I suspect that the release was to meet legal and financial (in particular tax) reasons, especially under the notorious 'Hollywood accounting' rules. I also wonder if was a scam by the producers - think of the story line of the original Mel Brooks movie 'The Producers'. It is a shame Mr. Slater was involved in this, wasting his time. But it isn't only this film that bombed this past year, perhaps much worse was Disney's 'Jack Carter' which by absolute dollar numbers, may be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time with a loss of $160 Million or worse.
