Nobody seems to care, but today it's 25 years since this tragedy.

And nothing seems to be changed, 25 years later I went on Supercat 30 (Ok HSC ST. JHUDIEL who like their new names...) in weather no high speed ferry would have left the port in other parts of the world.

Thats an incredible death toll but you know that what happens in the third world stays in the third world.

Sad but true yes.

I think the overloading issues are mostly gone but other operational issues are not. You don't send a catamaran into a full blown storm and then announce as a hero we're 12 mins early...

I live in the Nordics and they keep mourning the 800 that went down with the Estonia. Not a word of this tragedy at all, even though PA103 appears in the news some days... Sickening, a life is a life no matter where.

I have to say that I don´t feel comfortable on Filipino island ferries. Two years ago we went to Camiquin Island (coming from Iligan City). The ferry to go to the island was ok (I think it was a converted Landing Craft Tank), but the ferry we took on the way back was scary. It had served in a previous life as a Japanese inter island ferry and was thoroughly corroded in main structural components. The original self inflating life rafts had been removed (you could still see where they were mounted) and those were replaced with very primitive rafts). I was happy that it was only thre to four miles and that the sea was flat. I wouldn´t want to to use this ferry in a storm. Lots of jury rigged equipment as well.
