Does anyone know of a decent location/website (other than Ebay) to purchase used Ipods? I'm looking for a 5th generation used and/or refurbished model. I would to like to avoid any fly by night outfits if possible. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Probably the best place to buy refurbs, however, they don't yet offer the 5th generation iPod Touch as the OP asked for.
But if you can wait a while longer, then Apple is definitely the best place to buy refurbs from. You get the standard 1 year warranty, there are many parts replaced (so they always look brand new), you can upgrade the warranty to 2 years (just as you can with brand new products), they are tested before being shipped (so you can almost guarantee that it will be in perfect condition) and of course they are cheaper!

Speaking of iPods.......I'm glad you reminded me.......but why does it have to be a 5th gen.? I haven't paid much attention to all of the newer iPods since I got mine.........an iPod Photo; (the thing must be 10 years old by now, not sure anyway, I have recently dug it out and started listening to it again; ( you can't tell it from a new one ); a few years back, I spent $300 for a set of Etymotic Research ear buds, and at the time, the things were really awesome; I listen mainly to classical music, and there is NOTHING out there that will produce the high frequencies that a solo violin is capable of, in order to evaluate how a set of earphones can handle a broad range of frequencies, especially at the high end. ( There are even a couple of pieces of music which are so difficult to play, that only a couple of violinists are able to play them properly.)
But I have another problem now; my hearing wasn't "the greatest" back when I bought the iPod, (around 10 yrs ago); but my ears are 10 years older now, and my hearing loss has progressed to a point now, that even with the high-end ER 3 ear buds, even they don't sound so great any more. Just a few weeks ago, I was in a Best Buy Store, and I picked up a set of Bose ear phones........( not the $300 "Quiet Comfort" noise canceling ones, but the $150 non-noise canceling ones , thinking to use them for being able to hear the TV; they work great for that, so I've been meaning to see how they "work" with the iPod, but hadn't gotten around to trying them yet. So..............I just now came home, turned on the computer, and I noticed this thread about iPods; I have just made a "world changing discovery"! I got the iPod out, unplugged the Bose phones from the computer, hooked them into the iPod, and I'm now hearing music with a sound quality I haven't heard in about 8 years now ! These Bose phones sound every bit as good as the ER 3's "used to" sound ! I have the iPod velcroed to a small battery powered "Air Head" head phone amp from "Headroom", but the batteries are out of the AirHead right now, so when I stick some AA cells in it, the sound quality will be even better. (Which reminds me.........)
I'll pass on something here that I learned about iPods before I bought this one; the circuitry in an iPod is capable of reproducing very good sound quality, except for one thing; in the never-ending quest for "smallness", there has never been enough room for a decent amp; reproducing very high quality sound requires a certain amount of power, (which requires a much bigger and better amp than ANY MP3 player has so If you want "great sound" out of any small device such as an iPod, you need a better amp; ( the guy who pointed all of this out to me is a PhD in EE ), and HE uses an amp that costs about 4 times what this one does; ( and I don't even remember what I paid for the thing any more, other than it was a lot less than the iPod) The place to find all of this stuff is a small company in Colarado, "Headroom".
BTW..........the idea of refurbs from Apple...........best advice you're goona get !
