Watched a trailer for One Shot, the first Jack Reacher film, I'm staggered that the producers of this film and the author of the books Lee Child had the audacity to cast and approve that tiny midget Tom Cruise for the role of a man who is a 6'5 250 pound mountain of muscle, gotta be one of the biggest novel to film miscasts that I can think of. The books always talk about Reachers size, strength and physical presence, Tom has neither, size, strength or physical presence. It's gonna be hard for me to buy another Reacher novel after this, the Reacher in my mind has now been replaced by a couch jumping midget.

I guess if one doesn't know who Jack Reacher is (raises hand here) then it might not make a big difference.
I still think a lot of people may mock Cruise for his past antics, but find he still is capable of makimg good action type films. He has a very long history in films and people have not forgotten that.
I like him. But the public will decide if this film does well or not and if he can carry off "Jack Reacher". (Gotta research this Jack Reacher guy)...

Quoting RobertNL070 (Reply 6): Lee Child's books are very popular here and I have read a couple. I wonder how Tom Cruise will portray Jack Reacher. On stilts?
The reviews of advance screenings I've read so far have been pretty blunt, his portrayal, it's a joke, especially when he takes his shirt off, people laughed.

I've never seen a film about a book I like where I thought the casting of the characters was right. Well, maybe Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch was close to right.
Never read a Reacher novel, don't really have any interest to do so.
When a book has to be boiled down to less than 100 pages to be turned into a movie - very much is always lost.
Now I prefer to read the book after seeing the movie so that the book can fill out the characters and story.
Your reaction is pretty much what the producers expected.
The truth is that there are a lot more Tom Cruise fans who will be happy with his portrayal than Jack Reacher fans who will be unhappy.

sounds kind of childish (people laughing). He's 50+ years old. Still looks pretty damned good IMO. I've seen him recently shirtless (in pics).

Yep. The one that always sticks with me is Sam Neill playing Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, even though I like both the movie and the book. You just can't generally judge movies by the books they are based on; too much has to change, in terms of story, characters, etc...

And that's really all that matters to the production company.

I remember when I first saw Gone with the Wind. My first thought was, "uh, where are the other 700 pages?" Still a good movie, though.
"Two and a Half Men" was filmed in front of a live ostrich.

I must say I think it's the worst piece of casting in history
As I understand it, Cruise is the owner of the film right's I guess that he has decided to cast himself in the role, which is IMO a bit pathetic in itself
Must think up a new one soon, slow moving brain trying to get into gear ;)

Elevator shoes?
I have actually read some books where I though Tom Cruise (or someone similar) would be very good for the part. Jack Reacher isn't one. Maybe Ken McCoy in WEB Griffins series on the Marine Corps. Or even Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp.
Actually I have long thought these types of characters would be great for up & coming actors - like Sean Connery in the original James Bond movies.
He has the Church of Scientology and maybe Cruise as Reacher can bring more sheep into the fold. Also with Mr. Cruise probably being a very in the closet Gay man this will promote and sell the "Jack Reacher Brand."

Rob;
I'm completely un-familiar with Lee Child, or his "character", Jack Reacher; however, I agree with you completely on your post, which only one small "addition"................

Many times the novelist/author has little if any say on who plays the roles of the main characters.
This goes way back but, in the Ed Mc.Bain iconic 87th. Precinct mysteries the character Meyer Meyer was totally bald.
In the short lived one season TV show on NBC back in 1962 Norman Fell played Meyer Meyer. You know the late Mr. Roper!

Now that I've read the rest of the replies.............(and this is just my opinion........)
First of all, if I have zero respect for someone, if I just plain dislike them, if i think they are a "schmuck", (and given my very slight interest in movies in general), the chances that I would ever go see them in a movie is somewhere between "aint never gonna happen", and "are you kidding me?"
Tom Cruise "qualifies" on all three of the above. (IMO)
I couldn't possibly care less how many movies TC has made, how "successful" or "unsuccessful" any of them were, how many TC "fanboys" went to see any of them, at he end of the day, Tom Cruise is STILL a diminutive little "jerk", "jack-ass", "moron", and yes, a down-right "schmuck" whose only interest in life is......Tom Cruise. ( So you will never need to worry about running into me in theater showing a Tom Cruise flick.)
( And I might add, all of the above is even before the subject of "Scientology" is brought up.)

Heck, I'd cast old Rudy from the first season of Survivor as Jack Reacher or Dennis Quaid. Casting Tomcat is almost as tacky as casting Richard Hatch as Jack REacher! Or Ben Aflac!

If the movie prompts more people to buy and read the books it will make the casting of the midget appear even more daft once the great unwashed will realise the kinda guy Reacher is supposed to be, which is the opposite of the kinda guy the midget is.

I have read all the books, and little Tom as the lead will make me stay away . Beside the fact that I find him a useless actor IMHO , never watched a movie with him in it I have liked . So I will wait for the next book thanks

You took the words out of my mouth....exactly my stance as well. I won't toss a red cent to Cruise's way or really toward many in Hollywood, especailly a cultist like him.

Or the same guy playing Vasily Borodin in Hunt for Red October. That totally should have been someone more like Sam Waterston. Come to think of it, casting Sean Connery as Marko Ramius could have been better too. The book paints someone a lot more like Harry Dean Stanton in look and demeanor.

Sometimes if the actors are cast to match the book description - people still complain.
Such as the folks upset about Rue being played by a black girl in the Hunger Games movie where the book clearly says the character has very dark skin and tight curly hair.
