main site is:

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/

North American Map:

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index2.php?area=usa&lang=eng

Click on the icons and you can drill down for details. RSOE/EDIS will give you a snapshot of what may be happening or about to happen in your area.

I hope that this helps.

That being said, it doesn't feel like a storm is coming...at least in my area, it doesn't feel like it.

Im on Long Island (Suffolk County) and right now it's just a bit breezy (wind NE at 23mph gusting to 38mph). I live about 6 miles from the water so I am not worried about flooding here (it has never flooded here in 30 years), I am more concerned about the strong winds. During Hurricane Irene last year we had lots of tree branches down and lost power for 3 days. I am expecting the same thing to happen with this storm, with maybe more tree damage.

I flew into JFK today and there were some bumps, but definitely not the worst I've experienced. I got smart a few days ago and changed my flight to an earlier time. Otherwise I would have been stuck elsewhere.

Travel Plans Thrown Into a Tailspin

Thousands of people were stranded Sunday as U.S. airlines canceled nearly 8,000 flights through Tuesday ahead of the two storm systems converging on the East Coast.

With Hurricane Sandy looming, airlines suspended operations at airports from Washington up to Boston. Carriers canceled 1,270 flights scheduled for Sunday, according to FlightAware.com, a flight-tracking website. As of Sunday night, airlines also canceled 5,900 flights scheduled for Monday and almost 800 flights Tuesday. FlightAware said it expects airlines to cancel more flights scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Many travelers will have to wait until Wednesday to fly.

There could be very serious damage to the USA's economy and in millions of people's lives, many billions in damage, 1000's of lost homes, major infrastructural damage in low-lying including buildings, subways in NYC, tunnels, airports, seaports and so on. Many coastal areas, especially barrier islands could quite literally be wiped out and many structures washed away, no longer habitable. Millions will not be able to go to work, so they will use lose income. Massive power outages could mean many areas badly affected for weeks with their own problems. The economic damage could badly hurt Christmas shopping. 1000's of excessive deaths could occur due to storm related stresse, inabiltiy for emergency services to get to ill people, injures from storm wind damage, some hospitals damaged from the storms.

Another potential problem could be the Presidential election next week as million of voters could see serious impediments in the ability to get to polls or polling places unable to be operated as their facilities damaged or power still out. That could have serious and unknown affects on the national elections

Not sure if that is possible. The election is in 8 days. The two problems with that could be some polling places without power and some areas still being flooded. It will be interesting to see if the storm surge is as high as they say it will be. I am most worried for the NYC metro area since many of those areas do not have beaches protecting property and homes. Also the subway lines could have a flooding problem. It is a little worrisome that there already needs to be rescues in Delaware. It is odd associating hurricanes with floods for someone from Miami who deals with hurricanes more often than anyone else but flooding is almost never a problem down here.

This storm is massive though. The wind field is like nothing I ever seen before and it got a little bit stronger over the night. Thankfully the winds are still not very strong so wind damage is not something we will have to worry about too much. Water is usually the biggest problem with hurricanes anyway though. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap...+shtml/092341.shtml?radii#contents

Also I know that the national hurricane center (NHC) is suppose to let local weather offices take care of these types of storms as it is no longer a "tropical hurricane" something like that but I think this was the wrong time to follow the "rules". The NHC is the best in the world at predictings these storms and setting up warnings etc.. They are still following it but not like they usually do and they are not setting up the normal warnings.

Public transit is shut down for the day, and my school has cancelled all events and classes--only people who are supposed to be at school are emergency personnel. According to the Washington Post's website, things aren't supposed to get really bad until later this afternoon and this evening.

Based upon what? People outside of the U.S. forget sometimes that we don't have "national" elections, per se. When I cast my vote for President, I'm actually voting for a local person to represent me in the Electoral College, who isn't even bound by law to cast their vote for the person they're nominated to vote for. Some local jurisdictions may extend voting, candidates may round up busses to bring voters to the polls, but the vote will happen on the first Tuesday in November as scheduled.

Someone in Congress would need to introduce a bill, it would need to pass both houses and then President Obama would need to sign it. All in the dwindling amount of time left before the election. Then, the entire country, except those state legislatures that immediately change their respective election days, would have to have 2 elections. One for the president and US representatives and another for senator (if applicable) and any local offices.

Quoting AeroWesty (Reply 17):
but the vote will happen on the first Tuesday in November as scheduled.

The first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

My brother in NJ (Clifton) is without power. My sister is in the mandatory evacuation zone (Rockaway) but won't leave. Called them both a little ago, but no answers. Wait and see.

