Ok, I am officially frustrated and giving up for he night. But I will have the same problem in the am.

Last night when I parked my truck in the driveway it was running fine. It is a 2004 Ford Heritage with the 4.2 liter six cylinder. It has 178k miles on it do far.

Today it wouldn't start.

It is cold-soaked (-15f) so I plugged in the oil heater and hooked it up to my battery charger. It still wouldn't start. The engine is spinning freely

I didn't see any bad fuses.

I am thinking that I may have some ice in the fuel line somewhere, I did put a can of heat antifreeze in the gas tank today. I usually fill it once a week sonit isnt old gas. I still have a 1/4 of a tank left maybe the heat will help if it sits in it overnight. if I have diesel fuel for my torpedo heater tommorrow I will run it pointing under the truck and see if it is ice in the fuel line I can thaw it.

Do any of you backyard mechanics have any other ideas on what I should work with if I bomb out for a second day in a row?

Thanks in advance

I'm thinking a frozen fuel line is somewhat unlikely given the higher usage and regular fill ups on your car.

Your problem sounds electronic....do you have an aftermarket remote start? Could your security key be bad, have you tried the spare key? Give us a bit more info if you can, and good luck.

Well others have had the same problems:

This one seems like it might apply directly though the engine is 4.0 not 4.2:

[We ended up bringing it to the Ford dealer. They put it on a diagnostic test and everything checked out fine. They did however mention there is a TSB that addresses this. It is TSB 5-10-16, dated 05/30/05, titled NO START/HARD START ON COLD SOAK - 40L ENGINE 2004-2005. It basically states to: Reprogram the power train control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using WDS release B37.5 or higher. This was done by the dealer and since that time, we have had no issues. I want to put this out there for others as I had done a search back in March on this site but did not find much help other than information about the fuel pump

On a side note, I was informed by the dealership that as per the owner service manual, you can apply some accelerator to aid in a hard start as long as it is during the cranking process. He pointed it out to me in the Owner’s Manual. I was not aware of this. Anyways, hopefully this will help others out.

Good luck! (and Merry Christmas  )

It's running again!

I don't know if it was because it warmed up to -9f today but I swapped the two relays for the fuel system with ones out of a Ranger my brother has as a parts truck. He also confirmed I had fuel in the fuel rail. Went to crank it, it sounded like it wanted to start, cracked it again it sounded like it wanted to start, third time was the charm.......I'm going to have to check to see if those relays are actually bad....but is running now.

Thank for all the advice
