Celebrity Product Endorsements, What Do You Think?

Are you more likely to buy a product that's endorsed by your favorite celebrity? We know celebrities don't endorse anything for free or simply because they like the product, in almost all endorsement deals the only reason is the big payout.

So what do you think? Since we're in the midst of the busiest shopping time of the year I thought it's a good time to ask.

Nope - if anything I am discouraged by it. You can pay them to promote the product, but I can't think of a single celebrity who would influence me to buy anything.

Ads generally discourage me because of the lack of realism. For example: who drives at that speed on an LA freeway? You can't - too much traffic. Now show me a car that never goes more than 35 mph in city driving and I might consider it.

More likely to buy it? No. More likely to pay attention to a recognizable face or look up when I hear a familiar voice? Sure, in fact it drives me nuts when I cannot place a commercial voiceover voice. Who wants to watch cars being driven in a normal way? That's boring as hell, just look at Motorweek. There don't seem to be many celebrity endorsed cars. Buick had Tiger Woods and now Shaq and Peyton Manning (his commercial is actually quite clever) and Fiat used Charlie Sheen, but that's the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

There are probably some celebrity endorsements that I don't even realize are celebrities. And of course there is also the practice of people who are celebrities here doing ads for other countries, which I've seen called Japandering.

I doubt very few people will freely admit that they are influenced to buy a product based on a celebrity endorsement, however the marketing industry knows quite well that what you say and what you do are polar opposites. It is not so you think 'I like that guy and he likes that product so I'll buy it'. It's a case of whenever you see that person you will subconsciously think of the product. Its not about you wanting to buy it, its about keeping their product in your mind for when you want to buy something like it. They practically get free advertising every time you see that person, even when they're not expressly advertising that product, which is exactly why they're so willing to shell out ridiculous bucks for them.

Quick, what the first thing you think about when you see George Clooney on tv. Me? It's American Airlines and Nespresso coffee. They've just doubled their value from the advertising just because my brain has all on its own made that connection. Those brands are both in your head and next time you're looking for coffee you'll see Nespresso, your brain will say 'I've heard that before, lets buy it' without expressly conjuring up George Clooney and you'd be the same person who just told me they're not influenced by celebrity endorsements.

Asking whether we like it though is perfectly reasonable, I certainly don't. But I don't feel like moving into the middle of nowhere to escape it. Modern day mind control!

Very few ads will actually drive you to consciously buy the product, but that is not what advertising is about.

For the most part, no.
The only two things I ever was influenced to buy is a Rickenbaker 4001 bass and Gibson ES-335 guitar.
Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush played those over the years. I happen to like the sound of those guitars as well. There are plenty others that they have played over the years that I do not like as well.


Not sure how many people bought the Pontiac Fiero because of the Hall & Oates endorsement.

Blake Griffin of the LA Clippers is a big supporter of Kia. His ads are always on TNT and ESPN during basketball season,

When I see a celeb endorsing something on television I just think "Another pretty face being paid to represent a product".

   High quality at a reasonable price, that's what really matters to us regular folks, which is not always the case with celebs.

Why?! Simply because a manufacturer can afford to pay big bucks for celebrity endorsements doesn't mean their product offers the best value!

I think if you have a new product in the market a famous face can help create the product/brand awareness.

Most of the time I don't care, since it is paid for anyway. But when someone knowledgeable is able to speak freely that might be different. For instance, the blokes at Top Gear are well known for speaking the truth if something is crap. But James May has nothing but praise for his Fiat Panda. That influences more then Michael Schumacher getting paid to drive a Fiat Croma or Jennifer Lopez getting paid to drive a Fiat 500.

Yes I definitely get influenced by it. Some stuff I just find interesting like Tag Heur (sp?) watches and stuff (Jenson Button? Lewis Hamilton? Tiger Woods etc.) although I would never buy a watch for that much I don't think.

Also movie product placement. Watching a recent Adam Sandler movie made me want to go back to Pizza Hut and drink Pepsi. It really did! And lots of Sony VAIO's I thought were cool in the movie 2012. I really don't mind as long as it fits in the movie in my mind or something and I like the movie.

Although voiceovers in ads are important a good or funny ad will definitely make me interested in something.

Speaking of players doing stuff abroad I think the NBA star Kobe Bryant did an ad or some ads for Turkish airlines and I think I even saw Kevin Costner on some posters (although maybe it was someone who looked like Kevin Costner more likely).

And regarding musical instruments I definitely agree. Being someone into film music I have often wanted a Korg Wavestaion synth so I could make music like Vangelis in the movie 1492 or a Fairlight so I can make music like Jan Hammer in Miami Vice or Hans Zimmer in Rain Man. As time has passed I have come to believe it is like a mirage and this never happens but I think lots of people who like messing around with music stuff by things which were used to make records they like or concerts they have seen etc. Same with movies and stuff too probably, maybe even painters and pottery makers and even people who do knitting!

Probably because I think that a vast percentage of the celebs are beneath even me when it comes to a variety of points of views, let alone have a personal honesty quotient when reviewing a product without financial persuasion.

In the case of professionals (some mentioned musicians) I can really see how that kind of endorsement could influence. After all, these guys and girls know their art and I (personally) doubt they would shade their reputations by endorsing a dork instrument for some cash (they probably have more cash than they can use, anyway), but when a golfer like Tiger Woods endorses Buick for untold sums I don't care. Furthermore, I'm privy to the fact that Tiger likes Cadillacs (or at least did when I was at GM.

If an ad has ever encouraged me to purchase a product it's because the product was new or exciting or solved a problem in a way I was interested, not by the spokesperson. The mega ad agencies prove me wrong all the time, but that's my thinking. regards...jack
