After a long (20-year) hiatus, I have been thinking of getting back into R/C hobbying. I used to own several gasoline and electric powered R/C cars, aircraft, and one helicopter. I gave them away when I no longer had time to fool with the stuff, but now I do miss it.

Now, I am researching options for Radio Controlled/Infrared Controlled 'copters, cars and small aircraft on the 'net, and wow, how things have changed.

If you fellow A.netters have any interest in this sort of stuff, and have some ideas, new product information, recommendations for your favorite web sites, then please post the information in this thread.

One piece of input....Stay away from helicopters, I don't know what the deal is but I've seen more money wasted in R/C helicopters than I've seen flying ones.

Having said that, one thing that has changed, you can now buy one radio system, this is called bind and fly/drive. I have a JR DX6i, and I can fly everything with one radio. I fly foam airplanes, and we can have a massive mid-air collision and the consequence is usually less than $50 worth.

One big difference between now and then is battery and motor technology. Lithium ion and brushless motors are super powerful, world apart from the old batteries and motors from 20 years ago. Back then it was all about stinky gas engines if you wanted power - now there are great planes that are electric (which are also very quiet, clean and hassle free). I can get at least 10 mins of flight out of the Supercub and my electric Alpha 40 trainer - more than enough.

As a kid I only had toy cars and a boat. Later I got interested in R/C planes and went to a few fields with a couple of friends. Seeing a crash pretty much each time (and several at exhibitions) meant that I was really turned off.

When I was dropping my wife off at the airport in Indianapolis, I noticed a sign by the road near Plainfield that said "Air Show Today"; thinking it was probably a small airport, I followed the signs, turned out it's a RC flying club; I spent the whole afternoon watching guys flying their models; one guy had a fabulous looking plane, looked like it was damned near big enough to ride in......thing was like 6 or 7 feet long! Another guy told me he had a few K in it; it was almost like watching a real plane it flew so well.

Another guy had an electric-powered F-22 Raptor; (it was foam, and looked VERY realistic); I was really kicking g myself because I didn't have my camera with me. A couple of times there were 4 planes in the air at the same time; a guy told me that 5 planes up at a time is the club limit.

I was very impressed by some of the guys with the models; the guy that had the great big model was a former racing pilot; you could tell just watching him fly that big model he was a real "been there, did that" guy; VERY cool !

Their "airport" was very impressive also; had three or four "taxi strips" out to the main runway......some had 2 or 3 ninety degree turns out to the "runway"........very realistic; there was wide open agricultural land on three sides of the field, and a big prison behind it; a guy told me, the biggest "no no", was flying over the prison ! He said if a model went down inside the "razor wire" fences, it was "gone for good" !

The place was on the west side of Plainfield, Indiana, maybe 6 or 8 miles due west of Indianapolis International Airport. (IND).

As already mentioned, the really BIG advancement in RC models is the Li-ion batteries and the new radios.

I was especially impressed by the performance of the model "Jets"; the little electric fans that furnish the thrust to power them are absolutely amazing! When the guy flying the F-22 was "on final" to land, it was almost like looking at a real Raptor coming in to land. Another thing that really surprised me; unlike years past, almost all of the models these guys are flying are "right out of the box", maybe a few decals added, rather than hundreds of hours of building from scratch.

I have a friend in Austria (Graz) who sends me a video on DVD each year of their annual R/C airshow. Some of those planes are just amazing. Jet turbine engines on them. The models themselves are huge! I have never seen any that large here in the U.S..