My prayers go out to everyone affected by this storm.

Now, as for the severity of the storm: I'm no meteorologist, but I see a weak hurricane dancing up the Eastern Seaboard, with a weak Nor'Easter hanging around the north, effectively stalling Sandy over the Tri-State (and expanded) area. Factor in a cold front that pushed through our area yesterday that landed on the East Coast about the same time Sandy's outer bands landed and you have the makings of a nasty storm that's going to drop buckets of water.

Batten down the hatches, hunker down and, most important of all, stay safe.

Post Office was not delivering ("come rain or shine" my ass), but Chinese delivery guys of course still were. Didn't go into the office (in downtown Manhattan) today, although the official policy was unclear, but for tomorrow we have been told not to go unless we are in the "critical" list (we would be warned explicitly if we were).

Eqecat (one of the top catastrophe modeling firms) is predicting $5 to $10 billion of insurable damage (about twice that for the economic impact) but could go as high as $30 billion if it veers a few miles northwards to New York Harbor.

Now, time to hit the gym (got one in my building), No excuses not to today, unfortunately.

That should not happen in these winds. Crazy.

I have a friend who lives down by wall street but went up town he said he has seen cars float down the road.

This is somewhat like watching those discovery channel shows about the day a big hurricane hits NYC. Not as big as the discovery channel said it would be but pretty intense storm.

No, it's getting better. The water is receding (that which hasn't found its way underground, of course) as we head toward low tide. High tide will come again in the morning and there might be some flooding then, but at least there won't be the storm surge to go with it.

The high tide surge waters will be receding soon but the MTA won't be able to do a full assessment on any potential damage to transit infrastructure until tomorrow. Most colleges and schools will be closed tomorrow anyway.

Seems like it is getting better. Not sure how long rain and heavy wind will last. It will be rainy most of tomorrow too I am sure just do not know how much wind there will be. But tides are coming in. The next high tide wont have as much surge but as others are saying there will be no school tomorrow and probably the next day if not the rest of the week. It might take days to fix the transit and power systems. The storm is moving rather fast around 18mph.

Looks like there will be some wind for a bit longer http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap.../211847.shtml?radii?large#contents
with the worst winds around the Delaware-NJ border. It is no longer a "hurricane" too. It is a "superstorm" or a Post-Tropical Cyclone.

New Jersey, New York City, part of Long Island and lower NY State, SE Connecticut, South Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware all have been affected by what may be the worst storm since a Hurricane in 1903.
All bridges are still closed connecting NYC and Long Island, Staten Island and Brooklyn and NJ. The only tunnel that is open is the Lincoln - all other tunnels are closed due to flooding.
Mass transit is still shut down in the NYC region. There was major flooding of NYC's transit system, especially in tunnels and the subway system with no idea when it will be working.
All airports in the NYC Metro area are still closed with no real timetable for reopening.
Major flooding in parts of NY City, most critically in coastal areas, areas of Manhattan below 40th Street.
Major flooding in the low lying/riverfront areas of Hoboken, Jersey City. A levee broke on the Hackensack River in NJ, causing major flooding in Moonache, Little Ferry, part of Carlstdat, NJ.
A major hospital in NYC - NYU Medical Center had flooding and all backup generators fail.
Hospitals in Weehawken and Jersey City close to the Hudson River are shut down due to flooding.
Power is out for about 40% NJ Residents, especially in central and southern NJ.
There was massive damage to the NJ Shore area, probably the worst since 1962.
1000's of trees are down, one of my brothers had a tree fall on the roof of his house located in Sussex Co, NJ, the other's brother in law had a tree down on his house in West Milford, NJ., both with major roof partial structural damage.

I know this is not of major concern, with all of the damage out east, but I have been noticing issues with various internet services even here in central Indiana today. Youtube has off and on been throwing a 500 internal server error or a 404 service not available error. Internet traffic report shows that many routers are OOS and you can almost see the point where a lot went down as traffic decreased and packet loss jumped. Going to be a mess to clean up on many, many fronts.

I agree. The tip of the tail fin looks damaged with a dent in it.

I am thinking of Concorde G-BOAB sitting on the pier right down below the carrier. She must be in bad shape. The poor thing has no shelter. Her 'legs' and 'feet' are probably damaged by water. I hope she did not get water inside her.
I cannot find any pictures. The museum live cam has been down for hours. All they are showing is an out dated recorded picture of the carrier with the Enterprise "Dome" (which is in fact a tent) up and in place.

Why they placed such aviation/space icons in that place is beyond my understanding.

