Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck has passed away in Norwalk, CT.He was one day short of is 92nd birth. Brubeck was best remembered for his 'Take Five' with the Dave BrubecK Quartet.
May he RIP.

I have listened to his music a lot.
He is now up in Jazz Musicians Heaven to rejoin other greats... Charlie Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Gillespie, Art Blakey, Billie Holiday, Basie, Coltrane, Chet Baker, Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis...

I went to his concert here in '62 with a friend. We were waling behind the Old Brady (a long standing venue here) and say a guy fighting with getting a drum kit out of a station wagon. He accepted our offer of help so we got in via the stage door. The "guy" turned out to be Ray Brown, the bass player.
Joe Morello was the drummer and was exceptionally kind to everyone - including some kids who asked if it was true that he practiced when reading the paper in the morning. He actually broke a head on a tom-tom during his solo - played with the tear for a few minutes as part of the solo.
Paul Desmond was on alto sax and took us under his wings before the show, talking about reeds (he had a case full of reed boxes. LaMaz (sp?) was the best brand in those days and he would have had over a hundred in his case.
Brubeck was also very kind to the kids (or all ages) on stage, talking to us until they started opening the curtain. We had to run off stage, something everyone in the band thought was pretty funny.
Overall all four guys in that band were nice guys, especially to the kids (and us) who were on stage talking to them.
Nice guys in a very good band. Lots of talent and some pretty good music.

While I am primarily into smooth jazz, Sirius XM's Watercolors actually plays Take Five quite frequently. That is one of few traditional jazz songs that can actually appeal to smooth jazz listeners.

Glad to hear that they were nice guys. That isn't always the case. Some in the music business (like all of life) are total tools. Two I have personal knowledge of are Steve Howe of Yes and Van Morrison.
