This year, in a surprise move, the Azerbaijan oil company SOCAR took over ESSO Switzerland (ESSO stands for Standard Oil = Exxon-Mobil), and to top it, went into an alliance with the largest retailer in Switzerland, MIGROS, whose franchisee organisation Migrolino takes over the petrol station shops. The first petrol station in the Zürich area got re-labelled at the end of September.

As a sheer coincidence, a government jet of Armenia was in Zürich these days for unknown reasons. Armavia had for a while served Zürich but then dropped out. So that in Switzerland, Azerbaijan is clearly ahead of Armenia. AND more important, ESSO Germany is for sale as well. Right at the moment it looks as if the Azerbaijanis had realized that realities in Switzerland are not as much banking-related as some people may believe. I cannot tell what will come out of all this, but what I really CAN tell is that there are interesting developments !