I finally escaped Chelsea (Lower Manhattan) and now have power and running water in Harlem. It took me a while to get from 23rd Street up to 130th Street. It took me about 4 hours via bus and walking. Two M11 busses drove right past me because they were full. Finally got on the M11 bus but got off after a while because a handicapped person needed to ride the bus (with his motor wheelchair) and several passengers volunteered to walk for a few more blocks. Then, got on a second M11 bus after walking a few blocks and finally got to 130th Street. It was quite an adventure!

My JetBlue flight to BUR tomorrow was cancelled but I was lucky enough to be rebooked to the earlier flight to LAX. I hope to do a post-Sandy trip report of JFK - LAX on B6. Also, wish me luck! It'll be an adventure getting to JFK from Harlem with limited mass transit!

Really? Of course he is venting. He hasn't had power for almost two weeks and had to live through a Nor'easter with no heat! Considering LIPA (among other power companies) are being investigated by a commission established by the NY governor, Dragon's vent was well warranted.

No, but it seems they did very little planning for a major outage (be it a hurricane or an ice storm or whatever) and in particular aren't good at explaining the whys and the hows of their approach to crisis management and the restoration of power.

One of my LI friends points out that the "99%" back online figure is a falsehood. The real stat is "99% of those homes able to accept power,” and there are entire TOWNS deemed unable to accept power, never mind homes.

So, it seems someone is putting the best possible PR spin on things.

I just found a press release from LIPA:

Quote:

As of 10:00 a.m. November 13, 2012:
99 percent of customers who are able to safely receive power are fully restored
Over 1.1 million outages restored to date
10,136 outages remain in Nassau (6,545) and Suffolk County (3,591)
Although LIPA power is available, up to 8,000 customers in Nassau and Suffolk and 27,000 in the Rockaways are unable to safely receive power without customer repairs

If I'm right:
- They say they've restored 1,100k customers above
- The total of unrestored is the 10k they say can accept power
plus the 8k+27k they say cannot accept power
- Thus they've restored 96% instead of the 99% they claim

The real issue is those "unable to accept power" will probably be in that condition for quite a while, thus cutting them out of the numbers means they can declare victory much sooner when the get those 10k online as opposed to the 45k that really aren't going to be online soon. Or in other terms the 99% will go to 100% shortly, versus stubbornly staying at 96% for a much longer time.

Now I know LIPA will work to get them all on-line, but again I'm just pointing out the PR spin.

One has to look at results. This is two weeks past the storm now, and there are still plenty of people who don't have power. If LIPA really is trying their damndest, then there are severe doubts as to their competence as a utility provider. We hear reports of crews roaming around with no assignments, technicians all ready to hook the power up but who can't get the final approval to do so from their managers, etc. Either way, they have problems that will definitely need to be addressed in the very near future.

I have a friend here in VA who welcomed their baby daughter six days before Sandy. They had a newborn at home without power for seven days after the storm. Dominion power gave him the usual run around and he was extremely frustrated. I guess he should have kept his mouth shut as well.

Absolutely LIPA is busting their butts trying to restore power, but what did they do to prep for the storm? I'm glad you know more than the NY Gov's office. If everything is all good, why is there an investigation and why did LIPA's COO resign?

I grew up in Florida with Hurricanes, went through a bad snowstorm and ice storm in North Carolina. 3-4 weeks is entirely reasonable time to wait for damage to the power system to be repaired. Most will have it sooner , but outlying areas, or severely damaged neighborhoods just will not get power back that soon. There is a lot of work and limited crews to do the work.

I just think it is funny how people complain after 2 weeks of a major storm that took out massive amounts of infrastructure, that somehow the crews who are working overtime are not doing their parts. . I understand they are upset, but it still takes time to repair badly damaged infrastructure.

Older than I just was ,and younger than I will soo be.

I am someone who at several times have been involved in repairs. I am tired of people with no knowledge complaining. How easy do you think it is to repair a damaged transformer station? It doesn't take much for two weeks to be an almost impossible feat.

I'm not saying LIPA did everything right, I don't know. I'm saying you should make sure to know before you make accusations. Certainly not call them monkeys.

I'm all for investigation what went wrong and what went right. It is also important to understand why those things that went wrong did so. Often it is because it is completely uneconomical, as in unacceptable costs by the customers, to have the needed redundancy to cover these situations.

Can't believe you actually think this way. Not only should he have kept his mouth shut, he should have taken his newborn and driven to a safe location. Probably before the storm.

You think that you can do large scale repair based on individuals needs? It is hard enough to prioritize essential services, e.g. hospitals.

Why confine yourself with facts?
