I think 'Clockwork Angels' is their worst album to date. I thought Vaportrails would be tough to beat.
Snakes & Arrows was a small improvement because of the instrumentals.
I'm disappointed with the heavy for the sake of being heavy sound as well as the layers and layers of guitars, Geddy's layers of voice tracks and too many words. 'Clockwork Angels' has too many songs that sound the same. It's just a bunch of noise.
The last flawless album in my opinion is Hold Your Fire.

There is no song on that album unworthy of being turned up, should it come on over the radio. I think my favorites from that one are Prime Mover and Tai Shan, though, as I said, they're all good.
I think their best work would be that album, Power Windows, Presto, & Roll the Bones. Though I can see the argument being made that 'Bones was probably the beginning of the end for their awesomeness, even if Counterparts was still a good album too.
Power Windows I think would be hard to equal again. Even songs like Middletown Dreams, which come off as somewhat mundane on the first listen, really grow on you after a while.
I really wish they would come out with more work from that "synth" era, as that is what they do best.

That was that album that pulled me in. That album is like magic.

I love the orchestra on Middletown Dreams and it's a shame Rush didn't use their string section to play those parts on their current tour.
I consider Presto to be the beginning of the end although Test For Echo was decent.
As far as this 'raw' sound goes, I prefer the first album, Fly By Night and Caress Of Steel.
THAT is raw, not the muddied mess they've been putting out over the last 10 years.

I wish they had went more with a Ozric Tentacles or Dream Theater style instead of this grunge sound which they don't do very well.
Neil Peart needs to put down his ink pen and stop writing so many lyrics. I know he has a lot on his mind but it doesn't mean Geddy has to sing everything that comes to his mind. The newer songs are too wordy.

And I think that's a good barometer of what's just a good band/album vs the kind of thing you'll probably listen to over and over again for life. Rush obviously has a lot of that going on.
I feel that way about a lot of my personal favorites (I can listen to Type O Negative's Life is Killing Me or October Rust and find new ways to enjoy those on a near weekly basis.)

You know, it's really interesting you mention this. I've been a Dream Theater fan since about Images and Words. Much like Rush, they're really great about their lyrical content staying away from the "Boy meets girl"/"Boy cheats on girl and hears about for all eternity"/"Boy and Girl are insecure as all hell about each other and want the whole freakin world to know about it" schtick that a lot of otherwise great bands waste their existence on.
I can probably listen to Pull Me Under three times a day, though I actually think that Metropolis Pt 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper is quite possible one of the best "sleeper" songs ever. As awesome as that one is, I'm always surprised it's not a hell of a lot more well known than it is.
I'm also impressed with the fact that DT regularly plays three and four hour sets when they go on tour these days. Maybe you were at the show they did in Bangkok not so long ago where they played the opening bit from Rush's Passage to Bangkok. I'll bet that would have been neat to see...
Anyway, yes, that would have been a much, much better direction for Rush to take, if they really wanted a more "edgy" rock sound. I very much doubt any of their fans would have been displeased to see that direction taken. I think we all know they could have done it well. Oh well, perhaps on their next evolutionary shift...
PHX787, if you're reading this thread, and aren't already familiar with Dream Theater, I would advise getting acquainted. Japan is all about the DT.
Ok, I don't know how I missed that one! A quick youtube tour has convinced me give this one a thorough listen through. That baseline/keyboard from Spacebase is making me wish I could smoke things that would imperil my career, lol...

They're a good band but that thick New York accent ruins it for me.

Yes indeed. Many Rush fans like those bands as well. Seeing that they've been touring South America recently, it would be neat if they'd incorporated some Brazilian sounds in to their music. Brazil has a rich music heritage as well.
Back in early 2001, Sting had incorporated Arabic sounds to his music as well as Carlos Santana with Cheb Khaled and I was hoping that style of music would catch on in the West. I think 9/11 put the kabosh on that trend.
Probably not going to happen. Neil Peart is already 60 and Geddy & Alex will hit 60 next year.
Their tours are getting shorter and I think they're just getting tired.

It's certainly a "love it or hate it" thing, yes. I actually think it takes a lot of the pretentiousness away that a lot of Symphonic Heavy Metal acts carry around. Plus, it made them that much better live, I always thought.
In that respect, they actually give me the same feeling that say Beasty Boys are good for. A lot of talent, without the "we're so full of ourselves" bit.

Here is a Canadian artist that went prog-rock for a period of time in the 1970s, even though he is known for his adult contemporary hits.

I might have said that wrong. I've been to a lot of TON's shows & they really do come off as a good bit more laid back and not very contrived, which is hard to do in that genre. Plus, they were always real big on gags and wordplay, both in studio and on stage.

I knew what you meant the first time. I would say prog bands tend to be very cerebral. My idea of pretentious would be U2 and REM.

You're not missing much. The songs on the new album have great intos but plunge in to a muddy mess of noise.
Snake & Arrows album (2007) had two good instruments.
